Keep at least three days of shelf-stable food for every household member, plus at least one gallon of water per person per day for three days. Choose foods that can be eaten with little or no cooking, added water, or refrigeration, and account for infants, pets, allergies, medical needs, and dietary restrictions.
How much food and water should you keep?
FoodSafety.gov recommends keeping at least a three-day supply of nonperishable food. Treat that as a minimum and build a longer reserve if your household needs or local hazards call for it. The recommendation is U.S. federal guidance; follow local emergency-management advice where it differs.
The CDC’s June 27, 2025 emergency water guidance recommends at least one gallon of water per person per day for three days, and says to try to store a two-week supply if possible. Plan extra water for pregnancy, illness, pets, or hot climates. Water needs can exceed the baseline, so do not treat it as a maximum.
What foods should you keep for emergencies?
USDA FSIS examples include foods that are shelf-stable and easy to serve: dried fruit; canned fruit and vegetables; canned meat, poultry, or fish; peanut butter and jelly; small packages of cereal, granola bars, and crackers; nonfat dry milk; and small juice boxes. Choose familiar products household members will eat, and favor foods that can be eaten cold or prepared with minimal water and a safe heat source.

Avoid relying heavily on very salty or spicy foods when water may be scarce. Check each product’s instructions and consider whether its preparation would use water or fuel you may not have.
How to adapt the supply to your household
Build the supply around everyone who may rely on it, not just the household’s typical adult meals. CDC’s Personal Needs guidance identifies ready-to-feed infant formula and nutrition drinks as examples for infants and people with specific needs.

What tools and storage conditions matter?
If your plan includes canned food, keep a manual can opener with it. Store food in a cool, dry, dark place, away from heat, chemicals, pests, and floodwater. FoodSafety.gov lists 40°F to 70°F (4°C to 21°C) as the best storage range for canned or dried foods. Check dates and use and replace supplies before they expire.

Shelf-stable food reduces reliance on refrigeration, but an outage can also affect food already in the refrigerator or freezer. FoodSafety.gov recommends appliance thermometers, keeping the refrigerator at or below 40°F (4°C) and the freezer at or below 0°F (-18°C), and having coolers and frozen gel packs available.
