If it is available, retry over a stable connection, address any storage warning, and resume an interrupted download if the phone offers that option. If repeated downloads fail, try Samsung Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac. A phone that cannot boot normally after an update failure needs Samsung service.
First, check whether the update is available
A missing update is not necessarily a failed installation. Carriers develop and release many Galaxy updates, and an unlocked phone may still receive updates through the carrier that originally sold it. Releases can also roll out in waves, so a patch may not appear on every eligible device at once. Check the current release information from the phone’s original carrier, then check again later; Samsung suggests checking every few hours while a rollout is in progress. Some carriers require Wi-Fi, and a SIM-unlocked phone may need a SIM from its original carrier. These requirements vary by carrier. See Samsung’s failed-update troubleshooting guide.
To check the installed software version, open Settings → About phone (or About tablet) → Software information. Samsung’s guide identifies the Baseband version as the current software version. Menu labels can differ by device.
Retry the update on the phone
- Use a stable connection. Connect to reliable Wi-Fi if available; some carriers require Wi-Fi for large downloads.
- Follow any storage warning. If the phone says it needs more space, free the amount specified on-screen. You can use Device care to review storage or back up and remove files you no longer need. Samsung does not give one universal free-space threshold in its US troubleshooting guide.
- Resume an interrupted download. If an incomplete download appears in the notifications, tap it to resume when that option is offered.
- Keep the phone adequately charged. Samsung’s regional recommendations differ, so use the device’s on-screen instructions rather than relying on a single battery percentage. An update may restart the phone.
Samsung says phones commonly recover from an update error and try again, although some failures need additional troubleshooting.

Try Samsung Smart Switch if downloads keep failing
Smart Switch is an alternative update path when repeated on-device downloads fail; it will not necessarily offer an update for every model or release. Install Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac, connect the phone by USB, and check whether the program displays an Update option. If it does, follow the prompts. Keep the cable connected and do not use the phone until the process completes. Samsung notes that Verizon phones have a USB setting for Verizon’s software upgrade assistant that is not compatible with Smart Switch. If Smart Switch cannot connect
Try Samsung’s connection checks in order:
- Install available updates for the computer, then restart it.
- Remove and reinstall Smart Switch.
- When prompted on the phone, select Transferring files / Android Auto.
- Try another USB port or a different cable. If replacing the cable, make sure it supports data transfer and fits both devices.
- Try connecting the phone to another computer.
Use Safe mode only when an app may be involved
Safe mode can help test whether a downloaded app is contributing to device problems: it loads the phone’s original software and disables downloaded apps. If the problem disappears in Safe mode, an app may be responsible. This is a conditional diagnostic, not the first fix for every failed update; use it when you are seeing other app-related symptoms or Samsung’s instructions for your specific model call for it. Samsung also describes Safe mode in its boot-loop troubleshooting guidance.

If the phone will not boot after the failure
If the phone cannot boot normally after an update fails, contact Samsung Support or visit a Samsung service center. Samsung says service is required in this situation to reflash the device. Do not try improvised recovery or firmware-flashing steps; use Samsung support for the model-specific next step.
