Before paying for a used foldable, inspect its inner screen and factory protector, hinge, and cover screen separately—then check its activation status, battery, repair history, and the seller’s written return and warranty terms. A cosmetic grade alone cannot tell you whether the folding mechanism or flexible display is in good condition.
Identify the exact phone and its history
Record the brand, exact model and generation, storage capacity, carrier status, and regional variant. These details matter because features and care guidance can differ between models. Ask whether the phone has been repaired, exposed to liquid, or had its hinge, inner display, or cover display serviced.
Ask the seller to show the IMEI or ESN and confirm that the phone can be activated and is not carrier-locked or activation-locked. Verify its status through the carrier or marketplace process appropriate to the device and where you are buying it. Used-phone checks and protections vary by marketplace; Swappa describes activation status as one of its device checks, but its process is not a universal standard. How should you inspect the inner display?
Open the phone and examine the flexible screen against a plain, light background. Check it at more than one brightness level, and look across the full surface—not just the crease—for dead pixels, lines, dark bands or patches, dents, unusual crease damage, and areas that do not respond to touch. Test touch response across the display while the phone is open.

Look closely at the factory-installed protector, particularly along the fold. Bubbles, lifting, or separation are reasons to ask about service and cost; do not peel the protector off as part of an inspection. Google cautions that Pixel Fold owners should not remove its pre-installed protector or apply a third-party one. Samsung likewise advises against user removal and directs owners to an authorized service center for replacement. Follow the guidance for the exact model rather than assuming one brand’s instructions apply to another. Google Pixel Fold safety and regulatory guide; Samsung foldable phone care guidance
Google’s guide notes that flexible screens are softer than traditional phone screens and warns against crumbs, fingernails, and sharp objects. Keep the inspection gentle: do not press hard, scrape the screen, or put anything into the crease.

What should you feel and see at the hinge?
Open and close the phone smoothly a few times, without forcing it. Notice whether resistance feels uneven, or whether you hear or feel grit, grinding, or looseness. Check that it opens and closes as designed and look for an unusual gap when shut. Do not put tools or debris into the hinge. Google warns that fine particles such as sand or dirt can damage a foldable display or hinge. Google Pixel Fold safety and regulatory guide
Foldables differ in how they are designed to open and close, so judge the device against the expected behavior for its exact model. If the seller cannot demonstrate normal operation, treat that as unresolved risk rather than assuming the hinge is fine.

Check the cover screen and everyday functions
Inspect the outside display independently for cracks, scratches, and touch dead spots. Test both screens: type or tap across different areas and confirm that each responds normally. If possible, check cameras, speakers, microphones, buttons, biometrics, wireless connections, and the charging port. Watch how the battery behaves during your inspection, but do not treat a short test as proof of long-term battery health.
Confirm again that the phone can be activated and is not locked to a carrier or account. A device that looks sound but cannot be activated may not be usable on your intended network. What does a water or dust rating tell you?
Do not treat a phone’s original water or dust rating as a guarantee that a used device remains protected. Age, damage, repair, or disassembly can affect resistance, and ratings are not the same across all models and generations. Google says the Pixel Fold is not dust resistant and that its water resistance may diminish or be lost through normal wear and tear, repair, disassembly, or damage. Those statements are specific to the Pixel Fold; check the manufacturer’s guidance for the exact phone you are considering. Google Pixel Fold safety and regulatory guide

Ask the seller to state in writing:
- The reported battery condition, whether the battery has been replaced, and whether that information is based on a diagnostic or the seller’s estimate.
- Any known screen, protector, hinge, or other repairs, and whether liquid exposure is known or reported.
- What the cosmetic grade covers and what it says about functional condition.
- Whether any manufacturer warranty remains, what warranty the seller provides, and the return window and conditions.
“Refurbished” does not by itself mean that the phone has a new battery, and cosmetic grading is not a universal technical standard. The Associated Press advises secondhand-phone buyers to ask about battery replacement and grading because practices vary. Associated Press secondhand-phone buying advice

Read the actual marketplace or seller terms before paying. Protections apply only under the relevant seller’s or marketplace’s policies; do not assume one marketplace’s screening rules apply to another listing.
How do you compare two used foldables?
Compare the exact models on factors that affect usability and risk, not just on cosmetic grade or asking price:
- Model, generation, region variant, and remaining software-support runway.
- Condition of the inner display, factory protector, hinge, closure, and cover screen.
- Documented battery condition and repair or liquid-exposure history.
- Written return terms, warranty coverage, and seller reputation or protections.
- Total likely cost, including any repair or service needed to address a defect.
A manufacturer-renewed phone may be worth a higher price when its included parts, checks, and warranty are clearly documented. Availability and terms are regional. For example, Samsung announced on April 28, 2026 that its UK Certified Re-Newed program includes Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7, certified new batteries, more than 100 quality tests, and a two-year manufacturer warranty. Those details describe that UK program and are not a general promise for used Samsung phones or offers in other countries. Samsung Newsroom UK’s Certified Re-Newed announcement
