If the key says it was already used, sign in with the Microsoft account that redeemed it rather than entering the key again.
Before troubleshooting, identify the code and its error
“Microsoft 365 code” can refer to different products and redemption routes. Check the card, receipt, or confirmation email for the product name and version, then note the full error text or code shown on the page.
- Office or Microsoft 365 product key: A new, unused consumer key is generally redeemed at Microsoft365.com/setup or Office.com/setup. Microsoft’s current product-key error guidance applies to Office 2016–2024 and Microsoft 365 for home.
- Microsoft Store gift card or Xbox code: Use Microsoft’s gift-card and code redemption flow, not the Office product-key setup page.
- Business or organization key: Microsoft 365 Business Standard and volume-license keys may have a separate setup route or require an organization administrator. The consumer setup page may not accept them.
A product key is normally redeemed once and associated with the Microsoft account used at redemption. After that, installation and subscription management generally happen through that account, not by entering the same key again.
Fix the error you see
“This product key has already been used”
This message usually means the key was redeemed successfully. Sign in to the Microsoft account used at the original redemption, then open Services & subscriptions to install or manage Office or Microsoft 365. If you are setting up Microsoft 365 Family sharing, the subscriber should send the official sharing invitation or link; they should not pass their product key to another person.

“Invalid product key,” “key not found,” or an invalid-token message
First check the characters and confirm the product and setup page match. Microsoft notes that some characters are easy to confuse: B and 8, G and 6, O and 0, Q and 0, and VV and W. If possible, compare the entry with the purchase confirmation rather than retyping from a smudged card.
Next, check whether the key is actually for a different product or version. A Windows key, an older Office key, or a business or school/employer volume-license key may not work on the consumer Microsoft 365 setup page. A missing-part-number or invalid-token error can also indicate that the key is for a version the page does not support. Use the setup route specified for the product, or ask your organization’s administrator if the key came from work or school.

“KEY_NOT_ACTIVATED”
This specific error can mean the retailer did not activate the key at the point of sale. Contact the store that sold it and ask them to activate it; retry redemption after they confirm activation.
Key blocked or no longer valid
If Microsoft says the key is blocked or no longer valid, contact the seller about a refund or replacement. Microsoft warns that keys sold separately from legitimate software packages may be unauthorized, stolen, or otherwise fraudulently obtained. Avoid buying a replacement from an unverified key seller.

“This product key isn’t meant for your region”
Microsoft says Office product keys must be redeemed in the country or region where they were purchased. If you are redeeming from a different region, contact Microsoft Support for help; do not try to bypass the restriction with a VPN.
A region mismatch can also matter when using a key to extend an existing subscription established in another region. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance describes waiting until the existing subscription expires or redeeming the new key to a different Microsoft account in some cases. Follow the instructions for the precise error rather than assuming every region-related failure has the same fix.

Billing or subscription-limit error
For ConversionBlockedSubscriptionViolations, Microsoft directs users to the Microsoft account’s Payment & billing area to resolve the payment method or billing issue. If the message says the account has reached a subscription-duration or product limit, follow the guidance for that limit instead of repeatedly trying the key. Microsoft’s troubleshooting page states that one Microsoft account can extend a Microsoft 365 Family subscription to a maximum of five years; it also describes a separate limit for one-time Office purchases.
Setup page or browser problem
Microsoft lists JavaScript and cookies among possible causes of setup-page problems. Make sure JavaScript is enabled and that your browser permits cookies, then retry the correct setup page. Microsoft says iPad users need another device for product-key redemption because JavaScript is not supported there. If the page still fails after you check the product, account, and browser, use Microsoft Support and keep your key and proof of purchase available.

Choose the right next step

What to have ready if you contact support or the seller
- The exact error text and any error code.
- The product name and version printed on the card or purchase confirmation.
- Where and when you bought the code, and whether the retailer confirmed point-of-sale activation.
- The country or region where it was purchased and where you are trying to redeem it.
- The Microsoft account you believe was used, if the key may already have been redeemed.
- Your key and proof of purchase; share the key only through the official support or seller channel handling the case.
