Buy a Steam Early Access game only if the version available now looks worth its price to you. Early Access is a way to play a game while it is still being developed—not a promise that every planned feature will arrive or that the game will be finished on a particular date.
Judge the game that exists today
Steam’s guidance is to consider what a game is like to play right now, rather than buying solely for its future ambitions. Look at the current screenshots and trailer, then read the store listing and recent player information. If the present build does not appeal to you, Steam suggests waiting for an update or full release.

Ask yourself whether you would enjoy the game if development stopped in its current state. Consider whether its current gameplay, features, and price make sense for you, and whether you are comfortable with bugs, missing content, or changes as development continues.
Read the developer’s Early Access plan
Developers complete an Early Access questionnaire before release. Its answers appear in the blue Early Access section below the screenshots on the store page. Read what the developer says about the game’s current state, intended development, and how players may participate. Compare those statements with the game’s update history and posted update events; a plan is more useful when you can assess it against what has happened so far.

Steam adds a store-page notice when more than 12 months have passed without the game being updated and without the developer posting an “update” type event to tell players about it. Treat the notice as a reason to investigate, not as an explanation of the delay or a prediction of what will happen next. Steam does not provide a completion-rate statistic in the cited buyer guidance, so this notice should not be used to infer how likely a game is to be abandoned.
Understand the risk of an unfinished game
The developer decides when a game is ready to leave Early Access. A planned duration or release date is the developer’s plan, not a Steam guarantee, and Steam warns that some developers may be unable to finish their games. Buy for the experience currently offered, while treating future features, timing, and completion as uncertain.

Steam says that buying an Early Access game gives you access to its current form and as it evolves. You keep access when it moves out of Early Access; Steam’s FAQ does not say you must buy it again for that transition.
Know how Steam refunds apply
Steam’s general refund policy says games and software can be refunded within 14 days of purchase if you have played for less than two hours. Early Access does not pause that limit: Steam says all playtime counts toward the two-hour threshold. To request a refund, use Steam Support. You can still submit a request outside the usual criteria, but approval is not guaranteed. The policy page cited here was last updated April 23, 2024; check the live policy before buying for the current terms.

Do not mistake Early Access for Advance Access
Early Access means a game is being sold while it is still in development. Advance Access is an option attached to some pre-purchase editions that lets buyers play before the official release; it does not by itself mean the game is undergoing ongoing Early Access development. Whether Advance Access is offered is up to the developer or publisher. See Steam’s Advance Access explanation for the distinction.
A practical way to compare Early Access listings
If you are choosing between games, compare the factors that affect your decision rather than treating Early Access as a single quality rating:

- Current playable state: Which game offers an experience you would enjoy now?
- Fit with your interests: How well does the existing build match the kind of game you want?
- Development plan: Is the developer’s description of the current state and intended work specific enough for you to judge?
- Communication and update events: What has the developer shared recently, and how does that compare with the plan?
- Price: Would you consider the current build worth the amount you are paying, even if future plans change?
- Risk tolerance: Are you willing to accept bugs, missing features, changing plans, or the possibility that the game will not be completed?
These are decision factors drawn from Steam’s buyer guidance, not an official Steam scoring system. Check each game’s own listing for its current price, requirements, controls, reviews, and development history; those details vary by title.
