If its security support has ended, it is less secure because the manufacturer no longer sends it security fixes. That does not mean the phone has been hacked, or that you must immediately buy the newest model. When practical, move sensitive accounts and everyday phone use to a supported device; if you hand the old phone over, back it up, remove your accounts, erase it, and transfer or remove its SIM service.
Check whether security support has actually ended
Update support is specific to the phone model. A device that no longer gets the newest Android or iOS features may still receive security patches; do not treat those situations as identical. Check the manufacturer’s official support page for your exact model, and check with your carrier if updates are delivered through it. The UK National Cyber Security Centre recommends checking whether a specific device still receives updates, rather than assuming support based on age. NCSC guidance on software and app updates
Check update status on a Pixel
On a Google Pixel, open Settings > System > Software update to check for available updates. Google’s support page also lists update commitments by model. For another Android phone, consult its maker or carrier; for an iPhone, check available updates and Apple’s current device and security information. Pixel support periods are not universal Android rules
Google’s current Pixel support page says Pixel 8 and later receive seven years of OS and security updates from the model’s first availability on the Google Store in the United States. It gives five years from first US Google Store availability for Pixel 6 and 7 generation phones, including Pixel Fold. The page lists Pixel 5a and earlier as no longer receiving Android version or security updates. Apple explains that a previous operating-system version may not receive fixes for every known security issue: some fixes depend on changes to the system or its architecture. So a phone missing the newest feature release is not automatically unsupported, but being on an older OS does not guarantee that every security issue is patched. If the phone is still supported, install available updates
Install system updates and app updates when they are available, and enable automatic updates if that suits you. Recheck the manufacturer’s support information periodically, especially if the phone is important for work, banking, or other accounts. Updates can include security enhancements; older software may also encounter app-compatibility limitations, though that is not certain for every phone. Android’s update explainer

If support has ended, decide how much you still want to rely on it
The NCSC says a phone without manufacturer security updates is less secure. That is a reason to plan, not evidence that a particular device has been compromised. Available guidance does not establish a safe number of months or years to keep using a specific unsupported phone, nor does it quantify the chance of an attack against your handset. Your decision depends on what you use the phone for, what sensitive accounts or data it holds, your exposure, and whether a supported alternative is practical. Prioritize sensitive activities
If you can, use a supported phone for important accounts and sensitive information. If replacement must wait, install any updates that remain available, limit the unsupported phone’s role in sensitive tasks, and make a plan to move to a supported device. These are cautious risk-reduction steps, not substitutes for the manufacturer’s security fixes. Using only app-store downloads or installing an antivirus app does not restore operating-system support.

Choose whether to replace, repurpose, or retire it
A supported replacement is the clearest choice if you depend on the phone for sensitive accounts or want ongoing security fixes. You do not necessarily need the newest or most expensive phone. Compare the exact model’s support policy, price, compatibility with essential apps and accessibility features, carrier compatibility, and trade-in or recycling arrangements. Verify current product details before buying; support policies, availability, and local recycling terms vary.
Some owners may repurpose an unsupported phone for low-sensitivity offline tasks. That does not make it secure: any network-connected use remains subject to its patch status. Retire or recycle it if it is unreliable, no longer useful, or you do not want to accept the remaining risk.

Prepare the old phone before trade-in, recycling, or handoff
Back up and transfer the information you need before erasing the device. Factory reset removes on-device data; follow the instructions for your exact model and the requirements of the trade-in provider or recycler.

- Back up and transfer. Save needed photos, files, messages, and other information, then set up or verify the information on your replacement phone.
- Remove accounts and erase the phone. On many Android devices, the reset option is under Settings > System > Reset options > Erase all data, but menus vary. Google’s reset guidance explains account removal and factory reset. Apple also recommends backing up and erasing an iPhone before trade-in; for Android devices, its preparation guide says to back up, sign out, and erase. - Handle SIM service. Remove a physical SIM. For an eSIM, contact your carrier about transferring or suspending service.
- Check handoff requirements. Follow the provider’s instructions, including any steps for account sign-out or activation locks, before sending or giving away the phone.
