Start with the failed request and its structured error—not with a blanket model swap. A Gemini failure can mean that the model endpoint has shut down, the request is incompatible with the target model, the API version changed, or an SDK upgrade altered behavior. Record the exact model identifier, API version, SDK version, request parameters, error code and HTTP status, and the first failure time before editing code.
Capture the failure before changing code
Save one representative failing request and its complete response, with secrets and personal data removed. Preserve enough detail to compare what worked with what now fails.
- Exact model identifier, including whether it is a stable version,
latestalias, preview, or experimental model. - API surface and version, such as
v1orv1beta. - SDK name and version, request fields and parameters, and any recent deployment or dependency changes.
- HTTP status, structured error code and message, and timestamp of the first failure.
This snapshot helps separate an unavailable endpoint from a payload, API-version, or SDK compatibility problem.
Use the error to identify the failure class
model_not_found with HTTP 404
Google documents model_not_found in the Interactions API as a 404 meaning the specified model was not found. Verify the exact spelling and check the model’s current lifecycle and availability in Google’s Gemini deprecations page and model catalog. A shutdown turns the endpoint off; the deprecations page lists schedules and recommended replacements. If the model is no longer available, select a currently supported model that meets the app’s requirements. Google’s documented recommendation to verify the name or use another model is not a reason to swap models without checking compatibility.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
HTTP 400 or another request error
Do not interpret every 400 as a shutdown. Google distinguishes invalid_request (HTTP 400) from model_not_found (HTTP 404): the former indicates a malformed payload or invalid parameters. Compare the failing request with the current documentation for the target model and API, paying attention to fields and parameter values. The Gemini API errors reference describes documented codes and actions.
Failures that do not fit those cases
Keep the original status and structured response while checking recent model, API, and SDK changes. A change in one layer can coincide with another, so test each separately rather than treating the model name as the only variable.

Check what kind of model identifier the app uses
Google says stable model identifiers refer to specific versions and usually do not change, and recommends that most production apps use a specific stable model. By contrast, latest is a hot-swapped alias that points to new releases; Google says it gives two weeks’ email notice for breaking changes to the version behind that alias. Preview models may have more restrictive limits and are deprecated with at least two weeks’ notice. Experimental endpoint availability can change.
These categories carry different change risks. If production code uses an alias, preview, or experimental model, check its lifecycle and the date of any change before concluding that a stable model endpoint has been retired. A specific stable identifier can reduce unexpected version changes when it meets the workload’s needs, but it does not remove the need to monitor lifecycle notices.

Check the API version independently
A model identifier and API version are separate compatibility checks. Google describes v1 as stable, while v1beta exposes early features that may change while under development. An app that depends on a beta feature can therefore encounter compatibility changes independently of a model shutdown. Review the API version in the request and the feature dependencies against Google’s API versions explanation.
Apply migration instructions for the exact source and target
Migration changes are model- and API-specific. For example, Google’s instructions for moving from gemini-3-flash-preview to gemini-3.5-flash list the following changes. This checklist is not a universal recipe for other migrations.

- Change the model name to
gemini-3.5-flash. - Review pricing for the target model rather than assuming the old model’s cost carries over.
- Remove
temperature,top_p, andtop_kfrom configuration because they are no longer recommended for this target. - Replace
thinking_budgetwiththinking_level. - Add matching
idandnametoFunctionResponseparts. - Use
google-genaiSDK version 2.0.0 or later for this documented migration, while accounting for its breaking changes to the Interactions API.
Google’s migration guide, What’s new in Gemini 3.5 Flash, is the source for those target-specific steps. For a different source model, destination model, or API surface, consult that migration’s own instructions instead of copying these field changes.

- Lifecycle: Is the candidate currently available, and what lifecycle or shutdown schedule applies?
- Capabilities and inputs: Does it support the app’s required inputs, outputs, and tools or function calls?
- Request compatibility: Which API surface, version, fields, and SDK behavior does the candidate require?
- Cost and latency: Measure or review these for the actual workload, and check current pricing rather than relying on stale figures.
Google’s lifecycle page and model catalog help establish availability and model details; its migration guidance also calls out reviewing pricing. A replacement that fixes a 404 can still require request changes or behave differently for the application.
Validate the change before rollout
After applying the relevant migration, test representative application cases in a controlled environment. Compare the old and new behavior where possible, and verify:
- Input and output shapes expected by the application.
- Tool or function-call behavior, including response handling.
- Safety behavior and the app’s handling of refusals or other nonstandard outputs.
- Latency and cost for representative requests.
- Error handling, retries, timeouts, and any fallback path.
These are engineering checks for your application, not guarantees that Google has tested its particular workload. Roll out cautiously and retain a way to revert application-side changes if validation reveals a regression.
Check release notes against the incident date
When the first failure coincides with a documented change, use the date to narrow the investigation. Google’s release notes say that on May 6, 2026, it announced an Interactions API request/response schema change from outputs to steps; the new schema became the default May 26, and the legacy schema was removed June 8. Those dates matter when diagnosing incidents in that timeframe, especially if the app parses Interactions API responses.
Google’s June 1, 2026 release notes state that Gemini 2.0 Flash and Flash-Lite endpoints had shut down and point users to Gemini 3.5 Flash or Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite. Treat those as dated release-note guidance, not proof that a suggested endpoint remains available indefinitely; verify present availability before adopting one. For other incident dates, consult the full Gemini API release notes for overlapping model or schema changes.
