If you’ve just joined a Wi-Fi network you don’t trust, disconnect from it and forget the network so your device won’t automatically rejoin. Then focus on what you did while connected: simply loading ordinary websites is different from entering a password, payment details, or installing an app or profile. Joining a questionable hotspot alone does not prove your device or accounts were compromised.
1. Disconnect and forget the network
Turn off Wi-Fi or switch to a trusted connection, such as cellular data. Remove the network from your saved list as well; otherwise, your device may reconnect automatically.
On Android
- Open your device’s Wi-Fi or network settings and select the connected network to disconnect.
- Open the network’s details and choose Forget to remove it from saved networks. Menu names and locations vary by Android version and device manufacturer. See Google’s Android instructions for connecting to and managing Wi-Fi networks.
On iPhone, Windows, or Mac
Use your device maker’s current instructions to disconnect and remove the network from saved networks. The precise controls differ across operating-system versions, so avoid relying on a menu path that may not match your device.
2. Work out what happened while you were connected
Before taking further action, recall what you did on the network. The next steps depend more on what you entered or installed than on the connection alone.

#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Only browsed ordinary websites: If you did not enter sensitive details or install anything, disconnecting and forgetting the network may be all you need to do right now.
- Signed in or entered a password: Consider whether the page was genuine. A familiar-looking login page can be fake.
- Entered payment or identity information: Contact the relevant bank, card issuer, or service using its official app or phone number.
- Installed an app, profile, certificate, or configuration: Treat that as a separate reason to investigate the device and follow its maker’s security guidance.
- Noticed unexpected prompts or account activity: Review the affected account’s recent activity and follow its security steps.
The Federal Trade Commission says, “Because of the widespread use of encryption, connecting through a public Wi-Fi network is usually safe.” That is general guidance, not a guarantee about a particular hotspot. Encryption protects data traveling between your device and a website, but it does not prove the website is legitimate: scammers can also use encrypted fake websites. Read the FTC’s public Wi-Fi safety guidance for context.
3. Secure credentials or financial details you submitted
If you entered a password on a suspicious page
- From a trusted device and connection, change the password for the affected account.
- If you reused that password elsewhere, change it on those accounts too. Use a different password for each one.
- Turn on two-factor authentication where the service offers it.
- Review recent sign-ins or account activity using the service’s official app or website, and follow any security prompts.
CISA advises changing passwords for services associated with a mobile device from a different computer you control if accounts were compromised while traveling. See its guidance for traveling with internet-enabled devices. The FTC also recommends strong, unique passwords and two-factor authentication in its public Wi-Fi security tips.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
If you entered payment or identity details
Contact the bank, card issuer, or affected service directly through its official app or the number on your card or statement. Explain what information you submitted and follow its instructions for monitoring, securing, or replacing the account or card. Don’t use contact details from a page you now suspect was fraudulent.
4. Check the device if you installed something or see warning signs
Install available operating-system and app updates. A Wi-Fi connection by itself does not establish that malware was installed, so a factory reset is not an automatic response to joining a questionable network.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
If you installed an app you don’t trust or have concrete signs of a device problem, follow the security guidance for your device. For Android, Google recommends removing untrusted apps and checking device security. If signs of malware persist, Google advises getting help from the device manufacturer or considering a reset. Follow Google’s Android guidance for removing malware or unsafe software.

- Use cellular data or a personal hotspot for sensitive activity when you can. CISA says cellular service is generally more secure than public Wi-Fi and advises avoiding sensitive activity on public networks; these are precautions, not proof that every public hotspot is unsafe.
- Keep your device and apps updated, use unique passwords, and enable two-factor authentication where available.
- Check that a login page belongs to the service you intend to use. HTTPS encrypts the connection to a site but does not confirm that the site is honest.
