If a UPI payment is pending or failed after your account was debited, first check its status in the app’s transaction history and note the transaction reference. Don’t send the payment again while the first transaction is unresolved. What happens next—and the formal reversal deadline—depends on whether you paid another person or a merchant.
Check the transaction and identify what happened
- Open the UPI app you used. Go to its transaction history and open the payment. If it is pending and the app offers a refresh option, refresh the status; NPCI’s UPI Help guidance says this can update the transaction status. Record the transaction ID or reference, date and time, amount, displayed status, and any complaint reference. Keep the details private.
- Check whether your account was debited. Compare the app entry with your bank statement. Also check with the recipient or merchant whether the money arrived or the merchant received confirmation.
- Classify the payment. A funds transfer is a payment to a person or another beneficiary account. A merchant payment is a payment where the merchant is meant to receive confirmation. RBI sets different reversal deadlines for these two cases.
A pending status is not proof that the money is either permanently lost or finally credited. NPCI describes a pending debit with no beneficiary credit as a delay at the beneficiary bank; delayed confirmation can also leave the outcome unclear. Check the app’s current status and ask your bank to confirm if needed.
What to do for each UPI status
Failed, and your account was debited
NPCI’s UPI FAQ says a failed transaction with a debit should be refunded. It advises contacting your bank if the refund has not arrived within one hour. That is NPCI’s consumer guidance; the formal RBI reversal deadline depends on whether it was a funds transfer or a merchant payment, as shown below.
Pending, debited, but the recipient has not received the money
NPCI’s FAQ says this can be a delay at the beneficiary bank and that the amount should reach the recipient within 48 hours after the bank’s daily settlements. Refresh the transaction status if the app allows it. Avoid making a duplicate payment until the first one is resolved, so you do not risk paying twice.

Merchant says it did not receive confirmation
Check whether the merchant’s payment system shows the transaction as paid before trying again. A debit without confirmation at the merchant is covered by a different RBI auto-reversal deadline from a funds transfer with no beneficiary credit. Keep the transaction details and any merchant receipt or order reference for your complaint.
App says successful, but you believe the payment was incorrect
NPCI says a UPI payment cannot be stopped once initiated. If the app marks it successful, use the app’s complaint option and contact your bank to report the issue; do not assume a stop-payment or reversal is available. An unintended or fraudulent transfer is a different complaint from a failed or pending payment and needs prompt bank contact.

RBI reversal deadlines and compensation
RBI’s circular, Harmonisation of Turn Around Time (TAT) and customer compensation for failed transactions using authorised Payment Systems, dated 20 September 2019, sets these timelines for the specified failed-transaction cases. “T” means the transaction date in the circular’s framework.
| UPI case | Auto-reversal deadline | Compensation for delay beyond deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Funds transfer: payer debited, but beneficiary account not credited | Beneficiary bank must reverse the transaction by T+1 day if the beneficiary cannot be credited. | ₹100 per day beyond T+1 day. |
| Merchant payment: payer debited, but transaction confirmation not received at the merchant location | Auto-reversal within T+5 days. | ₹100 per day beyond T+5 days. |
The circular says the TAT framework is intended to make compensation automatic: “The principle behind the TAT is based on the objective to ensure that the customer is compensated without waiting for the complaint or claim from the customer.” The quoted principle does not remove the need to report an unresolved transaction or check its status. These deadlines apply to the cases in the table; they are not one universal deadline for every UPI dispute.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Raise a complaint and follow it through
- Use the payment’s in-app help option. Open the transaction in history and choose the complaint or help option available for that payment. NPCI’s July 2023 UPI Help guidance says supported debit-transaction complaints can be raised after five minutes and describes how to check complaint status. The flow excludes successful person-to-person transactions from the specified complaint scope, so the options may differ by transaction.
- Keep the references together. Save the UPI transaction ID, date and time, amount, status, relevant bank-statement entry, and each app or bank complaint reference. Include payer or beneficiary details only as the app requests; do not share account credentials, PINs, or OTPs.
- Contact the payer’s bank if the debit remains unresolved. Give the bank the transaction details and complaint reference. NPCI’s FAQ directs customers to their bank when a failed debit has not been refunded. NPCI’s complaint-registration page also says users can check final status with the member bank or institution using transaction details or the complaint reference.
- Use the bank’s formal grievance process if the issue continues. Ask the bank how to escalate an unresolved complaint and confirm the current requirements and eligibility for any further RBI complaint route. Procedures and response times can vary; there is no single bank-specific escalation contact established here.
App labels and support flows can differ. Use the complaint category the app actually offers for your transaction, and keep records of what you submit and when.

What not to assume
- A pending status does not by itself show whether the recipient has ultimately been credited. Check for an updated status or obtain confirmation from the bank.
- A successful status is not the same as a failed debit awaiting automatic reversal. NPCI says an initiated payment cannot be stopped.
- The one-hour, 48-hour, five-minute, T+1, and T+5 figures have different meanings: NPCI consumer guidance, a complaint-flow minimum, and RBI regulatory reversal deadlines. Apply each only to the situation described above.
