Before buying a wide book-style foldable, check whether it works for you in both positions: as a comfortable everyday phone when closed and as a useful small tablet when open. Compare screen shape and typing comfort, then portability, durability claims, software support, repair options, and the price in your region. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold and Galaxy Z Fold7 have official specifications available for several of those checks; current Fold8 details should be confirmed with Samsung.

Start with this buying checklist

  • Closed-screen comfort: Compare cover-screen width and aspect ratio, not only diagonal size. Try typing, reaching the top of the screen, and using your usual apps.
  • Open-screen usefulness: Check the inner panel’s shape against reading, video, split-screen work, and the apps you actually use.
  • Portability: Compare folded weight and thickness for the exact models and configurations available to you, ideally by holding them in person.
  • Hinge and crease: Treat hinge feel, useful hinge positions, crease visibility, and long-term reliability as separate questions.
  • Ingress protection: Read the exact model’s water and dust rating. A rating does not prove a foldable mechanism is immune to dust or failure.
  • Ownership terms: Check software-support promises, warranty coverage, repair routes, parts availability, and repair costs for your country and purchase channel.
  • Local price and availability: Confirm the current listing, storage configuration, carrier availability, and any promotion where you plan to buy.

Compare the phone closed before judging its inner display

A foldable is still your regular phone for much of the day. Its cover screen’s width and proportions affect how cramped typing feels, how much content fits, and whether you can comfortably reach controls. A diagonal measurement alone cannot answer those questions. If possible, test a few real tasks—replying to a message, entering a search, and navigating an app—rather than deciding from a product photo.

Samsung announced that the Galaxy Z Fold7 has a 6.5-inch cover display with a 21:9 aspect ratio. Google lists a 6.4-inch outer display for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. Those figures are a starting point, not a direct comfort ranking: they do not by themselves establish which screen is wider in hand or better for your typing habits. Samsung’s announcement also states that US general availability for the Fold7 began July 25, 2025. Samsung’s Fold7 announcement and Google’s Pixel 10 Pro Fold specifications provide the cited details.

Choose the open screen for your apps, not its diagonal alone

Google announced an 8-inch inner display for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. A Tom’s Guide review dated September 30, 2026, reports a 7.6-inch main display with a 4:3 aspect ratio for the Galaxy Z Fold8. The Fold8 figure is a secondary-source report; this comparison did not establish an official Samsung specification page for that model. Confirm it with Samsung before relying on it for a purchase.

Screen shape can matter as much as size. A more square-like panel may suit reading and split-screen multitasking, while video can show more unused space depending on its aspect ratio. App layouts also vary, so check whether your essential apps use the expanded panel well rather than assuming every app benefits equally. Google’s Pixel 10 Pro Fold announcement and Tom’s Guide’s Fold8 review are the sources for the screen figures above.

Understand what hinge, crease, and ingress claims establish

Hinge and crease

Opening feel, whether the hinge holds useful positions, and how visible the crease is are hands-on qualities. Product descriptions can explain a design, but they do not substitute for independent observations or prove how an individual device will age. Google describes the Pixel 10 Pro Fold as using a gearless hinge and says the hinge is “capable of handling 10+ years of folding.” That is Google’s product claim, not an independently verified lifespan. Samsung describes a redesigned hinge for the Fold7; that description likewise is not a quantified reliability result. Read independent reviews for subjective impressions and distinguish them from manufacturer statements.

Water and dust ratings

Google’s Pixel 10 Pro Fold announcement specifies IP68 water and dust resistance. Samsung’s Fold7 specification sheet lists IP48 water resistance. These are different ratings and should not be treated as equivalent; in particular, do not infer from the Fold7 sheet that dust cannot affect its foldable mechanism. A rating describes specified ingress-protection categories, not a guarantee that the hinge or flexible display cannot fail. Consult the exact model’s documentation and follow its care guidance. Samsung’s sheet says its information was current as of July 9, 2025. Google’s product page and Samsung’s Fold7 specification sheet contain the cited claims.

Check carrying comfort and ownership support in your market

Foldables trade a larger open display for a thicker, heavier object to carry when shut. Compare the folded weight and thickness of the exact devices you can buy, and hold them or try them in a pocket if convenient. The specifications cited here do not establish a complete standardized comparison of weight and closed thickness across the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, Fold7, and Fold8, so do not infer a winner from screen size.

Google’s official Pixel 10 Pro Fold specifications state seven years of OS, security, and Pixel Drop updates. That is a concrete support commitment for this model; it does not establish equivalent terms for Samsung models. Before purchase, check each manufacturer’s current support statement along with warranty coverage, authorized repair availability, parts supply, and likely repair costs in your country. These terms can depend on region and purchase channel, and comparable current warranty and repair terms are not established here.

Make the decision with a short in-person test

  1. Use the cover screen first. Type a short message, search for something, and open an app you use every day. Notice width, reach, and whether the layout feels cramped.
  2. Open the phone and test your main use. Read a page, play a video, or try a split-screen task. Check whether the panel’s shape suits the activity and whether your apps adapt.
  3. Handle the hinge and inspect the crease. Open and close the display, try any hinge positions you expect to use, and view the crease under ordinary lighting. Treat this as a snapshot of feel and appearance, not a durability test.
  4. Assess the folded device as something you carry. Compare the actual models in hand and, if possible, in a pocket. Use the exact configuration’s published weight and thickness rather than assuming all versions match.
  5. Verify ownership terms before paying. Confirm current local specifications, software support, warranty, repair access, parts, and price with the manufacturer or seller for the exact model and purchase channel.
