Before switching to Visible, check three things on the exact phone you plan to use: whether it supports eSIM, whether Visible approves its IMEI, and whether it is unlocked. Then prepare the phone and Wi-Fi before starting activation. If you want to keep your number, treat porting as a separate step and leave your old service active until the transfer finishes.
Check the phone before you switch
eSIM support and Visible compatibility are separate questions. A phone may offer eSIM settings without being approved for Visible service. Visible recommends checking the exact device’s IMEI rather than relying on its model name or an eSIM menu. Its BYOD guidance puts it plainly: “Always check your IMEI in the compatibility checker to be 100% sure your phone is BYOD compatible.”
1. See whether the phone has eSIM capability
Look in the phone’s settings for eSIM or SIM-management options. Visible lists these navigation paths:
- iPhone: Settings > Cellular.
- Samsung: Settings > Connections > SIM card manager.
- Google: Settings > Network & Internet > eSIM Cards.
Android menu names can differ by model and software version, so these paths are clues, not proof of compatibility. See Visible’s eSIM guidance for iPhone and Android.

2. Check the exact IMEI with Visible
Use Visible’s Compatibility Checker and enter the IMEI of the phone you intend to activate. Visible describes an IMEI as a 15-digit identifier; you can usually display it by dialing *#06#. Some phones have more than one IMEI, so use the identifier requested by the checker. Instructions are in Visible’s IMEI help page.
3. Confirm the phone is unlocked
A phone bought from another carrier needs to be unlocked for BYOD use on Visible. A device still being paid off may remain carrier-locked. Ask your current carrier whether the phone is unlocked or eligible to be unlocked; Visible notes that hardware and software can also affect compatibility. If the checker does not approve the device, resolve any carrier lock or eligibility issue, or use another compatible phone.

Prepare before activating eSIM
Visible’s activation guidance recommends getting the phone and connection ready before opening the setup flow:
- Install the current Visible app and update the phone’s software.
- Charge the battery and connect to Wi-Fi.
- Be in a Visible coverage area.
- Back up the phone before transferring service to a different device.
App screens vary between iPhone and Android. Use the current Visible eSIM instructions for the phone you are activating.

Activate eSIM in the Visible app
- Sign in to the Visible app on the phone that will receive service.
- Choose whether you are installing the eSIM on your current phone or a new phone.
- Enter the complete IMEI and complete the app’s checklist.
- Verify your account, then follow the prompts to download and install the eSIM.
- Finish the phone’s setup prompts. On iPhone, follow the cellular plan and default-line choices. On Android, make sure the Visible eSIM is enabled and mobile data is on.
Visible says eSIM activation or transfer often takes up to 15 minutes, though it can take longer. If the app-based process fails, follow Visible’s on-screen recovery instructions; some cases offer activation by QR code. Visible also describes an alternate manual-code route for Android users who cannot show the QR code on a second device. After setup, test calls, messages, and mobile data. The device-specific instructions have the relevant recovery steps.
Choose eSIM or a physical SIM
Use these checks to decide which SIM route fits your situation. Visible’s instructions cover both eSIM and physical SIM (pSIM), but do not establish that choosing one changes the network service itself.

Neither SIM type makes an incompatible or locked phone eligible. Check Visible’s BYOD guidance and Compatibility Checker before deciding.

Porting a number is separate from downloading an eSIM. Visible lets you request a number transfer during account creation or after activating with a new number. Before submitting a port request, use Visible’s number-transfer guidance and gather the details your previous carrier requires.

- Check that your number is eligible to transfer.
- Keep the old carrier’s service active until the transfer completes; do not cancel it manually first.
- Have your phone number, carrier account number, port-out or transfer PIN, and service ZIP code ready. Requirements vary by carrier.
Visible says a port request can take from one hour to ten days depending on the previous carrier. That is Visible’s stated estimate, not a measured average. Track progress with Visible’s Port Tracker or wait for its completion notification. Visible says the previous account is terminated when the number transfer completes; then verify that your Visible service works.
If the phone does not pass the checks
Do not buy a replacement based on eSIM support alone. First ask the current carrier about unlocking the phone and check the exact IMEI again. If Visible still does not approve it, use a compatible device or consider another phone. If shopping, look for an unlocked smartphone and verify its exact model or IMEI with Visible before buying; compatibility can vary within a phone family.
