If a crypto exchange flags a deposit or withdrawal linked to a mixer, stop moving the assets and respond through the exchange’s authenticated support or compliance channel. Verify that the request is genuine, preserve the complete transaction history, and provide a truthful explanation of where the funds came from and how they reached the flagged transaction.
A mixer connection is a risk signal, not automatic proof that you knowingly did anything illegal. FinCEN’s 2019 advisory describes mixing or tumbling as a suspicious-activity indicator in a specific context involving efforts to obscure illicit flows. An exchange may still restrict activity while it investigates, and submitting documents does not guarantee that funds or an account will be released.
Why an exchange may flag a mixer-linked transaction
Crypto exchanges use blockchain analytics, sanctions screening, identity checks and transaction-monitoring systems to identify activity that needs additional review. A transaction can be flagged when an incoming or outgoing address has direct or indirect exposure to a mixing service, when funds pass through several intermediary wallets, or when the transaction pattern resembles attempts to obscure ownership or movement.

It is not a finding that every person whose funds touch a mixer committed a crime, and it does not require every exchange to reach the same decision.

An alert can therefore affect an innocent customer whose funds acquired indirect exposure after a purchase, peer-to-peer transfer, payment, airdrop, mining payout or transfer through a custodial service. The exchange may ask for source-of-funds or source-of-wealth information, pause withdrawals, limit trading, or close a review without explaining every internal detection rule.
First, confirm that the request is genuine
Phishing messages often imitate exchange compliance notices and ask for a password, seed phrase, private key, remote-access session or payment to “unlock” an account. A legitimate review should be handled inside the exchange account or through a verified support path.
- Open the exchange’s known official website or mobile application yourself. Do not use a link in an unexpected email, text message or social-media direct message.
- Sign in and look for an authenticated notification, case number, banner or document-upload task. Save a screenshot or PDF of the notice, including the date and exact wording.
- Check whether the message identifies the account, transaction or review category. If it does not appear in the account, contact support through the official help center and ask whether a case exists.
- Use only the secure upload or messaging flow provided after login. Never send a seed phrase, private key or one-time authentication code; an exchange does not need those to verify a transaction.
Kraken’s instructions updated October 1, 2026, illustrate one platform-specific process: an additional-information request is viewed and answered by logging in through a web browser. Other exchanges may use a different path, so treat that process as an example rather than a universal rule.

Before consolidating wallets, sending a “test” transaction or deleting messages, create a read-only record of what happened. Moving funds during a review can create additional hops and make the provenance harder to explain.

- Save the exchange alert, case number, emails and in-account messages in their original form.
- Export transaction histories from the exchange accounts and wallets involved. Keep the original exported files and make a separate working copy for notes.
- Record each relevant transaction ID (hash), date and time, asset, network, amount, sending address, receiving address and any intermediary address you can identify.
- Collect purchase confirmations, bank or card records, mining or staking statements, invoices, payroll or business records, and peer-to-peer correspondence that explains how you acquired the asset.
- Note gaps. If an old wallet no longer has complete history or a service cannot provide a statement, write down what is missing and why instead of recreating an “original” record.
Preservation is also useful if the exchange asks for a longer date range later. Kraken says it may request clarification, a different document or additional historical records after reviewing an initial response.
Build a chronological provenance explanation
Compliance reviewers need to connect the source of the asset to the deposit or withdrawal they flagged. Write a short timeline in plain language before uploading documents. Start with the first acquisition and end with the transaction under review.
Describe the original source
State whether you bought the crypto through an exchange, received it as payment, mined or staked it, obtained it from a business or sold another asset. Include the date, amount, asset and account or wallet used. If there were multiple sources, separate them rather than presenting one blended explanation.

List every transfer you know about
Identify the wallet or service that sent the funds, your own wallets, custodial accounts and any intermediary addresses. Explain which addresses you control and how you know that—for example, an exchange withdrawal record or a wallet history. Do not claim ownership of an address merely because funds passed through it.

Address the mixer exposure directly
If a mixer hop appears in the path, say where it appears and what you know about it. If you did not initiate that hop, explain when you received the funds and from whom, if known. If your records cannot identify a counterparty, say so. Concealing a hop or submitting a story that conflicts with on-chain data can create a larger credibility problem than acknowledging an evidence gap.
Explain the purpose of the flagged transaction
Describe why you deposited, withdrew or transferred the crypto: a sale, payment, custody move, investment transfer, refund or another legitimate purpose. Keep the explanation factual and tie each important statement to a record. Avoid speculation about the mixer’s operators or claims about another person’s intent that you cannot prove.
Match documents to the exchange’s questions
Exchanges differ in what they accept, but their published examples show the kinds of records that make a provenance chain easier to verify. A strong document identifies the account or wallet, shows the source or transfer, and contains dates, amounts and addresses that line up with the blockchain.

