First, identify whether the game or controller is the problem
If other games launch and the controller navigates the PS5 menus normally, start with the affected game. Sony’s game troubleshooting flow addresses download and installation, game updates, system software, and possible save-file problems. Controller troubleshooting is for symptoms such as failed pairing, charging, or button response—not a substitute for checking the game itself.
Use Sony’s PlayStation game freeze or crash troubleshooting for the relevant platform. Disc and downloaded games have different troubleshooting paths, so follow the branch that matches your copy.
If a downloaded PS5 game will not launch

Confirm the download and installation finished
Check the game’s download or installation status on the console. If it is still in progress or did not complete, let it finish before trying to launch again.

Check for a game update
Look for an available update for the affected game and install it. A game that is not fully updated may fail independently of the controller.

Update PS5 system software
Check that the console has current system software and install an available update. Then try the game again.

Test whether the save is involved
If the game still freezes or crashes, try starting it from the beginning without loading the existing save, as Sony’s guide suggests. If it works without that save, the problem may be save-specific. Avoid deleting saved data as an initial troubleshooting step.
If the controller also has connection or response problems
Only follow this branch if the DualSense itself is not pairing, charging, or responding as expected. Sony’s DualSense wireless controller support covers pairing with PS5, charge checks, controller software updates through console settings, and resetting the controller. Use its current instructions for the symptom you have.

- If you use a cable to troubleshoot charging or connectivity, make sure it supports data and synchronization; a charge-only cable is not suitable for that check.
- If the controller works unpredictably with the PlayStation Accessories app on Windows, Sony’s PlayStation Accessories app support recommends updating the app and controller, turning the controller off and reconnecting it, or resetting it.

When replacing a controller makes sense
Consider replacing a controller only after its own fault is established—for example, when it continues to fail to pair or respond after the appropriate controller troubleshooting. A PS5 DualSense replacement is not a general fix for an incomplete game download, a missing game update, outdated system software, or a save-specific crash. The available official guidance does not establish that a PS5 DualSense is a PS6 accessory.
