If you think your MetaMask wallet or browser extension has been compromised, stop interacting with suspicious sites, protect your recovery phrase, and use a trusted device or clean browser profile to create a new wallet and move any assets that remain. If a device may be infected, do not enter a new recovery phrase on it until it has been checked and cleaned. Do not add gas to a wallet if a sweeper script may immediately take it.
The right response depends on what was exposed: a Secret Recovery Phrase, an individual private key, a token approval, a fake extension, or the device itself. The steps below help you separate those cases without putting new credentials at risk.
Take these steps first
- Stop using the suspicious page or extension. Do not enter or send your Secret Recovery Phrase (SRP) or a private key. MetaMask says it will never ask for your SRP; do not give it to a site, support agent, or recovery service.
- Switch to a trusted environment. If the browser or device may be compromised, use another trusted device or a clean browser profile. Do not type a fresh SRP into a device you do not trust. If a Google or Apple account connected to MetaMask may also be compromised, MetaMask cautions against connecting that same account to the new wallet.
- Create a new wallet and protect its recovery phrase. Keep the new SRP private and back it up securely. Anyone who obtains it can control every account derived from it.
- Move remaining assets if you can do so safely. Transfer them from the affected wallet to the new wallet. If a sweeper script may be monitoring the wallet, do not send it extra funds for gas: the added funds may be taken as well. MetaMask’s hacked-or-scammed guidance discusses this situation.
- Stop using affected accounts. After moving what remains, retire the compromised wallet and every account derived from an exposed SRP. Changing the wallet’s local password or resetting the extension does not make a disclosed SRP safe.
If you cannot safely move the remaining assets, avoid experimenting with the affected wallet. MetaMask cannot intervene to rescue funds; preserve the relevant details and report the incident as described below.
Identify what may have been exposed
An SRP, a private key, a token approval, and access to a browser or device are different risks. Use this comparison to choose the appropriate response. MetaMask says completed transactions cannot be reversed, regardless of which type of compromise occurred.

Clean up the browser or device before trusting it again
MetaMask advises reviewing browser history and scanning a computer when investigating a compromise. Google Account Help recommends removing untrusted Chrome extensions, resetting browser settings, updating the operating system, and checking account security. If signs of malware persist, seek help from the device vendor. Do not enter a replacement wallet’s SRP on the suspect device until you have reason to trust it again.
If you need to reinstall or update MetaMask, use its official download route or an official browser extension store. A reinstall can replace an extension, but it cannot undo a theft or secure an SRP that has already been disclosed.

Revoke an approval; do not confuse it with disconnecting a site
A dapp connection and a token allowance are not the same thing. Disconnecting a site does not revoke a token approval. If an allowance is suspicious or unnecessary, review it for the relevant network and revoke it from a trusted environment. MetaMask’s approval guidance notes that revocation is an on-chain transaction and requires gas. It cannot retrieve tokens already taken.
Report the incident safely
Report the scam or unauthorized activity to the relevant authorities and use MetaMask’s official support route. Keep transaction hashes, the approximate time of the incident, and other relevant records available for the report. MetaMask says it cannot restore missing funds or reverse transactions, so be wary of anyone claiming they can recover funds for a fee.

Do not call a number or message a social account that claims to be MetaMask support. MetaMask says it has no support phone number, and legitimate support will not ask for your SRP.

Keep recovery credentials private and store them securely. For high-value assets, MetaMask suggests considering a hardware wallet, which stores private keys offline. That can help with future custody, but it does not repair an already exposed SRP or make a compromised account safe; handle the incident and move remaining assets first.
