If you need one controller for a Windows PC, an iPhone or Android phone, and an Xbox console, first check whether it connects wirelessly to the Xbox itself. The Xbox Wireless Controller is the straightforward first-party option: it uses Xbox Wireless on Xbox consoles and Bluetooth on supported PCs and phones. The 8BitDo Ultimate 3E is another documented option, using an included 2.4 GHz adapter for Xbox and PC and Bluetooth for mobile. Do not assume every controller described as Xbox-compatible is wireless on Xbox: the similarly named 8BitDo Ultimate 3-mode connects to Xbox by USB cable.

The main decision is not simply whether a controller has Bluetooth. It is whether the exact model supports the connection method you need on each device, whether your phone and games support it, and whether you are happy with its battery and included accessories. If a cable at the console is acceptable, the Ultimate 3-mode may be worth considering; if Xbox play must be wireless, exclude it.

What should you check first?

Start with the console connection, then verify PC and phone support separately. “Works with Xbox” may mean that a controller is compatible with an Xbox console when plugged in—not that it connects to the console wirelessly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Decide whether Xbox play must be wireless. If yes, look for a specification that explicitly says Xbox Wireless or identifies an included wireless adapter for Xbox. If a cable is acceptable on the console, you have more options.
  2. Check how it connects to your PC. A controller might use Bluetooth, a USB cable, or a dedicated 2.4 GHz adapter. Make sure your PC supports the method you plan to use, and confirm whether an adapter is included.
  3. Check the exact phone and operating system. Mobile support varies by model and OS version. A Bluetooth connection alone does not guarantee that a particular game accepts a controller.
  4. Compare power and what is in the box. Controllers may use replaceable AA batteries or a built-in rechargeable battery. A dock, cable, or wireless adapter should not be assumed to be included unless the exact product listing says so.

These checks matter because connection modes are model-specific. In particular, do not transfer features from one product with a similar name to another. A useful way to read any listing is to make three separate columns—Xbox, PC, phone—and write down the stated connection method in each. If one column is unclear, do not treat support for another device as an answer.

Which controllers support wireless play on Xbox, PC, and phone?

These models have documented paths across the three device types, but they differ in how they connect and in their mobile requirements.

Exact model Xbox console Windows PC Phone Key qualification
Xbox Wireless Controller Xbox Wireless Bluetooth; a compatible cable or Xbox Wireless adapter is also an option Bluetooth on supported iOS and Android devices Uses AA batteries. Check the controller revision and its port if you need USB-C or a particular charging accessory.
8BitDo Ultimate 3E Controller for Xbox Wireless through its included 2.4 GHz adapter 2.4 GHz adapter or USB Bluetooth on supported Android and Apple devices 8BitDo lists Android 13+; its retrieved Ultimate 3E specifications do not state an iOS version. Rechargeable battery and dock are included.
Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 – Core Xbox Wireless Bluetooth or included USB-C cable; an adapter is another option Bluetooth on supported Android and iOS devices Has a built-in rechargeable battery. The Core package includes fewer accessories than the full Elite Series 2 package.
8BitDo Ultimate 3-mode Controller for Xbox Wired USB only 2.4 GHz adapter or USB Bluetooth on supported Apple and Android devices 8BitDo lists iOS/iPadOS 18.2+. It is not an all-wireless choice if you need wireless Xbox play.

The table summarizes manufacturer specifications, not independent tests of latency, comfort, durability, or battery life. Mobile functionality can be limited by device and operating-system support, and the game itself must support controllers.

For a wireless console connection, the three candidates are the Xbox Wireless Controller, Ultimate 3E, and Elite Series 2 – Core. Their console links are not interchangeable descriptions: Microsoft specifies Xbox Wireless for its controllers, while the Ultimate 3E uses its included 2.4 GHz adapter. The Ultimate 3-mode is a qualified alternative only when a wired Xbox connection is acceptable. Across the whole setup, the standard Xbox controller and Elite have Bluetooth options for PC and mobile; the 8BitDo models specify an adapter or USB for PC and Bluetooth for mobile.

How do you choose if Xbox play must be wireless?

For wireless Xbox play, compare the standard Xbox Wireless Controller, the Ultimate 3E, and the Elite Series 2 – Core. All three have a documented wireless console connection, but they use different PC and mobile connection options and have different power arrangements.

Choose the Xbox Wireless Controller for a simple first-party option

Microsoft specifies Xbox Wireless for console use and Bluetooth for supported Windows, iOS, and Android devices. On Windows, a compatible cable or Xbox Wireless adapter is also an option. That makes it a practical starting point if you want an Xbox controller that can move between console and Bluetooth-capable devices without relying on a third-party console adapter.

