For a first race, the key difference is the setting: Supercross is held on a custom-built course inside a stadium, while Pro Motocross takes place outdoors on natural terrain. Check your specific event page before you go: afternoon qualifying may start well before the evening show, FanFest may require separate admission, and stadium rules determine what you can bring.
Supercross and motocross are different race formats
Supercross (often abbreviated SX) is the stadium format. Riders race on a compact, custom-designed track with constructed obstacles, where the series describes the challenge as one of technical precision, consistency, and athleticism. Pro Motocross, often called MX, is an outdoor format on natural terrain, emphasizing speed and endurance. They are related forms of off-road motorcycle racing, but the venue and track design make for different spectator experiences.
The 450 class is the premier Supercross class; the 250 class gives emerging riders a showcase. The series describes a typical Monster Energy AMA Supercross season as 17 rounds, usually running from January through early May. Dates and schedules change by season, so use the current official Supercross event information when planning.
What happens during a Supercross event?
The night show is not necessarily the start of the event. Practice and qualifying begin in the afternoon, and FanFest overlaps with qualifying in most markets, according to the series FAQ. The selected round’s event page is the authority for that day’s local schedule; do not assume every event follows precisely the same running order.

Qualifying and main events
Qualifying heats determine which riders advance. The series FAQ describes each 450- and 250-class main event as featuring 22 riders. It lists the 450 main as 20 minutes plus one lap and the 250 main as 15 minutes plus one lap. Those are race-format descriptions, not a promise of the total time you will spend at the venue: the full program also includes earlier activity and transitions.
Triple Crown rounds
Some rounds use a Triple Crown format, with three main events. The overall winner is determined by best average finish across those races. This is an event-specific format, so check the selected round’s listing rather than expecting three mains at every race.

The American Motorcyclist Association dates the first professional motocross race on a temporary track at Daytona International Speedway to 1971; the stadium format followed in 1972, beginning at the Los Angeles Coliseum. That history helps explain why the terms describe distinct settings, rather than interchangeable names for one event.
Understand FanFest and ticket access before you buy
FanFest is a separate pre-race experience where offered. The organizer describes activities that can include rider and team access, qualifying viewing, photo opportunities, sponsor activities, merchandise, family activities, and food or vendor areas in select markets. These are possible offerings, not a guarantee that every activity will be available at every round.

The series FAQ says FanFest is absent in Detroit, and notes an Indianapolis exception to its empty-can admission offer. Because availability and procedures can change, check the chosen round’s current event page for whether FanFest is offered, its timing, and its entry instructions.
According to the FAQ, guests age two and older need both a main-event ticket and FanFest access to attend both portions. Children age two and older need tickets for events, but local public-event rules may require a ticket at any age. Confirm the policy with the event and venue before purchasing or traveling.

Read the current terms from the ticket seller for the event you are buying; do not rely on a general rule to determine whether a specific purchase can be changed.

- Confirm the event details. Open the selected event’s detail page and check its date, local schedule, doors, FanFest time, and event-specific notes. The series FAQ directs guests to the event page for exact FanFest timing.
- Check venue entry rules. Look up the stadium’s current customer-relations guidance for bag size, cameras, outside food and drink, and other restricted or allowed items. Supercross defers to local venue policies, so there is no single league-wide packing rule.
- Plan what to wear. The official guidance recommends comfortable clothing and practical shoes. Expect walking and stadium steps; choose footwear accordingly.
- Plan transport and parking. Use the selected stadium’s current information for routes, parking, and arrival logistics. Arrangements are venue-specific.
- Consider hearing protection. Ear protection can be a sensible comfort item at a loud motorsport event, particularly for children. The official event information reviewed does not set an ear-protection requirement or provide a spectator noise measurement.
- Verify FanFest access. If you want to attend, confirm that it is offered at your round and whether each person needs separate access.
What first-time fans can expect
Supercross is a spectator event built around more than the main race: afternoon track activity, qualifying, and, where offered, FanFest can make the visit considerably longer than the evening show alone. Arriving time, permitted items, and child ticket requirements depend on the event and stadium, so the reliable plan is to check both the organizer’s event listing and the venue’s own rules shortly before race day.
