Before buying a discontinued or older TV, verify the exact model and regional variant, check its manufacturer support page, confirm it has the connections and features your devices need, and test the specific unit. A TV may still work well as a display even when its built-in apps or software support are limited, but age or brand alone cannot tell you what it can do.
How can I identify the exact TV model?
Ask the seller for a clear photo of the model label and, if possible, compare it with the TV’s on-screen system information. The model number may be on the box, a label on the rear or underside, or in a settings menu such as “About,” “Device,” or “System details.” For Roku-branded TVs, Roku also identifies the rear label, box, or Settings > System > About as places to find model information (ACMA identification guidance; Roku product information).
Use the complete model code, including any suffixes that distinguish region or version, when looking up specifications, manuals, firmware, and support notices. Similar-looking TVs in the same series can differ. LG, for example, directs owners to search for manuals and software using the model number (LG product support).
How do I find out if the model still gets updates?
Search the manufacturer’s official support page for the exact model. Look for the latest firmware, any available release notes, the update instructions, and notices about downloads ending. Sony says downloads for some older models will end progressively and recommends installing the latest update before a stated cutoff. Its notice also says future security updates may be released depending on necessity; that is not a promise of ongoing updates (Sony notice on older-model software downloads).

Update methods vary by model. Sony notes that some older TVs may not offer a manual update search or may require service assistance; LG documents network and USB update methods and says the available method depends on the product (Sony TV software update guidance; LG TV software update guidance). If the support page has no update listing, do not assume the TV is unusable—but do not treat that absence as evidence of future support either.
Will an older TV work with my console, soundbar, or other devices?
List the devices you intend to connect before comparing TVs: for example, a console, receiver or soundbar, antenna or cable equipment, computer, or external player. Check the exact model’s manual or product page for the number and capabilities of its inputs, resolution, supported HDR formats, refresh rate, and audio return connection where relevant. These specifications can vary between models and series; a port labeled HDMI alone does not establish that it supports a particular feature (Roku product comparison information).

Match the documented capabilities to your use. If a console needs a particular resolution or refresh rate, confirm that the TV supports it; if a soundbar needs an audio return connection, confirm the model’s manual specifies one. HDMI Licensing Administrator explains that an end-user product such as a digital TV must itself be a licensed product, even if it contains licensed components. That licensing information does not verify the condition of a used TV or identify the features of a specific model, so rely on the TV’s documentation for compatibility (HDMI Licensing Administrator guidance).
What should I test on the particular TV?
A model’s specifications do not establish the condition of the individual set for sale. If it is used, ask for a powered-on demonstration and check the screen, connections, and accessories you will rely on.

- Look for lines, dark areas, stuck pixels, uneven brightness, image retention, and visible panel damage.
- Test each input you need, the remote, speakers, and Wi-Fi if you plan to use it.
- Inspect the stand or mounting points and check which accessories are included.
- Ask whether the set is new old stock, open-box, refurbished, or used, and request any available repair history.
These are practical checks of the individual set, not guarantees based on its label or model name.
What seller terms and safety checks matter?
Get the condition description, warranty coverage, return window, and included accessories in writing before paying. A label such as “refurbished” or “open-box” does not, by itself, establish the unit’s condition. Terms depend on the seller and location, so check the actual listing rather than assuming a universal warranty or return period.

Search the manufacturer and the relevant government product-safety or recall database using the exact model and, where requested, the serial number. Identification guidance can help you locate those numbers, but it cannot establish whether a particular set has a recall notice (ACMA identification guidance; LG product support).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is a discontinued TV still worth buying?
It can be, if the specific set is in acceptable condition, its documented features meet your needs, and the listing’s price and protections make sense for you. Treat the screen and inputs separately from the built-in smart features: limited apps or updates may not prevent a TV from serving as a display, but confirm that any apps you need still work. App-service lifetimes for particular models are not established here. An external streaming device may be an option if the TV’s display and connections suit your setup.
