If the iPhone Duo’s inner display layer is scratched, bubbling, or lifting, don’t treat it like an ordinary screen protector: don’t peel it, press it flat, cut it, heat it, or cover it with another film. Contact Apple Support or an Apple-authorized service provider for an assessment. Apple has said the inner cover layer is replaceable, but the available guidance does not establish that owners should remove it themselves or explain how to tell surface wear from damage to the display underneath.
First, identify which display is affected
The iPhone Duo has an inner folding display and a separate outer display. Apple describes the inner screen as a multi-layer design with a custom-polymer, nano-textured cover layer. Apple says the finish reduces glare and minimizes crease visibility; MacRumors also reports that the layer has a scratch-resistant coating. When you contact support, say whether the issue is on the inner folding screen or the outer display, and describe what you see—for example, a scratch, a bubble, or an edge that appears to be lifting. A visible mark alone does not establish whether only the cover layer is affected or whether the underlying display is damaged.
What to do about bubbling or a lifting edge
Do not try to remove or reseat the layer yourself based only on the fact that Apple says it can be replaced. The executive statement confirms replaceability, not a do-it-yourself procedure. The available reporting does not establish whether pressing, cutting, heating, cleaning, or applying another film is safe, or what official steps Apple recommends for bubbling or lifting.

- Note which display is affected and where the scratch, bubble, or lifted area appears.
- Contact Apple Support or an Apple-authorized service provider and ask for an assessment of the inner cover layer and display.
Do not assume that a generic film sold for flat screens is a suitable replacement for the iPhone Duo’s inner cover layer. The sources cited here do not establish a compatible consumer replacement product or procedure.
Can the inner cover layer be replaced?
Yes. Kate Bergeron, Apple’s vice president of hardware engineering, said the layer is replaceable: “It’s actually replaceable, which is a really nice thing for the customer that you can peel off that layer and get a new one,” as quoted by MacRumors on October 1, 2026. That statement does not say that customers should perform the removal themselves; ask Apple or an authorized provider about service for your device.

MacRumors reported a $19 service fee for cover-layer replacement for customers with AppleCare+ in the United States. The report did not disclose the price without coverage.
