Treat the output as a question to discuss, not a diagnosis to follow. Don’t change prescribed treatment solely because a chatbot disagrees, and don’t use one to decide what to do in an emergency.
What to do when an AI answer and your clinician disagree
- Save the exact answer. Keep the chatbot response, the question you asked and, if relevant, the information you entered. A copied answer is not a medical record, and you should not assume the chatbot retained your clinical history.
- Ask your clinician to explain the difference. You could say: “I asked an AI tool about this, and it suggested something different from what we discussed. Can you explain why your assessment fits my situation and what information would change the plan?” Ask what evidence supports the assessment, what remains uncertain, what to watch for and when to follow up.
- Bring relevant context. Share the specific AI claim, your symptoms and when they began, recent test results, and a current medication list. Your clinician can determine which details matter. AMA ethics guidance says AI output should be considered alongside clinical context and the patient’s needs and values (American Medical Association, September 14, 2026).
- Clarify the plan before you leave. Make sure you understand what to do next, what would prompt follow-up and whom to contact with questions. Do not start, stop or change a prescribed treatment solely on the basis of an AI response; ask the prescriber or another qualified clinician how to proceed.
- Ask about another clinical review if the issue is still unresolved. You can ask whether a second opinion is appropriate and how to arrange one. If you pursue it, consider the reviewer’s relevant specialty and qualifications, access to your records and tests, timing, and cost or insurance coverage.
Why a confident AI answer can still be wrong
Fluent wording and apparent certainty do not establish that an answer is correct. The World Health Organization warns that large language models can produce plausible responses that are completely wrong or contain serious health errors. It also identifies risks from bias in training data and exposure of sensitive information supplied by users (WHO, May 16, 2023).
A general-purpose chatbot may not have the patient-specific context needed to assess an individual. The clinician can interpret the AI claim against the person’s circumstances; the chatbot’s output alone cannot settle which assessment is right.
“AI diagnosis” can also refer to different kinds of tools. WHO describes large multimodal models as generative systems that can accept multiple types of input and produce varied outputs, while noting that broad general-purpose capability has not been proven (WHO, March 25, 2025). A tool’s label does not establish that it has been evaluated for your condition.

What AI guidance and regulation do—and don’t—establish
The AMA’s ethics guidance says AI should augment, not replace, clinical decision-making or a physician’s ethical responsibility. Its guidance also emphasizes evaluating AI output using clinical context and patient-specific needs and values (AMA, September 14, 2026).
FDA guidance on clinical decision-support software addresses how certain functions are assessed under U.S. device law. Its criteria for clinician-support functions include that software should not replace or direct a health professional’s judgment; patient- or caregiver-intended functions do not meet that specific clinician-support criterion (FDA, “Step 6: Is the Software Function Intended to Provide Clinical Decision Support?”). This is not a consumer test of whether a particular chatbot answer is accurate, nor does it establish that all health AI is unregulated or unsafe.

Protect your privacy when sharing health details
Be cautious about entering personal health information into a chatbot. AMA and WHO guidance both identify privacy concerns around sensitive information shared with AI systems (AMA, May 20, 2026; WHO, May 16, 2023). If you have already used one, focus your clinician conversation on the output and information relevant to your care; do not assume that the service handled your data as a medical record.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to seek urgent care
For a medical emergency or a rapidly worsening situation, contact local emergency services or seek urgent medical care rather than asking a chatbot to decide what to do. The AMA’s patient guidance explicitly says AI chatbots are not for medical emergencies (AMA, May 20, 2026).
