The clerk can confirm whether your application was processed and whether the ballot was mailed; if it was mailed but never reached you, ask about spoiling it and getting a replacement. Because replacement and in-person options have different deadlines, contact the clerk promptly—especially as Election Day approaches.
1. Check your ballot status and voter information
Open Michigan’s voter information portal and look for the “Absentee ballot” section. The state says voters who requested a mail ballot can track it online.
You can search using your name, birth month and year, and ZIP code, or use your driver’s license number. Check whether the clerk has received your application, whether the ballot was mailed, and whether a returned ballot has been received. If the ballot has not arrived, verify that your registration details and mailing address are current.
Michigan’s Secretary of State recommends checking registration information and address details as Election Day gets closer. If the portal shows an issue or does not answer your question, contact your local clerk rather than assuming a ballot is on its way.

2. Call your city or township clerk
Your local clerk handles absentee ballot applications and ballots. Find the clerk through Michigan.gov/Vote. Ask the clerk:
- Was my absentee ballot application received and approved?
- When was my ballot mailed, and what address was used?
- Has the clerk received a ballot back from me?
- If the ballot was mailed but never arrived, what replacement or in-person option applies to me, and what is its deadline?
Confirm the deadline and any required steps directly with the clerk. Rules differ depending on whether you are asking to spoil an unsubmitted ballot, submitting an absentee application in person, or using an in-person voting option.

3. If the ballot was mailed, ask about a replacement
Michigan guidance says that if you never received, lost, or destroyed an absentee ballot, you can ask the clerk to “spoil” the original ballot and issue a new one. The replacement is handled by your local clerk. Do not try to use both ballots; ask the clerk how to complete the replacement process for your situation.
For an unsubmitted ballot, the state’s published first-time voter guidance says a written, signed request to spoil the ballot must be received in person by the clerk by 4 p.m. on the Monday before Election Day. Contact your clerk immediately to confirm that this procedure applies to you and whether any additional steps are needed.

4. If time is short, ask about in-person options
Michigan’s general absentee voting guidance says a currently registered voter may submit an absentee ballot application in person at the clerk’s office until 4 p.m. the day before Election Day. That is a separate procedure from asking the clerk to spoil an unsubmitted ballot and issue a replacement, which has the Monday-before-Election-Day cutoff described above.
Depending on your registration and address status, an in-person option may be more practical than waiting for another ballot by mail. Call the clerk before going to confirm which route applies, the deadline, office hours, and what identification or documents to bring. Do not assume that the application cutoff and replacement-ballot cutoff are interchangeable.

5. If the ballot arrives, return it promptly
For most Michigan absentee voters, the completed ballot must reach the local clerk by 8 p.m. on Election Day to count. The state advises mailing a ballot at least two weeks before Election Day to reduce the risk of postal delay; if less time remains, ask your clerk about an appropriate return method instead of relying on mail. Military and overseas voters follow a separate postmark and receipt rule, so use Michigan’s specialized guidance for those ballots.
