Stop charging and stop using the device immediately. A swollen, rapidly heating, smoking, hissing or leaking silicon-anode battery can fail violently. Do not open, puncture, squeeze or remove it. If it is smoking, venting or burning, warn others, evacuate, avoid the smoke and call your local emergency number.
First, identify the hazard state
Use the battery’s condition to decide what to do next. A device that is merely swollen still requires isolation and professional handling; smoke, flames or rapidly increasing heat make it an emergency.

Never touch a swollen or ruptured battery with bare hands. Heat and leaked chemicals can cause severe burns.

Silicon anodes store lithium by alloying with it. During charging, the silicon expands; during discharge, it contracts. Repeated expansion and contraction can crack silicon particles, stress separators and packaging, and increase the chance of an internal failure.

Enovix Corporation reported in 2022 that silicon anodes can exhibit 20% or more cyclic swelling, compared with less than 10% in the conventional-graphite comparison it cited. That is a company technology comparison, not a guarantee for every commercial silicon cell or silicon-carbon battery.
A peer-reviewed 2025 study by Jiang and colleagues in Particuology found that unprotected floating silicon produced a 77% increase in heat release at 100% state of charge. In the tested pouch cells, the maximum measured temperature reached 875.2 °C. These were controlled laboratory results, not a universal temperature limit for phones, laptops, power banks or other consumer devices. They show why a damaged silicon-based cell must be treated as a serious lithium-battery hazard rather than as a harmless cosmetic bulge.
Warning signs that require action
Physical changes
- Bulging, swelling or a cover, screen or seam being pushed out of position.
- Blistering, discoloration or other casing deformation.
- Electrolyte leakage or a wet, crystalline or oily-looking residue.
Heat and sound
- Extreme heat, especially heat that rises rapidly while the device is not doing demanding work.
- Hissing, popping, crackling or whistling.
- Intense flame, glowing material or a package that appears to vent.
Smell, smoke and electrical behavior
- A strong or unusual chemical odor.
- Smoke, fumes or vapor.
- Charging that stops unexpectedly, behaves erratically or fails altogether.
GOV.UK lists extreme heat, bulging or swelling, hissing or cracking, unusual smell and smoke as warning signs. Fire and Rescue NSW also identifies discoloration, blistering, leaking electrolyte, fumes and intense flame. Any one of these signs is enough to stop using the device; several together indicate a rapidly worsening hazard.

Step-by-step response
- Stop the energy input. Unplug the charger only if you can do so without approaching a smoking, burning or otherwise dangerous device. Do not continue charging, reconnect the cable or place the device on a charging pad.
- Stop handling the device. If it is safe, turn it off using its normal control. Do not remove the casing, disconnect an internal pack, dismantle the device, press the swelling flat or puncture it. A removable battery should remain in place unless emergency responders or a qualified technician direct otherwise.
- Create distance. Keep people, pets and combustible materials away. Do not carry the device through a building, put it in a pocket or bag, or place it beside paper, bedding, fuel or other items that can burn. Avoid smoke and vapors and keep your face away from the pack.
- Escalate a worsening event. Smoke, flame, venting, explosive popping or rapidly increasing heat means leave immediately. Warn others, close doors if you can do that without delaying escape, call the local emergency number and stay outside until responders say it is safe. GOV.UK’s instruction is: “If your battery or device is smoking, a fire has already started. Raise the alarm, get out, stay out and call 999 immediately.” Use the emergency number for your own country.
- Arrange controlled handling afterward. Once the area is declared safe, contact the device manufacturer or a certified battery technician. Follow their instructions for transport and storage, and arrange specialist lithium-battery recycling, hazardous-waste collection or a manufacturer take-back program.
Choose the response for the device you have
Accessibility and size change what can be done safely, but they do not make a damaged cell safe to handle yourself.

Fire-service guidance can differ by jurisdiction and device. Follow instructions from your local fire authority and the manufacturer for that specific model rather than applying a generic online recipe.
What not to do
Do not puncture or flatten the swelling
Puncturing can let air and moisture reach reactive materials, release hot electrolyte or create an internal short. Pressing a bulge flat can tear separators and make a delayed thermal event more likely.

Do not open the casing or “remove the bad cell”
Even when a pack appears accessible, opening it can expose live terminals and damaged layers. Battery modules may remain energized after the device is switched off. Disassembly belongs to trained personnel with appropriate equipment.
Do not put it in household waste or ordinary recycling
Collection trucks and sorting facilities compact, crush and process materials in ways that can ignite a damaged lithium battery. A swollen pack can start a fire after it leaves your home, even if it is cool at the time you discard it.
Do not rely on a generic extinguisher or improvised container
Authorities differ on when water or other suppression methods are appropriate for small devices, and the correct response depends on the battery, enclosure and surrounding fire. Evacuation and professional response are the dependable rules. Use a suppression method only when your local fire authority or the manufacturer gives device-specific directions.

How to arrange safe disposal
- Record the device model, battery type if stated, symptoms and whether it was charging when the problem appeared. Keep this information away from the hot device if collecting it would require handling.
- Contact the manufacturer’s battery-support or safety channel and ask whether it offers a take-back route or approved transport instructions.
- If the manufacturer cannot help, contact a certified battery technician, specialist lithium-battery recycler or your local hazardous-waste service. Confirm that the provider accepts swollen, damaged or recalled batteries before traveling.
- Tell the provider that the battery is swollen, overheated, leaking, smoking or otherwise damaged. Do not conceal its condition in a parcel or ordinary drop-off box.
- Follow the provider’s packaging and transport instructions exactly. If the pack is hot, smoking or venting, do not transport it yourself; call emergency services.
Availability and rules vary by country, state or municipality. A retailer collection bin intended for intact household batteries may not be approved for a swollen pack, so verify acceptance first.
After the immediate danger
Do not resume charging or normal use merely because the device cools down or the bulge appears smaller. Cooling can stop visible symptoms without reversing separator damage, cracked silicon particles or a compromised seal. Keep the device out of service until the manufacturer or a qualified technician has assessed it and provided a safe disposition.

Answers to common questions
Is a hot, bulging silicon-carbon battery about to explode?
No one can predict the exact timing from appearance alone, but swelling combined with rapidly rising heat, hissing, smoke or fumes indicates a potential thermal event. Treat it as hazardous immediately: stop charging, create distance and escalate if those emergency signs appear.
Can I keep using a silicon-anode battery that is overheating?
No. Stop using and charging it. Silicon chemistry can involve greater cycle expansion than graphite, and a damaged cell is not made safe by being a newer or “silicon-carbon” design.
Should I puncture or remove a swollen battery?
No. Do not puncture, squeeze, dismantle or forcibly remove it. Have a manufacturer, certified technician or emergency responder determine the safe handling method.

Use the manufacturer’s take-back program, a certified battery service, a specialist lithium-battery recycler or a hazardous-waste service that confirms it accepts damaged packs. Never use household trash or an ordinary recycling stream.
