If your blood sugar rises after a snack, first confirm the reading and compare it with your personal target. Drink water, take medication only as prescribed, and follow your clinician-approved plan. A single high reading is not a reason to take an extra dose or permanently avoid a food; if the level stays high or you develop concerning symptoms, contact your healthcare team.
What to do right now
- Confirm the reading. If you use a blood glucose meter, check as you normally would. If you use a continuous glucose monitor (CGM), consider its trend and your care plan. A CGM measures glucose in interstitial fluid rather than directly in blood, so it can lag a finger-stick reading by about 5–15 minutes, according to the American Diabetes Association (ADA).
- Compare it with your own target. A high blood sugar reading means a value above your individual target; targets vary. The ADA advises: “If you think your blood glucose is high, start by checking it to be sure.” See its hyperglycemia guidance.
- Drink water and take medicine as prescribed. Do not skip a prescribed dose, but do not add medication or give yourself an insulin correction unless that action is part of your clinician-approved plan. The ADA recommends drinking water to stay hydrated and taking medications as prescribed in its guidance on high blood glucose.
- Record the details. Note the reading and time, what and how much you ate, medication timing, activity, and relevant circumstances such as stress, hydration, sleep, or illness. These details can help you and your care team interpret a reading.
- Contact your healthcare team if the high persists or you feel unwell. Follow your personal care plan for when to call. Nausea, vomiting, confusion, shortness of breath, fruity-smelling breath, or a very dry mouth can be signs of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a life-threatening condition that needs immediate treatment. Seek urgent medical help for these symptoms; see the ADA’s DKA information.
This is general education, not an individualized insulin or medication correction plan.
How to interpret a high reading after a snack
For many nonpregnant adults with diabetes, the ADA lists a general target of less than 180 mg/dL 1–2 hours after the beginning of a meal. That is a meal-related guide, not a snack-specific cutoff, and your own goal may differ. The ADA’s 2026 guide for people with type 2 diabetes also gives this general post-meal target and notes that goals may be adjusted for age, health conditions, or risk of low blood glucose. Ask your clinician which target and timing apply to you.
Food type and portion can be part of the picture, but a rise does not prove the snack was the only cause. Activity, medication timing, stress, hydration, sleep, and illness can also affect glucose. Focus on repeated patterns rather than drawing a broad conclusion from one reading.

How to look for a repeat pattern
Write down the snack and portion, glucose reading and timing, activity, medication timing, and factors such as stress, hydration, sleep, or illness. The ADA recommends recording readings and factors that may affect them, then reviewing recurring patterns with a doctor or diabetes educator. CGM trend information can help show how glucose changes over time, while its interstitial readings may lag finger-stick blood glucose by about 5–15 minutes; see the ADA’s CGM explainer.
Should you exercise to bring it down?
Exercise is not a universal fix for a high reading. The ADA advises checking urine for ketones when glucose is above 240 mg/dL and not exercising if ketones are present, because exercise can raise glucose further. Follow your clinician’s instructions and your diabetes care plan.
