If your new MacBook won’t charge or turn on, first check the supplied cable, adapter, and outlet. Then hold the power button for about 10 seconds, press it normally, and retry with accessories disconnected. If it still shows no response, contact Apple Support or the seller rather than opening the laptop or buying unverified parts.
First, tell whether the Mac is off or the screen is blank
A Mac with no lights, sounds, or other sign of power needs the power checks below. If it seems to start but the display remains blank, use the separate startup steps in Apple’s blank-screen guidance. The distinction matters: a blank display does not necessarily mean the Mac is failing to charge.
If there is no sign of power, try these checks
- Check the power connection. Inspect the cable for visible damage, then make sure it is firmly connected to the Mac and to a working electrical outlet. If you have another compatible cable or adapter, Apple recommends trying it. See Apple’s no-power troubleshooting steps.
- Hold the power button, then press it normally. Press and hold the power button for about 10 seconds. Release it, then press and release it normally to try to start the Mac. On a Mac laptop with Touch ID, press and hold the Touch ID button; touching it briefly is not the same step.
- Disconnect accessories and retry. Unplug USB devices, hubs, external drives, printers, phones, and other connected accessories. Then repeat the power-button steps.
- Get support if it remains unresponsive. Apple says the Mac may need service if it still will not turn on after these checks. Since it is new, contact Apple Support or the seller for help with the specific model and any applicable warranty or return process. The available remedy depends on your situation; do not assume a particular coverage outcome.
Check charging equipment without guessing at compatibility
MacBook charging connectors and adapter requirements vary by model. For example, Apple’s MacBook Air charging guide describes charging with the included USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable or, on compatible Thunderbolt ports, a USB-C charge cable. That Air-specific guidance is not a universal specification for every MacBook.
- Start with the cable and adapter that came in the box, and check that the outlet works. Apple recommends the supplied cable and adapter for the best charging experience; its adapter and MagSafe troubleshooting guidance also says to use the correct adapter wattage.
- Confirm the exact MacBook model before looking for replacement equipment. Check the connector type and the adapter wattage specified for that model rather than assuming all USB-C or MagSafe equipment is interchangeable.
- MagSafe 2 and older MagSafe adapters are not compatible with MagSafe 3. If an adapter repeatedly switches itself off when connected to a known-good outlet, Apple recommends having it evaluated at an Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider.
- If you need a replacement cable, search by the exact model and connector—for example, “USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable for MacBook” only when the Mac supports MagSafe 3. For a new device that may have arrived faulty, contact the seller or Apple before purchasing accessories.
Apple says a new MacBook Air arrives with battery charge for initial use and advises using the in-box adapter and cable to fully charge it. That statement is specific to MacBook Air setup guidance and does not establish the battery condition of every MacBook model or every delivery.

If the Mac seems to start but the display stays blank
- Hold the power button for up to 10 seconds to turn the Mac off, then turn it on again, following Apple’s blank-screen troubleshooting guidance.
- If it remains blank and you can access startup options on an Apple silicon Mac, press and hold the power button through startup until the startup-options screen appears. Apple explains this in its startup-options instructions.
- If these steps do not resolve the issue, contact Apple Support or an Apple Authorised Service Provider. Apple also documents firmware revive or restore as a rare option that requires another Mac and a suitable USB-C data cable; it is not a sensible first step for a new Mac that will not start. When to stop troubleshooting
Stop after checking the power connection, holding and pressing the power button, disconnecting accessories, and retrying. If the Mac remains dead—or the adapter continues shutting itself off on a known-good outlet—ask Apple or the seller to assess it. Do not open a new MacBook or attempt battery replacement.
