When a game’s online service ends, its multiplayer, matchmaking, leaderboards, news, events, stores, cloud features, or account systems may stop working, but the entire game does not necessarily disappear. Read the publisher’s notice, record the cutoff, test the title without internet access, download owned content, preserve permitted local saves, and check what happens to currency, inventories, and unlocks before the deadline. The outcome is specific to that game, platform, edition, and region.
What a server shutdown actually removes
A game can contain both self-contained software and services that run on a publisher’s servers. A shutdown retires the latter first. The executable may still launch, while features that need a remote connection fail or disappear from menus.
Features most likely to end
- Online multiplayer, matchmaking, co-op sessions, and peer discovery.
- Leaderboards, player statistics, guild systems, messaging, and social feeds.
- Rotating events, challenges, news pages, daily rewards, and seasonal progression.
- Online stores, transactions, redemption servers, and account-linked inventories.
- Cloud saves, cross-progression, account authentication, and server-hosted profiles.
Features that may remain
Campaigns, local multiplayer, training modes, downloaded maps, and other self-contained content can remain usable. That is not automatic: a title may require an authentication check at launch, fetch missions or inventory from a server, or have no meaningful offline mode at all. A game can therefore be playable but permanently missing progression, rewards, maps, skins, or other content that depended on the retired service.

What to do before the cutoff date
Use the publisher’s notice as the controlling document. Service pages can change, and a date may be stated in a particular time zone, so record the exact time as well as the calendar date.

- Save the official announcement. Note the title, edition, region, cutoff time, and every listed feature that is being retired. Keep a local copy or screenshot in case the support page is later edited.
- Inventory your content. List owned expansions, maps, characters, skins, virtual currency, season items, achievements, and save slots. Mark which items are downloaded locally and which appear only after an account sign-in.
- Test a genuinely offline launch. Turn off Wi-Fi and unplug Ethernet, then start the game from its normal icon. Try the campaign, local multiplayer, menus, saved games, tutorials, and any mode you expect to use later. A game that works only after a successful online sign-in is not reliably offline.
- Install available updates. Apply the final supported game patch and system update while the publisher and platform still serve them. Some shutdowns include a last update that removes online checks or changes the title’s startup behavior.
- Download owned content. Install purchased DLC, expansions, language packs, bonus maps, and other entitlements. Do not assume that an item visible in your account will remain downloadable after delisting.
- Back up local data. Use the console’s supported backup feature or copy permitted PC save and configuration files to external storage. A backup preserves local files; it cannot recreate cloud databases, server inventories, matchmaking, or authentication.
- Spend or transfer virtual assets only under documented rules. If the publisher offers a conversion, refund, transfer, or redemption window, follow its instructions and deadline. Otherwise, do not assume that currency, paid items, or unclaimed rewards will survive.
- Complete announced migration steps. An offline patch or local-save transfer may require launching the game during a specific window, accepting terms, or installing a particular update. Keep the original installation until the transfer is confirmed.
How to verify that offline play will work
Do this test before the service closes, not after. Use the same hardware and account that you intend to keep.
- Synchronize or copy any current saves while online.
- Exit the game completely rather than resuming a suspended session.
- Disable the network connection at the device level.
- Launch the title and wait through its normal startup. Record any authentication, “server unavailable,” or account-selection message.
- Open a recent save and start a new game if possible.
- Test local multiplayer, downloadable maps, inventory screens, and settings that you care about.
- Quit, restart, and load the save again while still offline. This catches games that permit one cached session but require a server on the next launch.
If the title refuses to start, contact the publisher before the cutoff and search its support notice for an offline patch or an approved workaround. Do not treat a successful online launch as proof of future offline access.
Redownloads, delisting, and what you actually own
Removing a game from a storefront (delisting) and ending its servers are separate actions. A delisted title may remain in an account library and be redownloadable, or a platform may eventually remove the download. There is no universal guarantee, so check the relevant platform’s current policy and the game’s support page.

