Before paying for an imported smartphone in India, verify every IMEI, get written evidence about applicable import and wireless approvals, confirm the exact regional model works with your carrier, and pin down warranty, returns, and route-specific costs. A phone’s marketing name alone is not enough: variants can differ, and none of these checks substitutes for the others.
1. Check every IMEI before paying
Ask the seller for the IMEI or IMEIs before purchase. Compare each number on the handset with the box and invoice; where available, dial *#06# on the phone to display it. Dual-SIM devices may have more than one IMEI, so check each relevant number rather than assuming one covers the whole device.
The Department of Telecommunications’ CEIR guidance says buyers can check an IMEI before purchase. It describes checking by sending KYM <15 digit IMEI number> by SMS to 14422. CEIR advises avoiding a phone whose status is blacklisted, duplicate, or already in use: “If the status of the mobile is shown as Black-listed, duplicate or already in use, please avoid buying the mobile.” Check an IMEI using CEIR’s guidance.
If the displayed number does not match the seller’s paperwork or the phone’s box, stop and ask for an explanation and corrected documentation. Do not treat a clean result for one IMEI as confirmation for a second one.

2. Ask for evidence of import and wireless compliance
IMEI-related import registration
Ask the seller or importer what evidence applies to the exact model and import route. Device Setu, also known as ICDR, is the Government of India platform described for issuing IMEI certificates for IMEI-based mobile devices imported through customs ports. Its FAQ outlines an importer-side sequence involving company, importer, OEM, model, and IMEI registration followed by certificate generation. That process description does not, by itself, verify that a particular retail listing or unit has complied. Read the Device Setu/ICDR FAQ.
A Ministry of Communications release dated 17 November 2025 describes mandatory IMEI registration for relevant IMEI-bearing telecom equipment imported for sale, testing, research and development, or other purposes through Device Setu. It also advises used-device buyers to check the national database. This is a dated policy statement; ask the importer how the requirement applies to the particular unit and route rather than relying on a generic listing claim. Read the Ministry of Communications release.

Wireless equipment type approval
DoT says Equipment Type Approval (ETA) applies to covered wireless communication devices operating in de-licensed bands or involving RF transmission. Its guidance describes self-declaration as an option for specified finished products, including smartphones, under stated conditions. This general rule does not establish that every imported phone needs the same paperwork or that a particular model is approved. Ask what ETA or other evidence applies to the exact model and circumstances. Read DoT’s ETA guidance.
A DoT document from 2018 says individual self-certification that a mobile handset has a genuine IMEI will suffice for listed cases including passenger baggage and online cross-border sales. Because that document is dated and does not resolve every current customs question, verify whether it applies to your route now; do not use it as a blanket assurance about present import requirements. Read the 2018 DoT document.

3. Confirm the exact variant works with your carrier
Check the full model number and regional variant—not just the phone’s product name—against the Indian carrier you plan to use. Compare the handset’s supported bands with the operator’s current requirements, and verify the features you rely on:
- 4G and 5G bands used by your operator in your area
- VoLTE support for voice calls
- Carrier aggregation, if you need it
- eSIM support and operator availability, if applicable
Request the model number from the seller and confirm specifications against the manufacturer’s documentation and your operator’s current information. A device being unlocked does not, on its own, establish that it supports every Indian network band or service feature.

4. Get warranty, repairs, and returns in writing
Before purchase, ask the seller and manufacturer whether the imported regional variant is eligible for warranty service in India. Get clear written answers on:
- Whether the manufacturer recognizes this exact variant for service in India
- Where repairs can be performed and whether parts are available locally
- Who pays shipping or other service costs if the phone must be sent elsewhere
- Who is responsible for a faulty, damaged, or misdescribed unit
- The return window, refund method, and any conditions on opened or activated phones
Do not infer Indian warranty coverage from the brand name or from a seller’s use of terms such as “international warranty.” The applicable terms need to be confirmed for the exact device and seller.

5. Check costs for your import route
First establish whether the phone is being brought in as passenger baggage, bought through a cross-border online sale, or sold through a commercial Indian import. Customs treatment and charges can depend on the route and current rules. The official sources cited above do not establish a current amount for a particular purchase, so ask the seller or importer for a complete written cost breakdown and verify applicable charges for your specific circumstances before committing.
Compare offers using the same checks
When comparing two listings with the same marketing name, compare the exact regional variants and request evidence against the same criteria:
