Before paying for a used Nintendo Switch or PS5, test the actual console and controller, verify online access, inspect the serial number and physical condition, and confirm exactly what is included. Ask the seller to remove their account and reset the system before handover. A console that works during inspection is useful evidence of its condition now—not a guarantee about future service access or reliability.
Before you meet the seller
Confirm the exact model and bundle
Ask whether the listing is for an original Nintendo Switch, Switch OLED, Switch Lite, PS5 Disc Edition, or PS5 Digital Edition. Confirm each included item rather than assuming there is a standard bundle: controllers, power and video cables, Switch dock and charger, stand, and any games should be named explicitly. A digital-only console does not have a disc drive.
Request evidence and agree on a test
PlayStation’s official used-product buying guide advises buyers to “Ask for video proof”. Request a recent video showing the console powering on, connecting to the internet, and testing its buttons, ports, controller inputs, and disc drive if present. Video is a useful first screen, but it cannot replace an in-person test of the unit you will buy.
Ask why the console is being sold, how long it has been used, whether it has been repaired or had account or service issues, and whether a receipt or original box is available. Treat responses as seller claims until you can corroborate them. Check seller reviews and agree in advance that you can test the console and that the seller will remove their account and reset it.

Check the sale terms
Compare the total cost, not just the asking price: account for missing accessories or repairs, and check the return window and warranty terms for that seller, sale type, and region. PlayStation’s US guidance says third-party used products are not covered by its warranty, while certified refurbished PlayStation products include warranty coverage. Its UK guide uses qualified wording and notes that statutory rights may apply. These terms are not interchangeable across countries or sellers, so read the terms that apply to the specific offer.
Inspect the console and accessories in person
Look for damage and verify the serial number
Examine the casing, screen, ports, vents, connectors, screws, and serial number. Look for cracks, impact or liquid damage, unusual dirt, missing parts, signs of opening, or a serial number that is missing or altered. PlayStation specifically recommends checking the unit for damage, broken warranty seals, and removed serial numbers. Compare the serial on the console with the box or receipt if available; Nintendo’s US lost-system guidance notes that a box or receipt may contain the Switch serial number.
A serial-number match and proof of purchase can help establish consistency, but neither is a public clearance check. Nintendo does not provide a public buyer tool on its lost-system page for checking whether a used Switch has been reported stolen. Investigate unexplained mismatches and walk away from an altered or removed serial.

Power on, inspect the image, and test controls
Start the system and check the display for image problems. Leave it running long enough to listen for abnormal noise or notice signs of overheating. Test every button and stick on the included controller; do not assume a controller is sound because it pairs or lights up.
- Switch or Switch OLED: Check Joy-Con attachment and detachment, buttons and sticks, handheld play, and wireless operation. Test the dock and included charging equipment if they are part of the deal.
- Switch Lite: Test its integrated controls and display; it does not use detachable Joy-Con in the same way as the standard Switch models.
- PS5: Test the DualSense buttons and sticks, wireless connection, and charging. Check the console’s ports and the controller’s connection rather than relying on a brief power-on.
These hands-on checks are practical ways to assess the particular unit. PlayStation’s official guide explicitly recommends testing buttons, ports, connectivity, image quality, and overheating.
Test the drive, ports, and battery where relevant
On a PS5 Disc Edition or another console with a disc drive, insert and eject a game or movie disc and confirm that the console reads it. Do not expect this test to apply to a PS5 Digital Edition or Switch Lite. Check the ports you expect to use and confirm included cables fit and work.

For a Switch, charge the console and observe whether it stays powered during the test. Nintendo UK warns that the built-in battery may fail if the console has not been charged or used for a long time. A short inspection cannot establish long-term battery capacity, but a console that will not charge or remain on needs to be treated as a fault.
Check online access before paying
Connect the console to Wi-Fi and confirm that it can reach the relevant platform services. On PS5, test PlayStation Network access before payment: Sony warns that a PlayStation product reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended from PlayStation services. A successful connection at the time of inspection is helpful, but it does not guarantee the console’s future service status.
On Switch, attempt online access and eShop connectivity. Treat a successful connection as a current functional check, not proof that there is no hidden or future restriction. If the console cannot connect, ask the seller to resolve the issue before completing the sale; do not assume a reset will remove a service restriction.

Have the seller remove accounts and reset the system
Do not count the seller’s digital game library as part of the purchase. Ask the seller to remove their account and reset the console, then verify that the first-run setup begins and the seller’s user details are absent.
Nintendo says Switch initialization deletes system-memory software, save data, screenshots, and user information, and unlinks associated accounts. It attempts to connect to the internet to unlink accounts; if initialization is done offline, the Switch may remain registered as the seller’s primary console. When possible, have the seller initialize it while online. PlayStation’s transfer and disposal guidance recommends backing up data, removing USB devices and discs, and resetting the console before transfer or disposal; for a sale, ask the seller to complete that process and confirm clean setup.

- The seller refuses a reasonable power-on, controls, or connectivity test.
- The PS5 reports a service restriction, the console cannot reach the relevant service, or a material mismatch in serial numbers or documentation has no credible explanation.
- The screen, controller, drive, battery, or port fails a test you need. Estimate the cost of a replacement or repair and missing parts before making an offer.
- The seller pressures you to pay immediately or wants to leave account credentials on the console.
- The price seems implausibly low. Nintendo flags unusually low pricing as a warning sign in its accessory guidance for counterfeit Joy-Con and Pro Controllers; that is a reason to investigate, not proof that a console or accessory is counterfeit.
If a replacement Nintendo controller is part of your cost calculation, Nintendo says counterfeit Joy-Con and Pro Controllers exist. Its licensed-products page explains that the official licensed seal indicates an accessory has been evaluated and licensed for system use; unlicensed accessories may not work or may have compatibility problems. These points concern accessories, not a guarantee about the console itself.

Compare offers on the same terms
There is no universal used-console price threshold or model reliability ranking established here. Nor is there a relevant published failure-rate, console-ban, stick-drift, or used-console-savings statistic to use as a shortcut. Compare the offers against the same practical criteria:
- Exact console model and capabilities
- Included hardware and accessories
- Observed condition of the console, display, battery, controller, ports, and drive
- Online-service access at inspection
- Seller reputation and available ownership evidence
- Warranty and return terms for that region and sale type
- Total cost after accounting for missing pieces and repairs
A private sale and a retailer-refurbished offer should be compared by their actual included items, testable condition, return window, and warranty—not by the labels alone.