What happens to DLC, currency, inventories, and saves
Downloadable content and unlockable items
Content that is already installed may continue to work if it is checked locally. Content that must be redeemed from a server can become inaccessible. Ubisoft’s notices for older legacy titles illustrate this partial loss: online multiplayer, in-game news, and player statistics may be retired while offline features remain, and some unlockable maps or skins may no longer be redeemable.
Virtual currency and paid inventories
Server-hosted balances, cosmetic inventories, and account progression cannot be reconstructed from a local save unless the publisher deliberately exports them. Use a supported spending or transfer option only when the publisher describes one. Do not assume a balance can be refunded, transferred to another game, or converted to offline items.
Save data
A local save can preserve campaign progress, but it may contain only an identifier that points to a remote profile. Copying that file does not guarantee that inventory, achievements, cloud synchronization, or online characters will load later. Keep both the original local save and any migrated copy until you have tested the result.

What publishers have done in real shutdowns
Ubisoft legacy games
Ubisoft states that “the offline features of the games are unaffected and remain available to you” for the listed legacy titles. The statement applies to those listed games, not every title from the publisher. The same notices warn that online multiplayer, news, statistics, and some unlock redemption can end independently, so “offline available” does not mean “all content preserved.”
Nintendo 3DS and Wii U software
Nintendo discontinued online play and other online communication for 3DS and Wii U software at 5 p.m. PDT on April 8, 2024. Nintendo said that features and game modes not requiring online communication remained usable. It also said update data, purchased software, and downloadable content could still be redownloaded for the foreseeable future. This is an example of a platform maintaining download access after online play ended, not a promise that every platform will do the same.
Electronic Arts service updates
Electronic Arts says that “in some instances” a game may still be played and enjoyed offline after its online services are no longer available or supported. The qualification is important: the result depends on the specific game and the services being retired. Check the individual entry rather than relying on the publisher-wide wording.

PlayStation and Activision notices
PlayStation’s server-support listings show different outcomes by title. Some retain single-player challenges or offline modes; others have no offline mode, and online items disappear. Activision’s legacy-game guidance similarly indicates that online functionality and transactions are generally disabled where applicable, while offline campaigns may remain unaffected for some games.
Epic Games and other service notices
Publishers sometimes retire only selected older games or selected services, so a general announcement can be narrower than its headline suggests. Read the entry for your exact title, platform, edition, and region, including any note about patches, account data, or transactions.

Offline conversions and migration schedules
The best outcome is a supported conversion that moves the experience from a server to local data. Such conversions are optional publisher projects, not an automatic consequence of a shutdown.

SYNDUALITY Echo of Ada
Bandai Namco announced on September 26, 2026 that SYNDUALITY Echo of Ada would transition from an online service to an offline-exclusive game after May 2027, on a scheduled timetable. The announcement described planned save-data transfer to local save data in December 2026, a further announcement around March 2027, and the end of online service after May 2027. Players should follow the publisher’s migration instructions and deadlines; the example demonstrates what a supported offline conversion looks like, not a general industry requirement.
What to do after the servers close
- Start the documented offline mode with the network disabled.
- Check your account library or redownload page for an existing entitlement; do not equate delisting with immediate deletion.
- Expect matchmaking, online leaderboards, cloud-dependent systems, rotating events, and online stores to fail.
- Open local saves and confirm that installed DLC and offline unlocks still load.
- If a migration was promised but failed, preserve logs and screenshots, reinstall only from the publisher’s documented package, and contact official support. Avoid deleting the original save while investigating.
Replacement servers, modified clients, and preservation
Community replacement servers and modified clients can restore some functionality, but they introduce separate copyright, account-security, malware, and platform-policy risks. They may require altered software, expose credentials, or violate a game’s terms. Do not assume that a technically working server is authorized or safe.
Formal preservation is a different activity from ordinary consumer play. A Federal Register rulemaking record from the U.S. Copyright Office discusses preserving games in playable condition when authentication servers are discontinued and distinguishes local gameplay from online services. Its context concerns eligible libraries, archives, and museums; it is not a blanket consumer right to recreate a publisher’s servers or bypass technical protections.
Deciding whether to keep, replace, or preserve the game

Refunds and consumer rights
There is no universal refund rule for a discontinued online game. Eligibility can depend on the platform, country or state, purchase date, product description, and terms in force at the time of sale. A shutdown notice alone does not establish a refund entitlement. Check the platform’s current policy and contact support with your purchase record if the game no longer delivers a feature that was specifically promised.
The practical rule is simple: preserve what is local, verify what is server-dependent, and follow the title’s official schedule. A shutdown can leave a worthwhile offline game, a partial shell with missing content, or a title that no longer functions; only an offline test and the publisher’s exact notice can tell you which case applies.
