A delayed release does not automatically produce a refund. Your options depend on whether the preorder is digital or physical, which seller took your payment, when you paid, whether a preload or download started, whether you have played the game, the edition or bundle involved, and consumer law where you live. Start by saving the date-change notice, then follow the policy for the store that processed the order before downloading, streaming or playing anything.
What a changed release date means for your preorder
A publisher can move a release date after a preorder has been placed. The order may remain active for the revised date, or the seller may cancel it and issue a refund. There is no single worldwide rule requiring every seller to refund every delayed preorder.

- Payment timing: Some services authorize payment at checkout; others capture it shortly before release.
- Content status: A preload, download, stream or launch can end a platform’s ordinary cancellation window.
- Usage: On services with a playtime limit, starting the game can affect eligibility.
- Location: Statutory cancellation or digital-content rights vary by country and may add rights beyond a store’s normal policy.
- Order complexity: Collector’s editions, bundles, season passes and bonus items can be treated differently from a single standard edition.
A date change is therefore a reason to check your rights promptly, not proof that a refund will be automatic.

Do these things before contacting support
- Identify the transaction. Record the storefront or retailer, your country, edition, order number, payment date, original release date and revised release date. Check whether the order is digital, boxed or a bundle.
- Preserve the evidence. Save the preorder receipt, the email or store notice showing the old and new dates, the product page as displayed when possible, and your payment record. Keep the messages even if the product page now shows only the revised date.
- Stop activity that could narrow eligibility. Do not start the main download or stream while deciding. Review automatic-download or preload settings. If the game has already launched, avoid playing further until you know the applicable rule.
- Check the seller’s current policy. Use the rule for the store that charged you, not a policy from a different platform or the publisher’s general FAQ.
- Ask for a written outcome. If you cancel, request confirmation of the cancellation, refund amount, destination and expected processing time.
Digital storefront rules
The following windows are platform-specific. They are ordinary policy routes, not a guarantee that local law will provide the same result in every country.

PlayStation Store
PlayStation defines a preorder as content purchased from PlayStation Store before its release date. The timing of payment changes which request window applies. For a payment made more than 14 days before release, submit the cancellation request before the release date. For a payment made 14 days or less before release, submit it within 14 days of the payment date.
Both routes depend on the main preorder content not having started downloading or streaming. A background preload or an automatic download can therefore matter even if you have not opened the game. Check your console’s automatic-download settings and pause or cancel the activity while you decide. Add-ons or other items in an order may have separate treatment, so describe the exact product you want to cancel.

Nintendo eShop
Nintendo states that it charges the full purchase amount no sooner than seven days before a game’s release date. Its cancellation period ends when payment is processed and the game is preloaded. If the release moves before that point, the practical opportunity is to cancel before the new payment and preload event occurs. If payment has already been processed or preload has begun, ask support to review the order and check any consumer rights in your country rather than assuming the order is still cancelable.
Steam
Steam’s standard refund language allows a preorder refund any time before the game is released. After release, the usual rule is a request within two weeks and less than two hours of playtime. Do not launch the game merely to test whether you still want it if you are relying on that route; playtime is part of the test.
Steam also notes a special limitation for preorders more than six months old: the refund may be restricted to Steam Wallet credit. That limitation concerns the refund destination, not whether every old preorder is automatically refundable, so check the offer shown for your account and order.

Physical copies: the retailer controls the order
For a boxed game, contact the retailer named on your receipt. The platform on which you intend to play the game generally cannot cancel a separate retailer order or return its payment. Ask these questions in one message:

- Will the refund return to the original payment method, and when will it be submitted?
- Are any promotional, collector’s or bundled items handled separately?
Retailers often receive release dates from publishers or manufacturers and can change the date shown on an order. A retailer notice should tell you whether the order was canceled or merely rescheduled. Do not treat a changed product page as proof that your individual order was canceled; obtain written confirmation tied to your order number.

Use the store’s support form, chat or email so there is a record. Keep the request factual and identify the exact order:

“Order [number] was placed on [date]. The advertised release date changed from [old date] to [new date]. I want to cancel the preorder and receive a refund under your current policy. Please confirm whether payment was captured, whether any preload or download affects eligibility, the refund amount, and the payment method and date for the return.”
Attach the receipt and the date-change notice. If the first response is a generic denial, reply asking for the specific policy clause applied to your order and the next complaint or escalation channel. Keep names, case numbers and timestamps.
If the seller refuses
- Ask for the reason in writing. A useful response distinguishes a payment cutoff, a preload, playtime, an expired window, a bundle rule or a regional restriction.
- Send the evidence again. Include the order number, payment date, old and revised dates, and proof that you have not downloaded, streamed or played the main content when that condition applies.
- Escalate through the seller’s formal process. Request a supervisor review or the named complaints channel rather than opening duplicate cases that lose the original history.
- Check local consumer law. Platform terms do not necessarily replace statutory rights. A consumer authority, card issuer or other official dispute channel may explain the options available in your country, but a payment dispute should be used carefully and only after you understand its consequences for the account.
The exact statutory result depends on jurisdiction, seller, payment method, product type and whether digital content was supplied. There is no universal rule that guarantees a refund for every delayed preorder.

Preorder bonuses, editions and bundles
Preorder bonuses
A cancellation normally ends the order that qualified you for a preorder bonus. Whether a bonus is kept, removed, replaced or granted again with a new order is controlled by the seller’s terms and the specific promotion. Ask before canceling if the bonus has separate value to you, and request the answer in writing. Do not assume that a delayed date preserves the bonus indefinitely.
Collector’s and physical editions
Limited editions may involve deposits, manufacturing schedules, shipping charges or separate items. Ask whether the retailer can cancel the entire package or only the game portion, and whether a deposit is refundable. If the seller offers a replacement order for the new date, compare the edition contents and price before accepting it.
Bundles and season passes
A bundle can contain a base game, downloadable content, currency or access rights with different delivery dates. State whether you seek cancellation of the whole bundle or only the delayed game. A platform may evaluate each component separately, and starting one component can affect the rest of the request.
Choosing between keeping and canceling

What to expect after approval
Ask whether the seller is canceling the order or merely moving its fulfillment date. A refund may return only to the original payment method, while some services can apply a credit or wallet balance instead. Confirm the amount, currency, taxes, shipping and any deposit treatment. Keep the approval message until the credit appears on your card, bank account or wallet statement.
If the revised date changes again, repeat the evidence process: save the new notice, verify the order status and check whether a new payment or preload event is approaching. A product page that changes silently is not a substitute for an order-specific confirmation.
