First, check the transaction on the correct network’s block explorer before retrying, speeding it up, or trying to cancel it. A wallet’s “pending” or “failed” label is not enough to tell whether the payment reached the presale: the transaction may still be waiting, may have failed while charging gas, or may already be confirmed.
Check the transaction before taking action
- Open the transaction in your wallet. Find its transaction hash and use the explorer link shown in the transaction details, or search the hash in the official block explorer for the network you used.
- Verify the network and transaction details. Check the sender, destination or contract, amount, and explorer status. Check the nonce too if the explorer or wallet shows it.
- Use the explorer result to choose what to do next. A transaction that is still pending, one marked failed, and one that is confirmed require different responses. If the hash does not appear, it could be a wallet display or broadcast issue; that alone does not prove the presale received or rejected the payment.
MetaMask recommends checking the block explorer before resetting local wallet activity. Its pending transaction guidance explains how to inspect and handle a pending transaction. Do not share your seed phrase or private key with anyone offering to investigate.
If the transaction is still pending
On Ethereum and compatible networks, a transaction fee that is low relative to current demand can leave a transaction waiting. If your wallet still recognizes it as pending, it may offer a speed-up or cancellation option. These are replacement attempts, not universal fixes: what is available depends on the wallet and network.
Speeding it up
A speed-up resubmits the transaction using the same nonce with a higher fee. That can increase what you spend on network fees. Before approving it, check the proposed destination, amount, and fee in your wallet. Do not submit a separate presale payment just because the first transaction has not cleared; you could pay twice.

Trying to cancel it
Cancellation is also a replacement transaction using the same nonce, and it can only be attempted while the original transaction is pending. It is not guaranteed to succeed. MetaMask states, “Transactions that have already been confirmed cannot be reversed.” Its instructions for speeding up or cancelling a pending transaction apply to supported networks and wallets; do not assume the same controls exist on every chain.
If the explorer says the transaction failed
Read the explorer’s failure details before deciding whether to try again. A failed contract call can still consume gas: gas pays for the computation used to process a transaction, even when execution fails. MetaMask says this payment goes to validators, not MetaMask. Whether another presale attempt makes sense depends on why the transaction failed, whether the sale is still open, whether you used the correct contract, and the project’s sale rules. Those facts cannot be determined from a failed status alone. Resolve the failure reason and verify the contract and sale details before authorizing another payment.
If the transaction is confirmed but tokens or a refund are missing
Do not try to cancel a confirmed transaction. Save the transaction hash and contact the project only through contact details published on independently verified official channels. A confirmed status does not by itself establish whether the presale contract granted an entitlement, whether tokens can be claimed later, or whether the project permits a refund. Those answers depend on the particular contract and sale terms.

If you suspect the presale was a scam
If you paid a suspected scammer in cryptocurrency, the FTC advises contacting the exchange or crypto ATM operator promptly, reporting the transaction, and asking whether reversal is possible. You can also report the scam to the FTC. The FTC notes that crypto payments typically lack the same legal protections as debit and credit card payments and can be difficult to recover.
Be wary of unsolicited recovery offers. The FTC warns that recovery scammers may target people who have already lost money, demand a retainer or processing fee, or ask for financial information. Do not pay someone promising guaranteed recovery. See the FTC’s guidance on refund and recovery scams.

Do not reset wallet activity as a first fix
Resetting wallet activity clears local transaction history; it does not reverse an on-chain transaction. MetaMask advises checking the explorer first and says to reset only when instructed by support. Follow its wallet reset guidance rather than using a reset to try to change a transaction’s status.
