After the reset, remove the PC from your Microsoft account. Microsoft’s Clean data option makes deleted files harder to recover, but it is not certified data erasure.
1. Back up files you want to keep
A reset removes data from the PC, so first copy any documents, photos, or other files you want to retain. Microsoft recommends backing up important information and identifies Windows Backup in its handoff guidance: Before you recycle, sell, or gift your Xbox or Windows PC.
Check the backup destination before proceeding: confirm that the files you need are actually there and accessible. Do not assume a backup completed just because you started it.
2. Check BitLocker or device encryption
Windows device encryption may turn on automatically when a PC is set up with a Microsoft account or a work or school account. If the PC is encrypted, certain recovery operations may require its BitLocker recovery key. Find the key and make sure you can access it before beginning: Device Encryption in Windows.

The key is a 48-digit number. Microsoft says it may be backed up to a Microsoft account or a work or school account; verify that the backup exists and that you can sign in to reach it. You can also save a copy to a USB flash drive, but keep that drive separate from the PC: Back Up Your BitLocker Recovery Key. Microsoft says support cannot retrieve or recreate a lost recovery key.
3. Reset Windows and remove your personal data
- Open Settings > System > Recovery > Reset PC.
- Choose Remove everything. This removes personal files, apps, and settings; Keep my files preserves personal files and is not the right choice for a PC you are handing to someone else.
- Turn on Clean data when prompted. This makes removed files harder for other people to recover.
- Choose Cloud download or Local reinstall for the Windows reinstall source. Cloud download fetches a fresh copy of Windows; Local reinstall uses files already on the PC and may not include the latest updates. This choice is separate from whether your files are removed.
- Start the reset and let it finish without manually restarting the PC.
Microsoft warns that the screen may remain black for a long time—occasionally more than 15 minutes—and that the PC may restart itself. Manually restarting it during the process could cause the reset to fail. See Microsoft’s Reset your PC guidance.

What Clean data does—and does not—do
Microsoft Support explains that Clean data “makes it harder for other people to recover files you’ve removed.” The same guidance explicitly states that this consumer feature does not meet government and industry data-erasure standards. It is intended to make ordinary personal handoffs safer, not to certify a drive as sanitized.
If the PC contains confidential organizational data subject to formal disposal requirements, follow your organization’s approved sanitization policy rather than relying on Windows Reset as certified erasure.

4. Remove the PC from your Microsoft account
Once the PC is backed up and reset, go to the Microsoft account device page, sign in, and remove the old PC from your account. Microsoft also documents an Unlink step associated with the Microsoft Store device limit. Account cleanup is a separate web action; it does not replace the Windows reset. Follow the instructions on Microsoft’s device handoff page.

After the reset completes, leave the PC at the Windows setup screen rather than signing in and setting it up with your own account again. This practical handoff lets the new owner complete setup using their own account; Microsoft’s handoff instructions document the reset and account-removal steps but do not describe stopping at the setup screen as a separate mandatory requirement.
