If you disabled the only DHCP service on your network, devices set to obtain an address automatically cannot get a new lease from it. Restore DHCP or configure each device with a unique, correct static address. A Windows device may instead assign itself an address in the 169.254.x.y range; that fallback is generally limited to communication on the same local network.

Why devices stop getting IP addresses when DHCP is disabled

DHCP automatically assigns network settings to clients. A client normally broadcasts a DHCP Discover message, receives an Offer, sends a Request, and gets an Acknowledgement. If the only DHCP server or router for that network is disabled or unreachable, the exchange cannot complete, so a client configured for automatic addressing cannot obtain a lease from that service. Microsoft describes this process and the role of a DHCP relay when clients and servers are on different logical network segments in its DHCP troubleshooting guidance.

Disabling DHCP does not itself assign replacement addresses. The network can still operate with manually configured addresses, but those settings must fit the network’s addressing plan. If DHCP was disabled by mistake, restoring an authorized DHCP service is usually simpler than manually configuring every client.

What a 169.254 address means

On Windows, an address beginning with 169.254 is a sign that Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA) was used after the computer could not obtain a DHCP address. Microsoft documents the APIPA range as 169.254.0.0–169.254.255.255, with subnet mask 255.255.0.0, in its TCP/IP addressing and subnetting documentation.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

APIPA may allow compatible devices configured in that same address range to communicate on the same local network. It does not provide a normal default gateway for reaching other subnets or the internet. Seeing a 169.254 address is therefore a useful clue that automatic address assignment failed, not evidence that the network has a complete working configuration.

Restore or provide DHCP

If the network is meant to use automatic addressing, enable the existing DHCP service or arrange for an authorized DHCP server to serve the correct subnet. In a segmented network, a relay may be needed to forward DHCP traffic between clients and the server. Check with the network administrator before enabling another server: competing or unauthorized DHCP services can hand out incorrect settings.

Configure clients manually for a static network

If DHCP is intentionally unavailable, configure each device with a unique address in the correct subnet, the matching subnet mask, and—when required—the appropriate default gateway and DNS servers. Obtain these values from the network administrator or the router’s documented LAN settings. Do not copy sample addresses from general documentation: the right values depend on the local network.

Keep manually assigned addresses outside any range that a DHCP server may later lease, or configure exclusions in the server’s scope. Microsoft’s DHCP deployment guidance recommends identifying statically configured devices and planning exclusions to prevent duplicate assignments. An address conflict can disrupt connectivity for the device using the static address and the client receiving the same address from DHCP.

Use a reservation when DHCP will remain available

A DHCP reservation is not the same as configuring a static address on the device. With a reservation, a DHCP-capable client continues requesting its settings from the server, which assigns it a consistent address—often based on the network adapter’s MAC address. The server must remain available. A device-side static configuration does not rely on DHCP, but address selection and conflict prevention must be managed for that device. Microsoft explains reservations in its DHCP deployment guidance.

Option Does DHCP need to be available? Where settings are managed Key consideration
Restore DHCP Yes DHCP server or router Best fit when clients should receive settings automatically.
DHCP reservation Yes Reservation on the server; client remains set to DHCP Provides a consistent assigned address without configuring a static address on the device.
Static address on the device No Each device Requires a unique address, correct network settings, and coordination with DHCP pools that might later be used.
APIPA fallback on Windows No DHCP lease is obtained Assigned automatically by Windows Can support limited same-LAN communication, but is not a substitute for routed access.

If DHCP should still be working, troubleshoot the connection

First establish whether DHCP was deliberately disabled and whether another authorized server is meant to serve the network. If it should be active, inspect the client and server path rather than relying on repeated renew attempts. Microsoft recommends checking connectivity and DHCP operation, then using a network trace to determine whether the DHCP exchange completes or packets are being dropped in its troubleshooting guidance.

  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
  • Client and link: Confirm the network adapter is enabled, the physical link is present, and the cable or wireless connection works. Check the adapter status and driver.
  • Windows client service: Verify that the DHCP Client service is running.
  • Filtering: Check firewalls and network filters for blocked DHCP traffic, including UDP ports 67 and 68.
  • DHCP server: Confirm the service is running and authorized, serving the correct interface and subnet, and that the relevant scope has available leases.
  • Relay and network path: If the client and server are on different logical segments, verify the relay and the path to the server.
  • Protocol exchange: A packet trace can show whether Discover, Offer, Request, and Acknowledgement messages are exchanged or where they stop.

On Windows, run ipconfig /all to inspect the adapter’s address, DHCP status, gateway, and DNS details. ipconfig /release followed by ipconfig /renew can help in appropriate situations, such as after moving a client to another subnet, but renewing cannot obtain a lease from a DHCP service that remains disabled. Microsoft documents that subnet-change scenario in its DHCP renewal troubleshooting article.

Before changing address settings

  • Confirm which subnet the device is supposed to use and who administers its address plan.
  • Use an address that is not already assigned to another device and will not be leased from a DHCP pool.
  • Set the appropriate subnet mask; add a gateway and DNS servers if the device needs access beyond the local network or name resolution.
  • Do not assume that APIPA or a DHCP reservation works like a manually configured static address: each serves a different purpose and has different dependencies.

Microsoft’s Windows documentation is specific to the documented Windows behavior and DHCP server configurations; it does not establish click-by-click settings for every router, macOS, iOS, Android, or Linux distribution. For those devices, use instructions for the specific operating system and network equipment.
