If you only opened a suspicious link and entered nothing, close the page and do not use the link again. If you submitted a Free password or security code, change the password promptly. If you shared bank details, contact your bank immediately through a trusted channel. If your phone suddenly loses service for no clear reason, contact Free urgently because a SIM swap may be involved.

First, work out what was exposed

The right response depends on what you did after opening the message. A click alone is different from handing over a password, payment information, or a one-time code.

  • Opened the link, entered nothing: close the page and do not proceed.
  • Entered a Free password or security code: change the password and check the account.
  • Entered bank or card details: contact your bank immediately.
  • Lost mobile service unexpectedly: contact Free urgently and alert your bank.

Keep the original email or text message, screenshots, and any transaction details. They may help Free, your bank, or the authorities understand what happened.

If you only clicked the link

Close the page. Do not enter credentials, payment information, or security codes. You can inspect the address shown in the browser, but do not revisit the page through the message. Cybermalveillance.gouv.fr advises checking whether the displayed address exactly matches the legitimate service; if it does not, do not provide information. Read its phishing guidance.

If you downloaded a file, installed an app or profile, or granted device permissions, the steps for a simple click may not be enough to assess the device. Use 17Cyber for guided incident diagnosis.

If you entered your Free password or a security code

  1. Open the Free Mobile account page using a known address or bookmark, not the message link.
  2. Change the affected account password promptly.
  3. Change it on every other service where you reused it. Use a different password for each service.
  4. Review the Free account for changes or access you do not recognise.
  5. If you cannot access the account or see changes you did not make, contact Free by calling 3244 yourself or using another official route.

Free says account passwords, banking details, and unique security codes are strictly confidential. Its current guidance describes an additional authentication step using a six-digit code sent by SMS or email; that code is not safe to disclose to someone who contacts you. If a caller claims to be from 3244 and the call seems suspicious, hang up and dial 3244 yourself. Free’s security guidance and Cybermalveillance.gouv.fr’s phishing advice both recommend changing compromised passwords, including any reused elsewhere.

If you entered bank or payment details

  1. Contact your bank immediately using its known app or a trusted phone number—not a number or link in the suspicious message.
  2. Explain what information you shared and follow the bank’s instructions for protecting the particular card or account.
  3. Check recent transactions. If you see unauthorised card activity, Cybermalveillance.gouv.fr advises opposing the payment method; it also identifies Perceval for reporting fraudulent card transactions.
  4. Keep relevant messages, screenshots, and transaction details.

Reimbursement is not automatic in every circumstance, so ask the bank about your case rather than assuming the money will be returned. The same official phishing guidance covers these steps: Cybermalveillance.gouv.fr.

If your phone suddenly loses service

An unexplained, continuing loss of service, a disabled or absent SIM, or a display such as “no service” or “emergency calls only” needs urgent attention. Free advises affected subscribers to contact it at 3244 or visit a Free shop, alert their bank, and change passwords for important accounts. Call 3244 yourself rather than trusting an incoming caller’s displayed number.

A SIM swap occurs when an attacker persuades an operator to move a phone number to another SIM. ENISA explains that, after a successful takeover, the attacker may receive calls and texts intended for the subscriber, including security codes. That can put accounts relying on SMS verification at risk. ENISA’s report on countering SIM swapping describes the threat; it does not establish how common such incidents currently are among Free subscribers.

How to check whether a Free message is genuine

Free lists freemobile@free-mobile.fr as its mobile subscriber email address. It says its SMS messages are never sent from a number beginning with 06 or 07, and that SMS links it sends begin with m.free.fr. These are useful clues, not proof: do not trust a sender name or displayed number by itself. When uncertain, navigate to Free directly and check “Communications de Free” in the subscriber area.

Reduce the risk of a repeat

  • Use a distinct password for every account; a password manager can help you keep them separate.
  • Where a sensitive account supports it, consider an authentication method that does not rely on your phone number. ENISA recommends avoiding phone-number reliance when other methods are available; this does not mean a security key replaces Free Mobile account authentication.
  • Never give a caller or message sender a one-time security code, even if they claim to be Free or your bank.
