Don’t act on consequential chatbot advice until you’ve checked it. Verify the claim with a reliable primary source, involve a qualified person when health, legal, financial, or safety decisions are involved, and report the answer to the chatbot provider. If you already sent money or disclosed sensitive information, contact the relevant bank, service, or institution directly and begin its recovery process.

First, pause and identify what could be harmed

A fluent, confident answer can still be wrong. OpenAI says ChatGPT may produce incorrect or misleading information, including fabricated quotes, studies, citations, and references. Confidence is not proof. Treat a consequential answer as an unverified claim, not as an instruction to follow. OpenAI’s guidance on ChatGPT accuracy recommends using it as a first draft rather than a final source.

Work out whether the answer concerns a factual detail, professional advice, a suspicious request, or a customer-service problem. The right response depends on the stakes and whether you have already acted.

  • Immediate danger or a potentially time-critical health problem: contact local emergency services or a qualified clinician instead of asking a chatbot to assess the emergency.
  • Medical, legal, financial, or other professional decision: hold off and consult a qualified professional or the institution responsible for the matter.
  • Payment, account, or identity exposure: contact the relevant provider or institution through a trusted channel promptly.
  • Low-stakes factual claim: verify it before relying on it or sharing it.

Verify the claim at its source

Isolate the specific claim that could affect your decision. Check it against the organization or document that owns the information: a government agency or regulator, the relevant institution’s official site, the original study or document, or a qualified professional. A citation in a chatbot response is only a lead to inspect. Open it, confirm that it exists, and check that it supports the exact claim; a chatbot can fabricate a reference or mischaracterize a real source. OpenAI advises checking important information and visiting cited sources directly.

Do not treat asking the same chatbot to double-check itself as independent verification. If the answer involves a suspicious message, payment request, or link, do not use contact details in that message. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises contacting the person or organization using a website or phone number you already know is trustworthy, and resisting pressure to act immediately. See the FTC’s guidance on avoiding scams.

Get qualified help when the stakes are professional

Bring the question and the chatbot’s answer to a person qualified to handle the actual decision, such as a clinician, lawyer, financial professional, or the responsible institution. Google’s Gemini guidance says not to rely on its responses as medical, legal, financial, or other professional advice; that warning is specific to Gemini, but it underscores why a chatbot answer should not replace a qualified adviser. Read Google’s Gemini Apps guidance.

If a financial institution’s chatbot cannot resolve an account, payment, debt, or rights issue, contact the institution through a known channel and ask for human assistance. In its analysis of consumer finance, the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau describes repetitive automated exchanges that leave people without meaningful help; that finding is not a claim that every chatbot behaves this way. Read the CFPB report on chatbots in consumer finance.

Report the inaccurate or unsafe answer

Reporting can flag a response for the provider, but it does not verify the claim or undo harm. The documented routes below are for these products; other chatbot providers may have different controls, and interfaces can change.

ChatGPT

  1. Tap or click the thumbs-down control under the response on web or mobile.
  2. Select an issue, choose “Safety or Legal concern,” and follow the prompts.

OpenAI also provides a content-reporting webform. Consult the current help page if the controls or labels differ.

Gemini

Use the thumbs-down feedback control on the inaccurate or unsafe answer and submit feedback. Google identifies feedback as a way to report inaccurate responses; see its Gemini Apps Help guidance for current details.

If money or personal information is already exposed

Deal with the exposure directly rather than waiting for the chatbot provider to respond. For a suspected scam, stop sending money and contact the relevant bank, card issuer, payment app, wire-transfer company, or other payment provider promptly. Ask whether the payment can be stopped, reversed, or refunded. The FTC notes that recovery may be difficult and depends on the payment method and circumstances; do not assume the money can be recovered.

If you are in the United States, you can report a scam to ReportFraud.ftc.gov; the FTC also explains how to respond if you were scammed. If you disclosed account credentials or identity details, contact the affected institution through a trusted channel and follow its account-security or identity-recovery steps. Outside the United States, use your country’s consumer-protection and fraud-reporting agencies.

Keep the provider-specific limits in mind

OpenAI and Google describe limitations and feedback routes for their own products. Google also says Gemini responses do not represent Google’s views and should not be attributed to Google; that attribution statement applies to Gemini, not automatically to other chatbots. There is no single reporting route or recovery remedy established here for every chatbot or every kind of harm.
