Put safety first, then check whether your home has power and whether your internet provider reports an outage. A battery backup can keep your modem and router running only if the provider’s network is still working; a phone hotspot is an option only if cellular service and your plan allow it.

What to do first

  1. Check for immediate hazards. Stay away from downed power lines, flooded areas, and wet or visibly damaged equipment. Do not go outside in dangerous weather to inspect cables. Southern California Edison advises staying at least 100 feet from a downed line and calling 911 from a safe place; follow your local utility and emergency instructions. Southern California Edison outage tips.
  2. Check the power in your home. If electricity is out, an ordinary modem and router will stop unless they have backup power. If the equipment is wet or damaged, do not touch or move it.
  3. Check your provider’s outage status using a charged phone. Look at its outage map, app, or status channel. Even with power at home, the neighborhood network may be unpowered or damaged. A lit router or visible Wi-Fi network does not prove that the provider’s connection to the internet is available.
  4. Avoid repeated reboots during an area outage. Follow the provider’s current instructions rather than repeatedly unplugging equipment. Xfinity says both home and local network power must be restored before its technicians can begin service restoration; its advice is specific to Xfinity, not a universal repair timetable. Xfinity weather-event FAQs.
  5. Choose a fallback if you need to connect. If cellular service is working, a phone hotspot may help with essential devices. Check your carrier’s hotspot eligibility, data limits, and charges first.

Storm restoration times depend on the damage and location. Xfinity notes that in severely affected areas it may not be able to assess damage or estimate restoration until the storm has passed; that guidance does not establish a timetable for other providers.

Why your internet may be down even when Wi-Fi is on

Your home Wi-Fi is the wireless link between your devices and router. Internet access also depends on the modem and the provider’s network beyond your home. A power cut can stop equipment inside the house, while outages, flooding, or fallen trees can disrupt provider infrastructure. Restoring power to your router alone cannot repair a damaged or unpowered outside network.

Ireland’s communications regulator, ComReg, makes the same condition explicit in its advice: a modem-and-router battery backup can help during a home power outage only if the broadband network itself remains powered. ComReg’s severe-weather battery-backup guidance.

When to restart your modem and router

Wait until household power is stable and your provider indicates that local service is available. If the connection still does not return, follow your provider’s restart instructions. Xfinity’s manual sequence is to disconnect modem/router power, wait five seconds, then reconnect it. Other providers may give different directions.

Xfinity also advises unplugging equipment during a weather-related outage as a precaution against a potentially damaging surge when power returns, then reconnecting it once power is restored. Follow your provider’s guidance and do not handle equipment that is wet or visibly damaged. Xfinity weather-event FAQs.

Which backup option fits the outage?

Option Can help when Limit to consider
Modem/router battery backup or UPS Home electricity is out but the provider’s network is still online. It cannot fix a provider-side outage. Runtime and device compatibility vary; check equipment power requirements and the backup’s specifications.
Phone hotspot Cellular service works and your plan permits tethering. Coverage, data limits or charges, and phone battery can constrain use. Cellular infrastructure can also be affected by a storm.
Dedicated hotspot You have a separate cellular device and a suitable plan. It still depends on cellular coverage and power. Program and pricing details vary.
Temporary Wi-Fi or a loaned hotspot A nearby site or lending program is open and accessible. Availability may change during severe weather. Confirm before traveling, and do not make a hazardous trip for connectivity.
Battery-powered or crank radio Internet and possibly cellular service are unavailable, but you need local information. It provides updates, not internet access.

Use a UPS for the equipment it can actually support

A UPS can temporarily power a modem and router during a household outage, but only if the broadband network outside the home continues to operate. Before choosing one, check the devices’ power requirements, how they connect to the battery, and the runtime you need. There is no universal runtime established for all home networking equipment and battery backups.

Use cellular data selectively

A hotspot is a fallback for fixed-broadband failure, not a guarantee of service during a storm. Xfinity warns that hotspot data counts toward the billing cycle; Southern California Edison likewise advises checking with your mobile provider about additional charges. Confirm your own plan terms before relying on tethering. Xfinity weather-event FAQs and Southern California Edison outage tips.

Check temporary access before leaving home

A family member’s connection, a library, school, workplace, or community facility may offer Wi-Fi or a loaned hotspot. Availability and opening hours are local and can change during severe weather, so confirm first and consider road and weather conditions. Southern California Edison suggests checking local facilities and loan options; it does not establish that any particular site or device will be available during a given storm. Southern California Edison outage tips.

Prepare for the next storm

  • Charge phones and backup batteries before severe weather when possible. If a phone cannot be recharged, use battery-saving settings and limit nonessential use.
  • Keep a battery-powered or crank radio so you can receive local information if internet and cellular access fail.
  • Plan separately for medical, accessibility, or alert devices that depend on power or internet. Government of Canada preparedness guidance recommends discussing outage needs with medical professionals and checking whether a medical alert system will work during a power failure. Government of Canada power-outage preparedness guidance.
  • If you use a generator, operate it outdoors and at least 20 feet from windows, doors, and vents, as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises. Never run one indoors, in a basement or garage, or near openings. Use a battery-backed or battery-powered carbon monoxide detector. CDC power-outage safety guidance.
  • Never plug a generator into a wall outlet. Government of Canada guidance says household wiring requires a properly installed, approved transfer panel and switch. Follow generator instructions and local safety advice. Government of Canada power-outage preparedness guidance.
