Before buying a discounted Apple device, verify the exact model and condition, the seller’s return and warranty terms, and the total cost after financing or trade-in. A lower sticker price is not enough to establish that two offers are comparable. The detailed device-inspection steps below apply specifically to preowned iPhones; Apple Store policies cited here are for U.S. purchases and do not apply to other retailers.
Compare the exact device, not just the discount
Record what each offer actually includes before comparing prices. Check the model, storage, connectivity, condition, and whether it is new, open-box, refurbished, or used. Also note included accessories and any missing items. A discount on a different configuration or condition is not a like-for-like comparison.
- New: Confirm the configuration and the seller’s warranty and return terms.
- Open-box: Find out what was opened or used, whether accessories are included, and how the seller defines the condition.
- Refurbished: Check who refurbished it, what the process covers, and the warranty and return terms on that specific listing.
- Used: Inspect the individual device and its history where possible; a cosmetic grade alone does not establish its functional condition.
For comparisons across Apple Store, authorized retailers, and preowned sellers, weigh the complete offer rather than assuming one sales channel is always best.
Read the return policy and warranty before paying
For eligible purchases from the Apple Store in the United States, Apple’s Retail Sales Policy allows a return within 14 days of receipt, subject to its conditions, including requirements about the item’s condition and included parts, accessories, and packaging. Apple also describes a 14-calendar-day period after receipt to request a refund or credit if Apple reduces the price of an Apple-branded product bought from Apple. These are Apple Store policy terms, not general rules for other sellers or countries.

Apple says products bought from other retailers must be returned to those retailers under their own policies. For any seller, check the return deadline, eligible condition, restocking or shipping charges, and who provides the warranty. Find out what the warranty covers and how a claim is handled before you rely on it.
For a preowned iPhone, inspect its condition and history
Apple’s guidance for buying a preowned iPhone recommends using a reliable seller, understanding the return policy and certification, and asking about physical damage, battery health, and parts history. If inspecting in person, or after receiving the phone while a return option remains available, use this checklist:

- Look for physical damage. Check the display, frame, back, and connector for damage.
- Power it on and test it. Do not rely only on the listing description or a cosmetic grade.
- Check parts and service history where available. On supported iPhone models and software versions, review Settings > General > About for Parts and Service History.
- Review battery health. On supported models and software versions, check Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging.
- Confirm Activation Lock is off. Do not buy a phone that remains linked to someone else’s account; ask the seller to remove the lock before completing the purchase.
- Check carrier lock. In Settings > General > About, “No SIM restrictions” beside Carrier Lock means the iPhone is unlocked.
Menu names and available information depend on the iPhone model and software version. If the seller will not allow a reasonable inspection and there is no usable return path, treat that as a material purchase risk.
Confirm cellular compatibility and financing conditions
Before choosing a discounted iPhone, confirm that the exact model works with your intended carrier and plan. Apple’s U.S. iPhone shopping help advises checking whether your carrier supports eSIM and confirming support for your specific cellular plan. For U.S.-purchased unlocked iPhone XS, XS Max, XR, and later models, Apple says activation with eSIM is possible through supported carriers; carrier and plan support still need to be verified.

Check whether the phone is unlocked or subject to a carrier installment agreement. Apple notes that iPhones bought through the listed carrier installment plans may remain locked to that carrier until paid in full. Confirm the carrier, payoff status, and unlock conditions directly against the service you intend to use.
Calculate the real cost, including trade-in
Compare the amount you will actually pay, not a headline price that assumes a trade-in or financing offer you may not qualify for. Include taxes and any financing costs, then treat estimated trade-in credit as conditional. Apple says it applies credit after receiving the old device and confirming its condition matches the description provided.

Before sending in an old device, read the terms for that transaction. Apple says that in some cases returning an online purchase made with trade-in automatically cancels the trade-in, and it may not be possible to get the traded-in device back. Do not treat an estimated trade-in value as an unconditional discount.

The cited listings state a one-year limited warranty and a 14-day return policy, and indicate AppleCare may be purchased. Stock is limited, and model, configuration, included items, and current terms vary, so verify the particular listing and your location before buying.

Compare the refurbished item’s exact configuration and price with a new device on sale. The word “refurbished” alone does not tell you whether a particular offer is the better value; the included terms and configuration matter.
Use a side-by-side offer check
When choosing between two or more deals, put the relevant details in one place before deciding:
- Exact model, configuration, storage, and connectivity
- New, open-box, refurbished, or used condition—and who defines or certifies it
- Seller reliability and the party responsible for warranty service
- Total price after taxes and financing costs, with conditional trade-in credit shown separately
- Return deadline, eligible condition, and any return or shipping costs
- For a used iPhone: physical condition, battery health, parts history, Activation Lock, and carrier lock
- Included accessories and any missing items
