For PS4 gaming, prioritize a TV with a responsive Game Mode and compare independent input-lag measurements for the exact model. A 120 Hz TV is not a PS4 requirement. If you want HDR, check for HDR10 support on the TV’s specific HDMI input and configure the console and TV correctly.

What matters most in a TV for PS4 gaming?

Start with the display’s contribution to responsiveness: input lag, or the delay before the TV shows an image from the console. This is separate from controller, network, and game-engine delays. Then check the TV’s native refresh capability and the HDMI input’s HDR support if you want HDR gaming.

  • Game Mode: Sony recommends its TV’s Game setting to reduce input lag. The recommendation does not specify a universal millisecond target; check measurements for the exact TV model if responsiveness is a priority. Sony’s Game-setting guidance.
  • Refresh rate: A 60 Hz-class TV is a sensible baseline for PS4 shopping. A higher advertised rate does not by itself prove the PS4 can use it or that a particular game will benefit. LG’s gaming TV guide discusses higher-refresh features generally, not as a PS4 requirement.
  • HDR: PS4 supports HDR output, but the TV must support HDR10 and the input used must be HDR-capable. HDR is optional; you can still play games on an SDR TV. PlayStation’s HDR requirements and setup.

How do I reduce input lag on a TV?

  1. Enable Game Mode or the manufacturer’s equivalent for the HDMI input connected to the PS4. Sony says its Game setting reduces input lag, while supported Samsung TVs may detect a PS4 and switch to Game Mode automatically; behavior depends on the model. Samsung’s Game Mode guidance.
  2. Check the TV’s picture settings while a game is running. Make sure Game Mode remains active on the PS4’s input rather than assuming an automatic switch occurred.
  3. If choosing between TVs, compare independent, model-specific input-lag measurements in Game Mode at the resolution and refresh rate you will use. The cited manufacturer support pages do not provide a cross-brand latency comparison or a universal target.

Picture-processing options and menu names differ by model. Do not infer a precise latency reduction from a mode label alone.

Does PS4 need a 120 Hz TV?

No. A 120 Hz set is not established as a requirement for ordinary PS4 gaming. Treat 120 Hz, VRR, and similar specifications as features to evaluate for other devices or a future console, not as proof of a PS4 advantage. Confirm the output modes available from your console and the settings of the games you play; supported modes can vary by setup and game.

HDR technology With an HDR TV, compatible PS4 games display an unbelievably vibrant and lifelike range of colors.

When comparing TVs, distinguish the panel’s native refresh rate and the HDMI input modes it supports from brand-specific “motion rate” labels. A marketing label alone does not show that a console can send that signal or that the panel will improve responsiveness.

Does PS4 support HDR, and what do you need?

Yes. PlayStation states that PS4 consoles support HDR video output for games and streaming. Its listed requirements include an HDR10-compatible 2K or 4K HDR TV, a Premium HDMI cable, HDR-enabled content, and PS4 system software version 7.0 or later. These are compatibility requirements, not a guarantee of a particular TV’s HDR brightness, contrast, or picture quality.

Check which HDMI input on your TV supports HDR; a TV’s general HDR label does not establish that every input supports it. PlayStation’s setup directions call for connecting the PS4 directly to the TV, so an intervening receiver or HDMI switch may not follow the specified setup path.

How to set up HDR on PS4

  1. Find the TV’s HDMI input that supports HDR and enable the input’s HDR setting. Depending on the TV, the option may have a name such as “HDMI Enhanced Mode” or “UHD Color Mode.”
  2. Connect the PS4 directly to that input with a Premium HDMI cable.
  3. On the PS4, open Settings > Sound and Screen > Video Output Settings. Set HDR and Deep Color Output to Automatic.
  4. Use a game or streaming content that supports HDR. The PS4’s Video Output Information screen can show whether HDR is supported; Adjust HDR provides calibration instructions.

How to compare two TVs for PS4

What to compare What to verify
Input lag Independent measurements for the exact model in Game Mode at the PS4 output mode you plan to use. The Sony support guidance recommends Game setting but does not state a target figure.
Refresh capability Native panel refresh rate and supported HDMI modes, rather than a motion-rate marketing label. A 120 Hz specification is not itself evidence of a PS4 requirement.
HDR HDR10 support and which particular HDMI input accepts HDR; also confirm the TV has a setting to enable HDR for that port.
Setup Game Mode access for the PS4 input, direct HDR connection, and a suitable cable for the signal you intend to use.
Other devices Whether higher refresh or VRR matters for a separate source. Assess those features independently of the PS4 purchase.

The cited sources do not provide current model-by-model input-lag tests or comparative HDR measurements, so they cannot establish a best-TV ranking. Use them to verify features and setup, then consult independent tests for the exact models you are considering.
