If a highway ramp is closed, stay out of it and follow the posted signs, barriers, and directions from traffic personnel. Use the official detour or alternate route designated by the responsible transportation agency; treat a navigation app as a secondary aid, not permission to ignore a closure. If you cannot identify a safe, open route, stop somewhere legal and safe to reassess or delay the trip.
What to do before you leave
Check your state or local transportation agency’s official road-condition service or 511 before setting out. Look for the ramp closure, any agency-published detour, current road conditions, and travel-time information. These services may also offer traffic speeds and cameras, though the features and incident details vary by location. For example, Indiana’s 511IN provides road conditions, cameras, and traffic speeds (INDOT travel conditions).
If the official information indicates a major disruption, allow extra time, choose an agency-approved alternative, or consider delaying the trip. Check again close to departure because closures and conditions can change.
What to do as you approach the closed ramp
- Obey the closure controls. Follow signs, barriers, and instructions from traffic personnel. Do not enter a closed ramp, move a barricade, or make an abrupt maneuver to get back onto your planned route.
- Continue on an open, signed route. Follow the posted detour or alternate route. Ramp closures can shift traffic to other ramps and nearby roads, so expect congestion and allow for changed travel times; the Federal Highway Administration describes these effects in its ramp-management handbook.
- Reassess from a safe place. If signs do not make the route clear, continue to a safe place where stopping is permitted before checking a map or contacting local information. Do not stop in a travel lane, on a ramp, or at the closure point to plan your next move.
If your navigation app disagrees with the signs
Follow the closure signs and official detour, not an app’s instruction to enter a closed road or take a prohibited route. Navigation apps may lack current closure or weather information. Oregon DOT warns that GPS directions can lead drivers onto roads that are unmaintained or impassable, and recommends checking TripCheck or 511, consulting a map or local information, and changing plans when uncertain (ODOT GPS navigation tips).

Use an app to supplement route awareness only when its directions are consistent with current signs and restrictions. A printed map or road atlas can help with general orientation in an unfamiliar area, but it cannot verify live closures, road conditions, or detours.
Check that an alternate route suits your vehicle and conditions
An alternative that is open to some traffic may not be appropriate for every vehicle or situation. Before following an agency-published route, check the applicable restrictions and current conditions:

- Vehicle limits: Look for height, weight, and other restrictions, especially if you are driving a truck, towing, or operating an oversized vehicle. NJDOT cautions that GPS may send traffic onto local roads unsuitable for commercial vehicles because of low bridges, weight limits, or increased traffic volumes (NJDOT I-80 sinkhole motorist information).
- Weather and road conditions: Do not assume a local, remote, or forest road is passable simply because an app offers it. Oregon DOT advises drivers to stay on state roads when unfamiliar with the area and conditions.
- Other closures: Nearby local roads may also be closed, particularly during severe weather or wildfire incidents. Oregon DOT’s August 2026 wildfire-season guidance says to follow official detour signs and transportation-authority routes rather than GPS directions onto potentially unsuitable local or forest roads (ODOT wildfire-season newsletter).
If the detour is unclear or conditions are unsafe
Do not improvise onto an unfamiliar road just to keep to your schedule. Pull over only where it is legal and safe, then check the responsible transportation agency’s updates or seek local information. If no safe route is clear, delay or change the trip. During wildfire conditions, ODOT advises staying home if possible rather than waiting at a closure point; closures can last for hours or days.
These are general United States-oriented steps, not a legal interpretation for every location. Signs, rules, and contact channels vary by state and incident. The correct detour depends on the specific closure, vehicle, weather, and live instructions, so rely on current local agency information rather than a route copied from another closure notice.