Kraken lists an external-exchange statement with identifying account and wallet information together with evidence of the original source when crypto came from another exchange. For crypto already held in an exchange account, it describes a bank statement or wallet transaction showing the transfer into that account. Coinbase’s published examples include external-exchange statements and external-wallet histories containing dates, transaction types, amounts and addresses. When there are several sources, provide evidence for each one the platform asks about.

Submit a clear, accurate response
- Answer every question in the order asked. Use the exchange’s case number in your subject line or upload description if one is provided.
- Use a timeline. A numbered list with dates, amounts, transaction IDs and addresses is easier to review than a long narrative.
- Connect files to claims. Label attachments descriptively, such as “2025-04-12 external exchange withdrawal, transaction ID …,” and identify the line of the timeline each file supports.
- Keep documents legible. Do not crop out the account identifier, date, amount, network or address that the reviewer needs. Redact sensitive information only when the platform allows it and without hiding requested facts.
- State limitations plainly. If a service no longer provides a statement, explain that and attach alternative records. Never manufacture a missing invoice, alter a screenshot or backdate a file.
- Save proof of submission. Keep a copy of every file, the final text, upload confirmation and timestamp. Monitor the authenticated account and official email for follow-up questions.
A concise response format
You can organize your explanation like this:
- Transaction under review: asset, network, amount, date and transaction ID.
- How I acquired the funds: source, date, amount and supporting account or wallet.
- Transfer path: each known wallet or service in sequence, with addresses and transaction IDs.
- Mixer exposure: the point at which it appears, what I know about it and what I cannot establish.
- Purpose: why I made the deposit or transfer.
- Attachments: a numbered list matching each statement above.
What not to do during a review
- Do not route funds through another exchange, mixer, privacy service or newly created wallet to avoid screening.
- Do not split a transfer into smaller amounts in an attempt to bypass monitoring.
- Do not provide inaccurate or incomplete know-your-customer information. OFAC guidance identifies refusal to provide additional transaction information and inaccurate or incomplete KYC information as risk indicators in a compliance context.
- Do not give anyone your seed phrase, private key, password or authentication code.
- Do not threaten support staff, open repeated tickets with contradictory explanations or send speculative accusations about the analytics provider.
- Do not assume that a blockchain explorer label is definitive proof of who controlled an address. Treat labels as leads and support your explanation with exchange and wallet records.
What the regulator guidance does—and does not—tell you
FinCEN’s March 18, 2013 guidance distinguishes a virtual-currency user from an exchanger or administrator for purposes of federal Bank Secrecy Act obligations. That classification concerns business responsibilities; it is not a personal defense and does not determine whether an exchange may review or restrict your account.
OFAC states that sanctions obligations apply to digital-currency transactions as they do to traditional currency for people subject to OFAC jurisdiction. Its FAQ 560 and 2021 virtual-currency guidance do not decide whether a particular reader’s transaction is prohibited. A sanctions match, a request for a formal legal hold, a seizure notice or a law-enforcement reference requires individualized advice.
FinCEN announced a proposed rulemaking on international convertible virtual-currency mixing on October 19, 2023. That announcement described a proposal, not a final rule. Do not treat it as proof that a later regulation automatically applies to your transaction; check the current official status and the law governing your situation.
When to involve a lawyer
Consider consulting a lawyer experienced in digital-asset compliance and the relevant jurisdiction when the exchange mentions sanctions, law enforcement, a subpoena, seizure, forfeiture, a legal hold or suspected criminal proceeds. Legal advice is especially important when the amount is substantial, the transaction involves another country, or you may be questioned by an investigator.

Give counsel the preserved alert, your timeline, complete transaction exports and every document submitted to the exchange. Do not destroy records or continue moving the assets while waiting for advice. A lawyer can explain jurisdiction-specific rights and obligations, but cannot guarantee that an exchange will restore access.
Possible outcomes and how to plan for them
An exchange may request more information, maintain a temporary restriction, clear the review, limit particular services or close the account under its terms. There is no universal review deadline, and the outcome can depend on the asset, network, transaction history, jurisdiction and quality of the evidence. Continue checking the authenticated case channel and answer follow-up questions consistently.
If access is restored, download the final account and transaction records for your files. If the account is closed or assets remain restricted, ask for the written decision and any permitted appeal or withdrawal process. Do not create a new account to evade the decision; ask the exchange what lawful next step, if any, is available.
