Before ordering a phone from outside Canada, confirm the exact model variant works with your intended carrier, meets Canadian wireless-equipment requirements, has usable warranty or repair support, and still costs less after shipping, duty, and taxes. A matching set of LTE or 5G bands by itself does not guarantee that calling and carrier features will work.
1. Identify the exact model variant
Start with the full model number, not just the product family name. Phones sold under the same name can have different radios or software configurations in different regions. Ask the seller for the model number, country of sale, condition, and proof of purchase before you pay.
Use that exact model number when checking carrier compatibility and Canadian equipment approval. If the seller cannot identify the variant, you cannot reliably confirm those checks.
2. Confirm it works on your Canadian carrier
Check the model directly with the carrier you plan to use. Compare its supported LTE and 5G bands with the carrier’s requirements, but also verify voice calling over LTE (VoLTE), any carrier-specific features you rely on, and the carrier’s eligibility decision. A bands-only match is not a guarantee: software profiles and feature support can matter too.

For example, Rogers says a bring-your-own-device phone needs LTE and must be able to make calls over LTE. Its BYOD guidance also covers checking compatibility and device status: How to verify device compatibility for a Rogers BYOD plan. For iPhone, Apple lists carrier support and features by carrier: Wireless carrier support and features for iPhone in the United States and Canada. Neither a product name nor a general band list confirms that every imported variant will support every carrier feature.
Check unlock and IMEI status
Confirm that the phone is unlocked, then ask your intended carrier how to check its IMEI status and whether the device is eligible for its network. Unlocked means the phone is not restricted to one carrier; it does not mean a Canadian carrier has approved it or that its IMEI is acceptable.

3. Check Canadian wireless-equipment approval
Phones brought into Canada may not meet Canadian wireless standards. ISED warns that imported wireless equipment can cause interference to domestic networks. Check the equipment marking or search ISED’s Radio Equipment List and guidance on importing wireless equipment using the model number. Do this separately from the carrier check: equipment approval and carrier compatibility answer different questions.
4. Find out what warranty and repair support you will actually have
Read the manufacturer’s warranty terms for the country or region where the phone will be purchased. Do not assume that a Canadian warranty applies to a phone bought abroad. Samsung Canada says its Canadian limited manufacturer warranty does not cover products purchased outside Canada; its product warranty information directs customers to an authorized service centre for advice about repair. Apple’s iOS warranty terms for Canada and hardware warranty information also note that terms can vary by purchase country or region. Consumer rights can vary by province.

Before ordering, contact an authorized service provider and ask whether it will accept the exact imported variant for repair. Clarify what proof of purchase is needed and whether parts or service for that version are available. If the manufacturer’s warranty is unavailable in Canada, include the possibility of shipping the device back to its country of purchase or paying for local repair in your decision.
5. Estimate the full import cost
The listing price is not the delivered cost. Add shipping and any applicable duty and taxes. The amount depends on the goods’ country of origin, declared value, delivery method, and province. The country a phone ships from is not necessarily its country of origin, and duty rates vary by goods and origin.

Use current CBSA guidance for the shipment type: importing by mail or courier and determining duty and taxes owed, paying duty and/or taxes on imported goods, and gathering information about goods you want to import. For the tax treatment, CRA explains that the federal GST/HST component is calculated on the Canadian-dollar value including duty and excise tax: GST/HST on imports and exports. Check the current tools and rules for your own shipment rather than relying on a universal estimate.

Compare the Canadian seller’s total with the imported phone’s expected total: purchase price, shipping, estimated duty and taxes, and any likely warranty or repair expense. Also weigh the practical cost if the exact variant lacks a carrier feature you need. There is no universal savings threshold; the right comparison depends on the specific phone, shipment, province, carrier, and support options.

- Get the full model number and regional variant, country of sale, condition, and proof of purchase from the seller.
- Ask your intended carrier to confirm the exact model’s LTE/5G bands, VoLTE calling, relevant carrier features, and eligibility.
- Verify that it is unlocked and ask the carrier how to check its IMEI status.
- Search ISED’s Radio Equipment List or check the equipment marking for Canadian approval.
- Read warranty terms for the purchase region and ask an authorized service provider about repair of that exact variant.
- Estimate duty and taxes using the origin, value, delivery method, and destination province.
