Before buying a lifetime subscription to an AI platform, verify what “lifetime” means in the written offer, which AI features and usage it actually includes, what extra costs can arise, and what happens to your access and data if the service changes or closes. Save the checkout page and governing terms, then evaluate the deal against your realistic usage—not the headline price.
1. Define what “lifetime” means
“Lifetime” is not a standard promise that software will operate forever. It may refer to the buyer’s lifetime, the commercial life of a particular product, or only the period a specific hosted service remains active. It may also describe a hosted-use license, source-code access, or account access—rights that are not interchangeable.
For example, Scriptivox’s terms define lifetime as use of the purchased plan for as long as Scriptivox operates the service, explicitly not the buyer’s lifetime or a promise of permanent operation. The same terms say the buyer receives a license, not ownership of the software. These terms were last updated September 29, 2026; they describe Scriptivox’s offer, not a universal definition. - Does the entitlement survive a product rename, replacement, or acquisition?
- Can the vendor discontinue or materially change the service?
- Is the purchase for hosted access, a local license, self-hosted code, or something else?
2. Write down exactly what AI access is included
Record the product tier, features, and limits shown at checkout. A lifetime core subscription may not include lifetime AI processing, premium models, or unlimited use. CUE’s terms, for example, say permanent or unlimited AI usage is excluded unless the written offer expressly guarantees it; limited or promotional credits may be changed, reduced, suspended, or withdrawn. Check the offer for concrete allowances and exclusions:
- Named AI models and what happens if a provider or model changes.
- Monthly credits, tokens, messages, minutes, rate limits, and fair-use restrictions.
- Whether unused credits expire and whether the vendor can change the allocation.
- Premium models, image/video/voice generation, agents, integrations, exports, team tools, beta features, and future products.
- File size, context, storage, and request limits that affect your actual workload.
“Unlimited” is not a useful commitment unless the terms define fair use and workload restrictions. Scriptivox’s terms, for instance, permit changes to AI models and providers while protecting only particular listed usage allowances. Check the offer-specific Scriptivox terms.

3. Identify costs beyond the one-time price
A one-time purchase price does not necessarily cover every future expense. Check whether AI inference or API usage, hosting, storage, integrations, support, taxes, or extra seats are included for the promised period. Look for required top-ups, paid credits, external API keys, separately sold add-ons, and charges for future features.

If self-hosting is offered as a fallback, include cloud compute, storage, setup, maintenance, and your time in the cost. Compare the total with a monthly or annual plan at your expected usage, and use a conservative estimate of how long you will actually be able to use the entitlement. The available terms do not establish an industry-wide average for API fees or prove that all AI lifetime offers charge them.
4. Separate refunds, cancellation, and shutdown protections
Refund eligibility and closure protections are distinct. Read the live offer and governing terms for the purchase channel and jurisdiction that apply to you. Record the refund deadline, whether using the service affects eligibility, how to request a refund, what happens after a material feature change, and how much notice and export time you get if service ends.

Check whether the license is personal or business, how many seats it covers, and whether client work, agency use, sharing, resale, or transfer is permitted. Scriptivox’s example license is for single-person use, is non-transferable, and includes fair-use restrictions. Scriptivox terms.

Before storing important work, find out what happens to prompts, outputs, files, and workflows after cancellation or shutdown. Confirm the export format and time window; if possible, test exporting nonessential data early. Check accepted-use rules, support commitments, uptime promises, and whether access depends on a third-party account or login.
Self-hosted alternatives need scrutiny too: verify that code or artifacts are actually included, what license applies, which environments are supported, and who pays to install and operate them. Quartzite AI’s historical discontinuation terms described a self-hosted version but assigned installation, maintenance, hosting, and related costs to the user. Quartzite AI terms.
Some purchases depend on accounts and access outside the AI product itself. Perseon’s purchase terms, for example, require a Better Auth account and GitHub sign-in or invitation for private repository access. They also say buyers switching from an annual plan must cancel that renewal separately if they no longer want annual billing. Perseon purchase terms.
6. Compare offers on the same terms
Use the same questions for each offer rather than comparing only one-time prices:

Save a dated copy of the checkout offer and terms before paying. If an essential protection—such as a credit allowance, export period, or business-use right—is missing or ambiguous, ask the seller for written clarification. Vendor terms can change, and applicable legal rights depend on your jurisdiction; the examples above do not determine those rights.
