If your bra feels too tight, first pinpoint where it hurts: the band, cups, wires, or straps. A looser hook or extender can help when the cups and wires fit and only the band is slightly snug. If breast tissue spills from the cups or a wire presses on breast tissue, reassess the cup size or style instead. Replace a bra when wear has left it unsupportive, misshapen, or irritating.
Find where the pressure is coming from
Notice whether discomfort is around your ribcage, at the cup edge, under your arm, where the center front meets your chest, beneath a wire, or on your shoulders. Then check how the bra sits: the band should be close to your body and level at the front and back, without painful digging. It should stay in place when you raise your arms.
- Band: If it digs painfully into your ribcage or rides up, check its hook setting and whether the cups fit.
- Cups: Spillage over the top or sides, or loose fabric, can indicate that the cup size or shape does not suit you.
- Wires and center front: Wires should sit around the breast, not on breast tissue. A wire or center front that presses uncomfortably may point to a cup or style mismatch.
- Straps: Straps should not dig into your shoulders or have to provide all the support. If they are too tight, loosen them rather than using them to compensate for a loose band.
These clues can overlap. A tight feeling does not necessarily mean the band alone is the problem.
Try the smallest adjustment that fits the problem
If the cups and wires feel right but the band is slightly tight
Move the fastening to a looser hook if one is available. If you are already using the loosest setting and the cups and wires remain comfortable, a bra extender can add limited room. It is an adjustment for a slightly snug band, not a fix for cups that spill, wires that sit on breast tissue, or an unsuitable shape.

If the straps are digging in
Loosen them and check whether the band remains level and supportive. Tightening straps to make up for a band that does not fit can add shoulder pressure without correcting the underlying fit.
Reassess the cup and band together
If breast tissue spills from the cups, the wires sit on breast tissue, or the center front is uncomfortable, consider a different cup size or shape rather than simply loosening the band. If the band alone is too tight, try a larger back size and check that the cups still contain the breast comfortably.

Changing the band size can also change cup fit, so evaluate the two together rather than relying on the size printed on the label. Sizing varies among brands, styles, designs, and fabrics; the same label does not guarantee the same fit in every bra.
Consider a different style or replace a worn bra
A particular wire shape or cup design may be uncomfortable even when the nominal size seems plausible. If wires are the source of discomfort, a non-wired style may be worth trying; bralettes and soft-cup bras are examples of wire-free alternatives.

Consider replacing a bra when its band remains loose and unsupportive even on the tightest hooks, its cups or padding have changed shape, or a wire is exposed or irritating. These are condition-based signs, not a universal timetable: there is no established replacement interval that applies to every bra.

Bra fit can change as your body changes. Factors listed in an NHS-affiliated fitting guide include the menstrual cycle, pregnancy and breastfeeding, menopause, and weight change. If a bra that once fit comfortably now feels tight, reassessing fit may be useful.

An NHS-affiliated guide says wearing an ill-fitting bra is not linked to breast cancer; that does not identify the cause of any individual’s pain. A tight or poorly fitting bra can be associated with discomfort or skin irritation, but persistent or concerning symptoms should not be assumed to be a sizing problem. Seek appropriate medical advice if symptoms continue or worry you.
