Before sending cryptocurrency across a border, confirm that the recipient can receive the exact asset on the exact network at the address and any memo or tag they provide. Then calculate how much they can actually access after every fee and conversion, check both providers’ requirements and the rules that apply to you, and treat a confirmed blockchain transaction as potentially irreversible.
1. Confirm the recipient can receive the asset and network
Ask the recipient to get current deposit instructions directly from their wallet or exchange. Verify the asset ticker and, when relevant, its contract or other asset identifier; the blockchain network; the complete receiving address; and any required memo, destination tag or other field.
Do not assume that two assets with the same name or ticker are interchangeable across networks. Ethereum.org notes that tokens such as DAI or USDC can exist on multiple networks and that the recipient must use the same network for a token transfer. A network mismatch can leave funds inaccessible or require recovery that is not available.
Also confirm that both the sending and receiving services support that asset-network combination and that the recipient can use or cash out the funds where they live. Support for a token alone does not establish support for every network on which it exists.

2. Verify the address and review the final transaction
Use the address supplied through a trusted channel and check the entire destination, not just its first and last characters. Confirm the amount, asset, network, address and any memo or tag on the final confirmation screen before authorizing the transfer.
Ethereum.org warns that a confirmed Ethereum transaction is irreversible. For Bitcoin, Bitcoin.org also cautions that sending to the wrong address can mean losing the funds. Do not count on being able to cancel or reverse a transfer after it has been confirmed.

If this is a significant first transfer to the recipient, a small test transfer can reduce the amount exposed to an address or setup error. Coinbase Wallet and Bitcoin.org recommend testing before a larger transfer. A test has its own fee and does not guarantee that a later transfer will succeed or be recoverable; use it only if the cost and both providers’ rules make sense.
Never share a recovery phrase or private key with someone claiming to be support. Ethereum.org says legitimate support services will not ask for them.

3. Calculate the amount the recipient can actually use
Compare the expected amount available to the recipient, not just a quoted sending fee or the amount of cryptocurrency you intend to send. Assemble the costs and exchange rates along the whole route:
- What you pay to acquire or convert the cryptocurrency, including any spread or platform charge.
- The blockchain network fee and any sending-provider charge.
- Any receiving-side fee or intermediary deduction.
- The exchange rate and cost when the recipient converts or cashes out, plus whether local cash-out is available to them.
- The estimated net amount in the recipient’s local currency and when it is expected to be usable.
Check when the estimate was calculated and whether the exchange rate or fees can change before the transaction executes. Ethereum network fees vary with network conditions, so an estimate is not necessarily a fixed total.

For qualifying US consumer remittance transfers above $15 through a covered provider, CFPB rules can require disclosures including fees and taxes, the applicable exchange rate, certain intermediary fees, the expected delivered amount, possible additional foreign deductions and availability timing. Whether a particular crypto-related transfer qualifies depends on the transaction and provider; these protections should not be assumed to apply to every cryptocurrency transfer.
4. Ask providers about identity checks and transfer requirements
Ask the sending and receiving providers whether they support the corridor, asset and network, and what information or review they require. Depending on the provider and applicable law, the sender may need to supply originator details, beneficiary details or proof of ownership of a self-hosted wallet. Additional review can affect timing or access to funds.

These obligations are not universal rules for every direct wallet-to-wallet transfer. For example, EU Regulation 2023/1113 and related European Banking Authority guidance set information requirements for covered providers, including handling certain transfers involving self-hosted addresses. FINTRAC describes obligations for covered entities in Canada. The applicable requirements depend on jurisdiction, transfer structure and provider.
FATF reported on 16 July 2026 that 83% of surveyed jurisdictions had passed legislation implementing the Travel Rule, up from 73% in 2025, while a further 11 jurisdictions reported implementation was underway. This is a survey of jurisdictions, not a measure of which services are available for a particular country pair.

Check whether the transfer and any planned cash-out are permitted under the laws that apply to you and the recipient, as well as the providers’ terms. Sanctions restrictions can apply to digital currency as well as traditional payment methods. OFAC states that US sanctions obligations are the same for digital and traditional currency transactions for persons subject to US jurisdiction.
OFAC also cautions that its published digital-currency addresses associated with blocked persons may not be exhaustive. Searching an address list is therefore not legal clearance. If the legal status of a transaction is unclear, get qualified advice before transferring funds.
6. Compare the crypto route with other remittance options
If you are also considering a conventional remittance service, compare the whole payment path. CFPB disclosures can provide a useful US template when they apply, but they do not establish that a crypto transfer is cheaper or faster.
Quick Recap
| What to compare | Crypto route | Conventional remittance route |
|---|---|---|
| Recipient proceeds | Estimate the net amount after acquisition, platform, network, receiving and cash-out costs and conversions. | Use the disclosed delivered amount where applicable, and check the exchange rate and any additional foreign deductions. |
| Time to usable local funds | Check the expected transaction status, provider processing and the recipient’s conversion or cash-out steps. | Check the provider’s stated availability timing and what the recipient must do to access the funds. |
| Availability and compliance | Confirm asset-network support, recipient access, identity checks and applicable legal restrictions. | Confirm service coverage, recipient payout method, identity checks and applicable legal restrictions. |
| Error handling and reversibility | Verify all transaction details; do not assume a confirmed blockchain transfer can be stopped or reversed. | Ask the provider what its cancellation, correction and dispute processes allow for this transfer. |
| Custody, privacy and support | Understand who controls the keys or account, what information providers require and what support is available. | Understand what information the provider collects, how the transfer is handled and what customer support is available. |
