If your Core i9-14900K started crashing after a BIOS update, first verify that the BIOS is for your exact motherboard model and revision, then check with the board maker that it includes Intel microcode 0x12F or later. Load the relevant Intel Default Settings. If the crashes continue, test temperatures, memory, power, motherboard, and Windows systematically. The timing alone does not prove the BIOS update or CPU caused the problem.

Start by recording what changed

Before changing settings again, write down the motherboard model and revision, BIOS version and release date, and whether the update completed normally. Also note your memory configuration and settings, CPU temperatures, and what the crashes look like: for example, whether they happen during startup, at idle, or under a particular workload, and whether you see a blue screen, freeze, reboot, or application failure.

This record helps distinguish a firmware problem from instability that happens to appear after the update. Intel’s random-crash troubleshooting guidance lists several possible causes, including overheating, memory, power supply, motherboard, operating system, and CPU—not just BIOS.

Verify the BIOS and apply Intel’s current guidance

Confirm the BIOS matches your exact board

Go to the support page for the precise motherboard model and hardware revision. Use that manufacturer’s BIOS file and instructions; BIOS files and flash procedures are board-specific. Intel says 600- and 700-series chipset motherboards need BIOS updates for 13th- and 14th-generation processor support, and directs users to their motherboard manufacturer for the correct file and details. On applicable ASUS systems, Intel notes that an ME firmware update may be required before updating the BIOS. Check the board maker’s instructions rather than assuming the same sequence applies to every board.

Intel® Core™ i9-14900K Desktop Processor
  • Game without compromise. Play harder and work smarter with Intel Core 14th Gen processors
  • 24 cores (8 P-cores plus 16 E-cores) and 32 threads. Integrated Intel UHD Graphics 770 included
  • Leading max clock speed of up to 6.0 GHz gives you smoother game play, higher frame rates, and rapid responsiveness
  • Compatible with Intel 600-series (with potential BIOS update) or 700-series chipset-based motherboards
  • DDR4 and DDR5 platform support cuts your load times and gives you the space to run the most demanding games

If you are unsure whether the correct file was installed, or whether the update sequence had a prerequisite, ask the manufacturer’s support team before attempting another flash. Follow its board-specific recovery instructions if it identifies a firmware problem.

Check for microcode 0x12F or later and load Intel Default Settings

For affected 13th- and 14th-generation desktop processors, Intel’s latest-information article, last reviewed July 21, 2026, recommends the latest BIOS containing microcode 0x12F or later and Intel Default Settings. Check the motherboard maker’s release notes or ask its support team to confirm the microcode included in your installed BIOS. A BIOS release date by itself does not establish which microcode it contains.

Intel Core i9-14900 Desktop Processor 24 cores (8 P-cores + 16 E-cores) up to 5.8 GHz
  • 24 cores (8 P-cores + 16 E-cores) and 32 threads. Integrated Intel UHD Graphics 770 included.
  • Performance hybrid architecture integrates two core microarchitectures, prioritizing and distributing workloads to optimize performance
  • Up to 5.8 GHz unlocked. 36MB Cache
  • Compatible with Intel 600-series (with potential BIOS update) and 700-series chipset-based motherboards
  • Turbo Boost Max Technology 3.0 Frequency, and PCIe 5.0 & 4.0 support. DDR4 and DDR5 Memory support. RH1 thermal solution included.

After confirming the appropriate firmware, load the Intel Default Settings profile available for your motherboard and processor. Use the manufacturer’s instructions for finding and applying the setting; menu names and locations vary by board. Do not treat this step as a guarantee that every crash will stop or that any prior processor damage has been reversed. Intel’s guidance is a mitigation recommendation, not a diagnosis of an individual system.

If crashes continue, isolate the hardware and software

Change one factor at a time where practical and record the result. That makes the tests more useful than replacing parts based on timing alone.

Check cooling and temperatures

Confirm that the cooler is compatible with the processor and properly mounted, and check CPU temperatures during the workload that typically triggers the crash. A loose or inadequate cooling setup can cause instability; record the observed temperatures and when they occur rather than relying on a single idle reading.

Test memory and a minimal configuration

Intel’s checklist recommends reducing the system to a minimal configuration: motherboard, CPU, power supply, and one DRAM module. Reseat the memory, then test one module at a time or try alternate memory if available. Note whether the crash behavior changes with a different module or configuration.

Check the power supply and motherboard

Verify that the PSU is suitable for the system and its connections are secure. If you can, test with another known-good PSU or motherboard, changing only one component at a time. If instability follows a board or changes when the board is substituted, contact the motherboard maker; do not assume a CPU replacement is the answer without supporting test results.

Separate Windows problems from hardware problems

Intel lists a fresh operating-system image as an isolation step. Back up important data before reinstalling or testing another OS image, and use a clean installation only when you can do so safely. Intel also lists the Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool for Windows CPU burn-in testing. A diagnostic result can inform troubleshooting, but it should be considered alongside the crash pattern and other component tests.

What you find Next action What it helps establish
Crashes began after the flash, and previous settings may have been retained Load the relevant Intel Default Settings and confirm with the board maker that the BIOS includes microcode 0x12F or later. Whether the recommended firmware and settings are in place.
The BIOS version or update sequence is uncertain Check the support page for the exact motherboard model and revision; ask the manufacturer about prerequisites and recovery. Whether the installed firmware and update procedure match the board.
Crashes persist at default settings Check temperatures, test one memory module in a minimal configuration, assess the PSU, and isolate the motherboard and operating system where possible. Whether the failure changes with cooling, memory, power, board, or OS conditions.
Instability remains after component isolation Contact the motherboard maker about firmware and board support, and contact Intel for processor diagnosis and warranty eligibility. Whether the CPU or another component needs further service.

Contact support with a useful record

When you contact the motherboard manufacturer or Intel, provide the motherboard model and revision, BIOS version and date, memory configuration, settings used, temperature observations, crash symptoms, and the results of each isolation test. Ask the board maker to clarify firmware compatibility, prerequisites, and recovery options. Ask Intel to assess the processor and confirm whether it qualifies for warranty coverage.

Intel says eligible affected processors receive a two-year warranty extension, for coverage up to five years from the original purchase. Eligibility must be confirmed with Intel; the extension does not mean every unstable system or every crash is a covered processor defect. See Intel’s current guidance for affected processors for the applicable details.
