First check the outlet, reseat the battery, inspect its accessible contacts, and read the indicator guide for the exact charger model. A recently used battery may need to cool, while a cold one may need to warm gradually within the manufacturer’s permitted charging range. If a charged battery now runs for much less time, it may have deteriorated. Stop using any visibly damaged or abnormal pack, and don’t open or attempt to repair it.

Start with the symptom—and stop if the battery looks abnormal

A battery that will not begin charging, a charger showing an error, and a battery that charges but runs down quickly point to different possible problems. Before troubleshooting, check the pack itself. Do not charge or use one that is cracked, swollen, leaking, deformed, unusually hot, or otherwise abnormal. DEWALT says not to use batteries with visible damage or cracks, and Hilti says damaged packs should be serviced only by the manufacturer or an authorized provider (DEWALT battery safety; Hilti operating instructions). Keep an abnormal pack away from combustible material and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for service and disposal; there is no single emergency procedure established for every type of battery fault.

If the battery won’t charge, check these things in order

  1. Confirm the power source and seating. Check that the outlet works, then remove and fully reseat the battery in the charger. Bosch lists incorrect insertion as a possible reason charging fails (Bosch battery troubleshooting). Don’t force a connection. If the charger stays in an error state after reseating and any power reset described in its manual, stop and arrange authorized charger service.
  2. Check the battery’s temperature. A pack used heavily may be too warm to charge immediately; a cold pack may also be outside its permitted charging conditions. Let it return gradually to a moderate indoor temperature. Don’t apply direct heat or cooling. Charging ranges differ by system: Bosch specifies 0–45°C for the product covered by its instructions, while STIHL specifies 5–40°C for its batteries (Bosch instructions; STIHL charging guidance). Use the exact battery manual rather than treating either range as universal.
  3. Inspect accessible contacts. Look for visible dirt on the battery’s external contacts and the charger contacts. Bosch identifies dirty contacts as a possible cause and advises cleaning according to its product instructions (Bosch troubleshooting). Do not use metal implements, liquids, or solvents unless the manufacturer expressly allows them, and never bridge the terminals.
  4. Read the indicator guide for that charger. Light patterns are not standardized across brands or models. For example, Makita documents a flashing red light as a cooling delay or a battery that is too cold, and flashing red and green as a defective battery for the charger model covered by its FAQ (Makita FAQ). Bosch describes a continuous battery indicator on one product as potentially related to an internal charger error or an out-of-range temperature, among other causes (Bosch troubleshooting). These examples do not decode other chargers; check the model-specific manual.
  5. Isolate a component only with compatible equipment. If you have access to a known-working battery or charger from the same compatible platform, compare them only as the manufacturer permits. Don’t use an unapproved charger or adapter as a diagnostic shortcut. If the error persists, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider; Bosch recommends authorized after-sales service for a recurring charger error (Bosch troubleshooting).

If it charges but won’t hold a charge

Compare runtime under broadly similar conditions: the same tool, task, and workload. Heavy use can drain a pack faster, so a single short run does not by itself establish battery failure. But if a fully charged pack consistently gives substantially less runtime than before, deterioration is possible. Bosch’s instructions say significantly reduced operating time after charging indicates deterioration and that the battery must be replaced (Bosch instructions). Treat that as a useful diagnostic clue for the product covered by the manual, not a universal diagnosis for every battery platform.

A reset, deep discharge, or improvised repair is not an established way to restore lost capacity. If runtime remains poor, ask the manufacturer or an authorized service provider whether the battery needs replacement.

Use the specified battery and charger

Cordless-tool batteries and chargers are platform- and model-specific. Bosch says only the chargers listed in its technical data are matched to its lithium-ion battery; Hilti likewise directs users to recharge a pack only with the specified charger (Bosch product instructions; Hilti operating instructions). Before buying a replacement, verify the tool platform, voltage, battery model, and charger compatibility in the product documentation.

Use a genuine battery or one explicitly approved by the tool manufacturer. Makita warns that non-genuine or altered batteries can interfere with electronic communication and pose fire, injury, or property-damage risks; DEWALT also recommends authentic compatible packs (Makita FAQ; DEWALT battery safety).

When to seek service, replace, or recycle

  • Seek service if an error keeps returning after the manual’s permitted checks, or if the charger appears faulty. Use the manufacturer or an authorized provider for a damaged battery pack.
  • Consider replacement when the battery is confirmed to have deteriorated or no longer holds charge. DEWALT directs users to its service centers for a battery that no longer holds charge and advises against attempting battery repair (DEWALT battery safety).
  • Recycle through an appropriate local option. Makita lists a factory service center or local recycling facility as options for used batteries (Makita FAQ). Service, collection programs, eligibility, and availability vary by country, so check current local instructions before taking a pack anywhere.
