Start by checking Settings > Battery and Battery Health on your Apple Watch. Then look for a recent watchOS update, cellular use or weak signal, Always On display, long outdoor workouts, and audio playing through the watch speaker. These checks help distinguish a temporary change in use from reduced battery capacity; drain rate alone does not identify a hardware fault.
Check battery use and battery health
- On your watch, open Settings > Battery to review the remaining charge and recent charge history. See Apple’s guide to checking battery health and usage.
- Open Battery > Battery Health and check Maximum Capacity. This percentage compares the battery’s current capacity with its capacity when new. Rechargeable batteries lose capacity as they chemically age, and lower capacity can mean less time between charges. Apple explains this in Apple Watch Battery and Performance.
Battery life depends on both the age of the watch and how it is used. Apple does not give a universal runtime for every fast-drain situation, so compare your watch’s pattern with its usual use rather than treating one setting or a single charge as a diagnosis.
Did the change start after a watchOS update?
After an update, some related tasks may continue in the background even when the watch is ready to use. If the drain began just after installing watchOS, Apple advises waiting a few days and checking battery life again. This is one possible temporary cause, not a guarantee that every post-update drain will resolve on its own. See Apple’s fast-drain troubleshooting guidance.
Check connection and signal conditions
Apple Watch is most efficient when connected to its paired iPhone over Bluetooth. Keep the phone within range when practical and when longer battery life matters. If the iPhone is away, Apple says Wi-Fi uses less power than mobile networks. Weak Wi-Fi or mobile signal can also increase power use as the watch maintains a connection; airplane mode is an option when there is no useful coverage.

These choices involve a trade-off: keeping the iPhone nearby or relying on local Wi-Fi may mean less independence from the phone or less flexibility away from Wi-Fi. Apple covers connection conditions in its battery-drain guidance.
Choose power-saving settings for your situation
Use Low Power Mode when runtime matters more than some features
To enable it, press the side button to open Control Center, tap the battery percentage, then turn on Low Power Mode. The watchOS 26 guide says you can schedule it for one, two, or three days. Low Power Mode turns off or changes selected functions, including Always On, background heart-rate and blood-oxygen measurements, heart-rate notifications, and some connections or notifications. Turn off Always On separately
If you do not need the display continuously visible, open Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On and turn it off. The trade-off is that the display will no longer remain continuously visible. Apple lists this option in its fast-drain guidance.
Reduce background app refresh if appropriate
Open Settings > General > Background App Refresh to switch refresh off globally or for individual apps. Apple notes that complications on the current watch face can still refresh even when background refresh is off for their app. See the watchOS 26 guide.

Consider workout tracking on long outdoor sessions
On supported models, Low Power Mode can also reduce the frequency of GPS and heart-rate readings during outdoor walking, running, or hiking workouts. This option requires watchOS 9.1 or later and is available on Apple Watch SE (2nd generation), Series 8 and later, and Ultra and later. Fewer readings can extend use during a long workout, but provide less frequent tracking data. Apple describes the behavior in its fast-drain guidance.

Newer Apple Watch models can play audio through their built-in speaker, but Apple says speaker playback can drain the battery more quickly. If you listen to audio from the watch, use AirPods or another Bluetooth audio device for better battery efficiency. This is relevant to speaker use, not a general fix for battery drain. Leave charging optimization enabled
Optimised Battery Charging and, on supported models, Optimised Charge Limit are intended to help maintain battery capacity over its lifespan. Turning Optimised Charge Limit off can increase battery wear and reduce battery lifespan, so changing it is not a routine fix for a watch that discharges quickly. Apple discusses charging optimization in Apple Watch Battery and Performance.
Contact Apple Support if Battery Health indicates service
If Battery Health displays “Battery Needs Service”, or you believe the battery needs replacement, contact Apple Support. Fast drain by itself does not establish a specific hardware failure. Service options depend on your watch model and location; Apple’s troubleshooting guidance directs owners to support when service may be needed.
