First identify whether the gadget needs Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or both; then check power, compatibility, setup mode, and signal before resetting anything. For Wi-Fi, testing other devices on the same network—and the gadget on another network—helps reveal whether the fault is with the gadget, router, or internet connection.
Start by identifying the connection it needs
A gadget may join your home Wi-Fi, pair directly with a phone or computer over Bluetooth, or use both during app-based setup. Check the product’s specifications and setup instructions to confirm which connection it supports and whether it works with your host device. Do not assume every computer has Bluetooth: Microsoft notes that some Windows devices do not include it.
Try the low-risk checks first
- Charge the gadget or replace its batteries if appropriate. Low power can interrupt setup or prevent a connection.
- Turn the gadget off and back on, and confirm that Bluetooth or Wi-Fi is enabled on the phone or computer.
- Bring the gadget close to the host device for Bluetooth pairing, or near the router during Wi-Fi setup. Walls, distance, and other obstructions can weaken a signal.
- Follow the gadget’s own setup instructions. A device being powered on does not necessarily mean it is ready to be discovered or configured.
Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance lists power, range, and Bluetooth being turned off among common checks; Apple also recommends checking charge and proximity.
If the gadget will not pair over Bluetooth
Put it in pairing mode
Use the manufacturer’s instructions to enable pairing or discovery mode. The button, timing, and indicator vary by product, so a generic button sequence may not work. The gadget must be discoverable as well as powered on; Microsoft says it must be in pairing mode and within range of the PC.

Remove an old pairing and try again
If the gadget appears in the phone or computer’s saved Bluetooth devices but will not connect, remove or unpair it there, put the accessory back in pairing mode, and pair again. If it is already connected to another phone, tablet, or computer, disconnect or unpair it from that device before retrying.
Check the host device
On Windows, install available system updates and restart the computer if pairing still fails. Microsoft provides steps for troubleshooting Bluetooth in Windows and for adding a Bluetooth device. If Bluetooth is missing or unavailable, or no Bluetooth accessories connect, contact the computer or host-device maker.

Only if the PC has no Bluetooth hardware: a USB Bluetooth adapter for PC can add Bluetooth to a compatible Windows computer. Check the adapter’s compatibility with the PC and its operating system. It will not fix a gadget that is not charged or in pairing mode, and it does not solve Wi-Fi or router problems. Microsoft explains how to add a device using a USB Bluetooth adapter.
If the gadget will not join Wi-Fi
Check which Wi-Fi band it supports
Look up the gadget’s supported Wi-Fi bands in its specifications or setup instructions. Some smart-home devices support only 2.4 GHz and will not join a 5 GHz network. Neither band is right for every product; use the one the manufacturer specifies. Apple’s accessory setup guidance and Google’s Nest setup troubleshooting also recommend checking that the setup phone and accessory are using the required network arrangement and placing the device near the router during setup.

If the router uses one network name for both bands, check its app or documentation for a supported way to select or temporarily expose the band the gadget needs. Avoid changing router security settings unless the router maker or gadget manufacturer gives instructions for that specific model.
Check whether the network or gadget is the problem
- Try another phone, computer, or connected device on the same Wi-Fi network. If those devices also cannot get online, the issue may be with the router, modem, or internet service.
- Power-cycle the router and modem, then try setup again. Follow the equipment maker’s instructions if available.
- If other devices work but the new gadget does not, try connecting the gadget to another Wi-Fi network, if one is available. If it cannot connect anywhere, contact the gadget’s manufacturer. If it works elsewhere, focus on the home router’s settings or compatibility.
- If multiple devices still cannot get online after restarting the equipment, contact your internet provider. Google’s Nest setup troubleshooting includes checks for whether other devices can connect and steps for restarting network equipment.
When interference or a reset is worth considering
Bluetooth and many Wi-Fi devices use the 2.4 GHz band, so nearby wireless activity can sometimes contribute to connection trouble. Apple notes that using 5 GHz for Wi-Fi devices that support it may help. This is a possibility to test, not proof of interference: device compatibility, distance, and barriers such as metal can also affect the connection.

Leave network-settings resets until simpler checks have failed. On an Apple device, resetting network settings removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords, so you will need to enter them again. Apple describes this consequence in its Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance. Before resetting, check the gadget’s instructions and your host device’s support guidance for steps specific to its model and operating system.
