If it is still unconfirmed, a supported wallet feature may let you replace it or raise its fee. If it is confirmed, you generally cannot cancel it; contact the recipient or service that controls the destination and treat recovery as uncertain. Never share your seed phrase or private key, or pay an unsolicited recovery agent.
Start by checking the transaction record
- Collect the details. Save the asset and amount, sending wallet or exchange, destination address, selected network, approximate send time, status or error message, and transaction hash if available. A transaction hash identifies a transaction; it is not the same as a wallet address. Formats vary by chain. The FBI’s IC3 cryptocurrency guidance shows examples of both.
- Open the send record. Check the transaction in the sending wallet or exchange. If the record provides a block-explorer link, open it and verify the status, destination, network, and confirmation count. Coinbase recommends checking both the transaction status and its explorer record; for a send pending at zero confirmations, it advises contacting Coinbase support. - Confirm the network with the recipient. The same asset can be available on multiple networks. Ask the recipient which network they can receive on, then compare it with the network used to send. A matching asset name or similar-looking address does not establish that the networks match.
- Find out whether the transfer is on-chain. A centralized exchange may process a transfer internally before recording it on a public blockchain. If the platform shows no transaction hash, ask its support team whether the transfer has been broadcast and what its current status is. The IRS guidance on digital asset transactions distinguishes on-chain and off-chain transactions.
If the crypto transaction is still pending
Pending generally means the transaction has not yet been included in a block. A low fee can contribute to a wait, but there is no universal confirmation time or cancellation control. For Bitcoin, blocks arrive about every 10 minutes on average, according to Bitcoin.org; block discovery is probabilistic, so that average is not a promise about when a particular transaction will confirm.
When to wait or contact the sending service
If an exchange is handling the transfer, use its official app or website to check the send record and contact support if the status remains unclear. If a self-custody wallet broadcast the transaction, consult that wallet’s official instructions before taking action. Do not send a second payment just because the first one is pending; first establish whether the original transaction has confirmed or been replaced.
When replacement or a fee bump may be possible
Some Bitcoin and Ethereum wallet workflows allow an unconfirmed transaction to be replaced or its effective fee increased. The available method depends on the chain, wallet, transaction state, and wallet support; it may also involve an additional fee. Trezor documents Bitcoin replace-by-fee (RBF) and child-pays-for-parent (CPFP), along with Bitcoin and Ethereum replacement guidance, in its stuck-transaction guide. Ethereum.org explains that an eligible pending Ethereum transaction may be replaced with a same-nonce transaction, including a cancellation attempt, in its Ethereum cancellation guide. These are chain-specific procedures, not a guarantee that a transaction can be stopped.

Follow only the instructions published for your wallet and chain. A replacement or cancellation attempt is not complete merely because a wallet displays a new request; check the resulting transaction status in the wallet or explorer.
If the transaction is confirmed but went to the wrong place
Once a transaction is confirmed, ordinary sender-side cancellation is generally unavailable. Bitcoin.org states that confirmed Bitcoin transactions can only be refunded by the recipient; Ethereum.org likewise describes an Ethereum transaction as irreversible. Wrong address
Check who controls the destination address. If you know the recipient, contact them and ask whether they can return the funds. If the address belongs to an exchange or other service, contact that provider through its official support channel with the transaction hash and relevant details. The provider may be able to explain its process, but it cannot reverse the blockchain record on demand.
If the destination is an unfamiliar address, belongs to someone who will not respond, or has no accessible owner, recovery may not be possible. Do not assume that an address that looks similar to the intended one is controlled by the same person.

Wrong network
Contact the receiving service if the destination was meant to be an account or wallet it controls. Whether the provider can recover a transfer depends on the asset, network, destination, and its own procedures. Coinbase says it cannot recover funds sent on the wrong network in the circumstances described in its unsupported-crypto recovery guidance. Do not assume another provider has the same policy.
Smart-contract destination
A contract may have a documented recovery or withdrawal function in some cases, but that depends on the specific contract. Check the contract or service’s official documentation and contact its official support channel. Do not trust an unsolicited offer to “unlock” or return the funds.

What support can—and cannot—do
A wallet or exchange’s support team can inspect its own records, clarify whether a transfer was broadcast, and explain any recovery procedure it offers. It cannot change a confirmed blockchain transaction simply by request. Some providers describe narrow internal recovery attempts for certain unsupported or incorrectly sent transfers to accounts they control. For example, Blockchain.com’s terms describe limited recovery attempts for certain transfers to its own accounts while warning that ordinary network transfers are irreversible. Check the current terms and eligibility directly with the provider; procedures are provider-specific.
Protect yourself from recovery scams
People who have lost crypto may be targeted by scammers posing as recovery agents, lawyers, or law-enforcement officials. The FBI warns that private recovery companies cannot issue seizure orders to recover cryptocurrency. Do not send more crypto as an upfront recovery fee, disclose a seed phrase or private key, or give an unsolicited contact identity or financial information. Preserve messages and transaction details, and contact your exchange only through its official app or website. In the United States, report suspected cryptocurrency investment fraud to the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). The FBI reported that victims reported more than $2.5 billion in cryptocurrency investment-fraud losses in 2022; that figure concerns reported investment fraud, not all crypto losses or recovery scams.
