Then review your Google Account security. If the APK was an unofficial WhatsApp mod, switch to the official app and register your number again; chat-history transfer is not guaranteed. If suspicious behavior continues after cleanup, contact your phone’s manufacturer or consider a factory reset.
1. Stop using the APK
Don’t open the app again or grant it additional permissions. If you saw a Google warning such as “This app is fake…”, the APK may be an unofficial WhatsApp build. WhatsApp says it does not support modified third-party apps because they can put your privacy and security at risk.
2. Run Google Play Protect
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile icon, then Play Protect.
- Run or review the scan, and make sure app scanning is enabled.
Play Protect includes protections for apps installed outside Google Play and may warn about, block, disable, or remove an app it considers harmful or suspicious. A scan is one part of cleanup, not proof that a device is risk-free. See Google Play Protect’s safety guidance and Google’s description of on-device protections.
3. Uninstall the suspicious app
If Play Protect offers an uninstall action, use it. Otherwise, open Android Settings > Apps, find the suspicious app, and uninstall it. The exact menu names vary by phone and Android version. Google recommends removing apps you don’t trust or no longer need; its Android malware and unsafe-software guidance explains the broader cleanup steps.

4. Install Android and security updates
Check for Android software updates, security updates, and Google Play system updates. Depending on your device, update controls may be under Settings > System or Settings > Security & privacy. Menu labels differ across manufacturers and versions.
5. Review account security
Use Google’s Security Checkup and address any issues it lists. If you entered a password for another account into the APK, or into a page it opened, change that password from a device you consider safe and review that account’s active sign-ins.

6. Reinstall official WhatsApp if the APK was a clone or mod
Uninstall the unofficial app, download WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business from WhatsApp’s official download page, and register your phone number again. WhatsApp says it “can’t guarantee that your chat history will transfer because WhatsApp doesn’t support unofficial apps.” Don’t assume chats from a modified app can be recovered.

If pop-ups, unexpected behavior, or other signs persist after you remove the app and update the phone, Google says a factory reset may be needed; you can also ask the phone manufacturer for help. A reset is an escalation, not an automatic first step or a guaranteed fix. Review Google’s removal and recovery guidance before proceeding.
