Before buying a smart home hub, list the exact devices you want it to control and verify their model-level compatibility, required ecosystem, connection type, and any bridge they need. Then check the hub’s Matter and Thread roles, your router’s IPv6 support if you plan to use Matter, and whether the hub’s local-control options, placement, and form factor fit your home.

Start with the devices you own or plan to buy

Compatibility is specific to device models and features, not just brand names. A hub may support a manufacturer’s product family without supporting every model, device category, or function you want. Check the device maker’s current compatibility page and the hub’s support list before you buy. Google’s Matter preparation guidance and TP-Link’s Matter setup guide illustrate why the exact product and setup path matter.

  • Record each device’s exact model number and the functions you expect to use, such as lock status, thermostat schedules, or sensor alerts.
  • Check which platform or ecosystem supports it: Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home, SmartThings, or another system.
  • Identify its connection method—such as Wi-Fi, Thread, Zigbee, or a manufacturer-specific system—and whether a vendor bridge is required.
  • Confirm that the hub supports the device category and the particular functions you need, not merely the device’s brand or a Matter logo.

A bridge connects a device system to another platform or network. It may still be necessary for legacy or proprietary products even if you add a general-purpose hub.

Choose the platform that fits your household

The platform is the app, account, voice assistant, and automation system you will use to manage devices. Your choice affects which devices can be added, which household members can control them, and how automations are created. If your home already relies on one assistant or app, begin by checking that platform’s current supported-device list rather than assuming another hub will make everything interchangeable.

Platform support can vary by device category and feature. Google notes that certified platforms may adopt support for Matter device categories at different times. TP-Link advises setting up its Matter devices in Tapo or Kasa first for full feature access, then sharing them with another platform if desired. Check the desired features in both the device maker’s and platform’s documentation before relying on cross-platform support.

Understand what Matter, Wi-Fi, Thread, and a hub do

Matter is an interoperability standard, not a radio

Matter helps compatible smart-home devices work across supported platforms, but it does not mean every device works with every hub or exposes all its features everywhere. A Matter device communicates over Wi-Fi or Thread, and it must be commissioned by a compatible platform controller. Google’s Matter overview describes Matter support in terms of compatible controllers and capabilities.

Thread devices need a Thread Border Router

For a Matter-over-Thread device, check that your setup includes a Thread Border Router. This connects the Thread network to the home IP network. A hub that supports Matter over Wi-Fi does not necessarily have Thread hardware; confirm the exact model’s specifications. Some products combine controller and border-router roles. Google explains the distinction in its Matter setup requirements.

A hub may be built into another device

The controller or hub function does not always require a separate box. A compatible speaker, display, router, or other device may provide it, while a separate bridge may still be needed for particular product families. As one Alexa-specific example, Amazon lists Echo Hub as a Matter-capable Echo and as a built-in Thread Border Router supporting Thread 1.3. That is a documented example for Alexa households, not a universal recommendation; verify the exact model and your devices’ support before choosing it. See Amazon’s Matter documentation and its Thread Border Router device list.

Check your router and setup requirements before buying Matter devices

Google’s Matter preparation guidance identifies IPv6 on the home Wi-Fi network as a requirement. Google warns that setup may initially appear to succeed without IPv6, but control and other functions can later fail. Check your router manual or ask your internet provider whether IPv6 is available and enabled. Do not assume that a successful initial pairing proves the network is configured correctly.

For Google Home’s cited Matter setup instructions, the checklist includes a Google Account, Wi-Fi, IPv6 enabled on the home Wi-Fi router, a Matter-enabled Google Home hub, a Matter device, and a phone or tablet with Bluetooth LE 4.2 or later for pairing. For a Thread-based Matter device, Google additionally requires a Thread Border Router. The cited mobile requirements are Android 8.1 or later with a qualifying Google Play services version, or iOS/iPadOS 16.5 or later; check Google’s current instructions because app and operating-system requirements can change. Details are in Google Home and Nest Help’s Matter preparation page.

Decide how much local control you need

Ask which commands and automations should continue working when your internet connection is unavailable, and which features can depend on cloud services. Google says in-home Matter commands run locally over Wi-Fi or Thread, while commands issued remotely involve cloud communication. That does not establish that every device feature, notification, voice function, or automation will work offline. Check the hub and device makers’ documentation for the exact functions you rely on.

Compare capacity, coverage, placement, and form factor

Before settling on a hub, check the manufacturer’s stated device capacity and the coverage guidance for your home. A larger or multi-level home may need more than one hub, a mesh network, or a separate bridge; requirements vary by system, building layout, and where equipment can be placed. Confirm the power and network connections available at the intended location.

Decide whether you want a screen or speaker as part of the hub experience, or a compact device that can stay out of sight. A display or speaker can make control more convenient but may take up visible space. Also check whether the functions you want—such as Thread routing or control of a particular device family—require separate hardware.

Use this final buying checklist

  1. Inventory devices: Write down exact models, planned purchases, desired functions, and any required bridges.
  2. Confirm the ecosystem: Check that the platform you intend to use supports those device models and functions.
  3. Verify protocols: For each Matter device, determine whether it uses Wi-Fi or Thread; for Thread, confirm a Thread Border Router is included in your setup.
  4. Check the network: If using Google’s Matter setup path, verify IPv6 on your home Wi-Fi network before relying on Matter devices.
  5. Review setup and maintenance: Check current phone, app, Bluetooth, firmware, and account requirements in the maker’s instructions.
  6. Match the hub to the home: Compare documented device capacity, coverage, placement, power, local-control behavior, and form factor.

Compatibility lists and product capabilities can change with firmware, platform updates, and model revisions. Treat vendor lists as current guidance to verify for the specific products you plan to use, not as a permanent guarantee.
