If a bank, credit union, card issuer, or other financial firm says your information was exposed, first verify the notice through an official channel, then protect the affected account and respond according to the type of data involved. A breach notice does not by itself mean someone has used your information. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) directs consumers who receive a notice to IdentityTheft.gov/databreach for breach-response guidance.

1. Verify the notice without using its links or phone number

Unexpected breach messages can be imitated by scammers. Do not click a link or call a number in an email or text to investigate. Instead, type the firm’s known web address yourself or use the phone number printed on your bank card or statement. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) advises contacting financial institutions and government agencies through official websites and phone numbers because scammers impersonate them: CFPB identity-theft guidance.

Once you reach the firm, ask its fraud department:

  • What information was exposed, and when did the incident occur?
  • Which account, card, login, or access device may be affected?
  • What steps has the firm already taken to secure it?
  • Should you change credentials, replace a card, or close or restrict an account?
  • How can you contact the firm’s fraud team again, and what case number should you keep?

Keep the notice and any case number, but do not send passwords, one-time passcodes, or full account credentials in response to an unsolicited message.

2. Match your response to the information exposed

Read the notice carefully. The right next step depends on whether the exposure involved account access, payment details, personal identifiers, or more than one category. Ask the firm to clarify anything the notice does not specify.

Change the affected password and PIN, and change the same password anywhere else you reused it. Use a unique password for each account and turn on two-factor authentication where offered.

If your Social Security number was exposed

Order and review your credit reports for accounts or activity you do not recognize. Consider a credit freeze or fraud alert to make it harder for someone to open new credit in your name. These steps address credit-file risks; they do not secure an existing bank account.

If the firm offers free monitoring or identity-theft insurance

Read the notice for the offer, enrollment deadline, eligibility, coverage, and duration. The FTC says consumers can use free services offered by the affected organization. Do not assume a monitoring offer covers every kind of misuse; see the FTC’s explanation of credit and identity monitoring.

3. Secure and watch existing bank and card accounts

Contact the affected bank, credit union, card issuer, or other firm using the official number or website. Ask its fraud department what protections fit your situation: it may recommend changing access details, replacing a card, restricting access, or closing and replacing an account. The FTC’s identity-theft recovery steps likewise advise contacting companies where fraud occurred and asking them to close or freeze affected accounts: IdentityTheft.gov recovery steps.

Direct account review remains necessary even if you freeze your credit.

4. Check your credit and choose a freeze, fraud alert, or monitoring

A freeze and a fraud alert work differently. You can use both. The FTC explains the options and how to request them at Credit Freezes and Fraud Alerts.

Option What it does Setup and duration Important limit
Credit freeze Restricts prospective creditors’ access to your credit file, making it harder to open new credit in your name. Free. Request it separately from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. It remains in place until you lift it. Does not stop withdrawals or charges on existing accounts. You may need to lift it temporarily when applying for credit.
Initial fraud alert Asks businesses to verify your identity before opening new credit. Free. Contact one of the three nationwide credit reporting companies; it must notify the other two. It lasts one year and may be renewed. Does not block access to your credit report.
Credit or identity monitoring Reports specified changes to credit files or other databases, depending on the service. Coverage and price depend on the provider; the affected firm may offer a service free. Coverage varies. Credit monitoring will not alert you to bank-account withdrawals or every instance of Social Security number misuse.

If you suspect identity theft, check your credit reports for unfamiliar accounts or inquiries. IdentityTheft.gov says you can get free weekly reports through AnnualCreditReport.com. For monitoring, ask which bureaus, databases, and events are covered, how often checks occur, and what the service costs.

IdentityTheft.gov describes an extended fraud alert lasting seven years for people whose identity was stolen, subject to its reporting requirements. You may also place a credit freeze. A freeze and an alert have different effects, so choose based on whether you want to restrict prospective creditors’ access to your file, ask them to verify your identity, or do both.

6. Report unauthorized electronic transfers promptly

If money moved from your account without permission, call your financial institution as soon as you notice it, then follow its instructions for reporting the transfer. Keep copies of statements and communications. The CFPB’s guidance explains the rules for reporting unauthorized electronic fund transfers and for Regulation E liability for unauthorized transfers.

For covered electronic transfers, the CFPB says you generally must notify the bank or credit union within 60 days after it sends the periodic statement showing the unauthorized transfer to avoid liability for later transfers. If a debit card or other access device was lost or stolen, different timing rules may apply. After notice, the institution generally has ten business days to investigate, subject to the applicable rules and circumstances. These are not guarantees of reimbursement: the applicable protection depends on the account and transaction, the timing, and the facts.

7. Keep a simple record of what you do

Use a secure place to record the date you contacted the firm, the department and phone number used, the case number, the accounts or credentials changed, and any follow-up deadline the firm gives you. Save copies of relevant notices and statements. This record can help you follow up consistently and support a dispute if you later find unauthorized activity.
