If your scheduled surgeon may be suspended, contact the hospital or surgical team promptly. Confirm whether your operation is still scheduled, who is expected to perform it, and who will coordinate your care if the original surgeon cannot. A suspension does not by itself tell you whether a particular operation is canceled or whether another clinician has been assigned; the effect depends on the order, local rules, and the facility’s arrangements.
What to do first
- Contact the hospital’s surgical office, your surgeon’s office, or the patient coordinator. If you cannot get an answer, ask for the unit handling your procedure or the patient relations office.
- Confirm the operation’s status and timing. Ask whether it remains scheduled, whether the original surgeon is expected to operate, and when the hospital will confirm any change in writing. Do not treat a rumor or calendar appointment as confirmation of either the doctor’s authority or a cancellation.
- Identify who is responsible for your care plan. Get the name and role of your current point of contact, including whom to call after hours and who will monitor your condition if surgery is delayed.
Useful questions to ask include:
- Does the suspension affect the doctor’s ability to practice or their privileges at this facility for my procedure?
- Who is currently planned to perform the operation, and who will participate?
- Should I keep my existing fasting, medication, transport, and pre-operative assessment plans, or will you issue new instructions?
If the hospital proposes another surgeon
Ask for the proposed surgeon’s name, role, relevant qualifications and experience, and what parts of the operation they will perform. Find out whether anyone will supervise or assist them, what—if anything—changes in the procedure or timing, and how the team will obtain your consent.
The American Medical Association’s ethics opinion says patients may accept or refuse a substitute surgeon and should be informed about other clinicians’ participation and asked for informed consent consistent with applicable ethical and legal guidelines. Read the AMA opinion on substitution of surgeon. Its ethics guidance is not a universal statement of local law.
You can ask for time to understand the plan or seek another consultation if you are uncertain. The American College of Surgeons recommends discussing why surgery is indicated, alternatives, the likely outcome without surgery, risks, and expected benefits when considering an operation. If surgery is delayed, transferred, or canceled
Ask your clinician how the proposed delay could affect your medical risk, what alternatives are appropriate, and who will monitor you while arrangements are made. Whether another surgeon or hospital can take over depends on the local system and your specific circumstances.
For example, NSW Health says a public hospital may transfer an elective operation to another NSW hospital or surgeon in specified circumstances, such as when transfer is considered better for the patient, the referring surgeon agrees, or transfer reduces waiting time. That guidance applies to NSW public-patient arrangements, not everywhere. Read NSW Health’s elective-surgery guidance. Safer Care Victoria lists surgeon unavailability among possible reasons for postponing or canceling surgery and advises patients to contact the hospital about concerns or changes; it does not say every suspension automatically cancels an operation. If you decide to change clinicians, ask the hospital how to transfer your test results, imaging, consultation notes, and surgical plan. If the choice involves proceeding with another surgeon versus postponing or transferring care, compare the clinical risk of delay, the new surgeon’s relevant experience and familiarity with your case, continuity of care, facility arrangements, and any insurance, cost, or travel differences. Confirm financial and coverage details with your insurer and facility.
Keep preparation and urgent-care plans clear
Do not change fasting or medication instructions on your own because the plan is uncertain. Contact the pre-operative team and get instructions for the operation that will actually proceed. The NHS explains that preparation instructions can include fasting and medicines, and that the care team should provide guidance for an operation. Read the NHS guide to preparing for surgery.

Ask what symptoms should prompt an urgent call and whom to contact if your condition worsens. For emergency symptoms, use your local emergency number or emergency department. NSW Health lists 000 for emergencies in NSW; readers elsewhere should follow local emergency arrangements.

If the hospital cannot explain the plan, ask for the patient advocate, patient relations office, medical director, or the appropriate health regulator in your jurisdiction. Where relevant, check the doctor’s current registration or license with the official regulator. A registry entry may not explain how a particular suspension affects a specific procedure, so confirm the practical implications with the facility and the regulator.

Suspension is not a uniform term across jurisdictions. It does not, by itself, establish whether the doctor remains licensed, whether their hospital privileges are affected, or whether a substitute has been assigned. For example, the Georgia Composite Medical Board describes how consumers can ask questions about complaints, but its material concerns Georgia and should not be treated as a rule for other locations.