The standard controller uses AA batteries. Microsoft’s optional rechargeable battery is for Xbox Wireless Controllers with a USB-C port, so check the exact controller revision before buying a charging accessory. Microsoft also lists battery life of up to 40 hours with AA batteries; that is a manufacturer estimate, not a standardized comparison with the other models. Microsoft says its estimate used preproduction units and that actual battery life varies.

That distinction is useful when comparing the controller with models that have built-in batteries. With AA power, you can use replacement cells, or consider Microsoft’s optional rechargeable battery if the controller revision has USB-C and the accessory is compatible. Do not assume that every Xbox Wireless Controller revision has the same port or that plugging in any cable makes AA batteries rechargeable. Confirm both the controller and battery accessory specifications before you buy.

Choose the Ultimate 3E if you want an included wireless adapter and dock

The 8BitDo Ultimate 3E Controller for Xbox connects wirelessly to Xbox and Windows through its included 2.4 GHz adapter, and uses Bluetooth for mobile devices. Its package includes the adapter and a dock, and the controller has an internal rechargeable battery. 8BitDo lists Android 13+ and advertises 18 hours of play and a 1,400 mAh battery.

The listed Apple compatibility does not specify an iOS version in the retrieved product specifications. If you plan to use an iPhone or iPad, check 8BitDo’s current documentation for the exact model and your OS before purchasing. The 18-hour figure is the manufacturer’s specification; it should not be treated as a directly comparable result from the same test conditions as another controller’s battery estimate.

The adapter matters if your PC does not have Bluetooth or you prefer to use the included 2.4 GHz connection. The manufacturer lists adapter or USB for PC, so decide which route you intend to use and make sure the required port is available. The included dock is part of this model’s stated package; that is a concrete box-content distinction, not a reason to assume other controllers include a dock.

Choose the Elite Series 2 – Core for its premium control features

The Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 – Core supports Xbox Wireless on console, Bluetooth or USB-C on Windows, and Bluetooth on supported Android and iOS devices. It has a built-in rechargeable battery, with Microsoft listing up to 40 hours per charge and noting that use affects battery life.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pay attention to the word Core. Microsoft distinguishes the Core package from the full Elite Series 2 package by its included accessories: Core has a smaller accessory set. If interchangeable or additional accessories are important to your setup, confirm exactly what the listing includes rather than assuming the Core box contains everything associated with the full Elite package.

This makes the decision partly about the controller and partly about the package. If the Core’s included contents meet your needs, its specification still covers the three device categories described here. If you want the broader accessory set associated with the full Elite package, compare the exact box contents before choosing between them. Do not infer a particular accessory from the Elite name alone.

Is the 8BitDo Ultimate 3-mode wireless on Xbox?

No. The 8BitDo Ultimate 3-mode Controller for Xbox connects to Xbox by wired USB, even though it supports wireless connections to Windows and mobile devices. It can still suit someone who accepts a cable at the console and values its other connection modes, but it does not meet a requirement for wireless Xbox play.

On Windows, 8BitDo specifies 2.4 GHz wireless or USB. On supported Apple or Android devices, it specifies Bluetooth, with iOS/iPadOS 18.2+ listed. The vendor’s description explicitly separates these modes: wired USB for Xbox, 2.4 GHz for Windows, and Bluetooth for Apple or Android. Treat “3-mode” as a description of its multiple connection options, not proof that every device connects wirelessly.

Do not confuse it with the similarly named Ultimate 3E Controller for Xbox. The 3E’s listed Xbox connection is wireless through its included 2.4 GHz adapter; the 3-mode’s Xbox connection is wired USB. If you are shopping from a search result or retailer listing, verify the complete model name and the console-mode line before ordering. A broad Xbox-compatible label does not settle whether the console connection is wireless.

What does “works with a phone” actually mean?

It means more than being able to pair over Bluetooth. Microsoft cautions that Bluetooth and mobile functionality is limited to select devices and operating-system versions, and that games must be controller-compatible. A controller may pair successfully yet not work in an app or game that does not accept controller input.

Before buying, check the exact controller’s current support information against the phone’s OS. For the models covered here, 8BitDo specifically lists Android 13+ for the Ultimate 3E and iOS/iPadOS 18.2+ for the Ultimate 3-mode. The retrieved Ultimate 3E specifications do not give a specific iOS version, so do not infer one from the listing’s general Apple compatibility. For the Xbox Wireless Controller and Elite Series 2 – Core, Microsoft describes mobile support for select devices; do not read that as a guarantee for every phone or game.

A practical check is to start with the controller manufacturer’s supported OS list, then check the game or app you care about. “Bluetooth” describes a connection option; it does not certify that every operating system, phone model, or mobile game will behave identically. If mobile play is the deciding use, confirm the phone’s OS version and the game’s controller support before treating a controller as a fit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you plan to play with the phone mounted to the controller, check the fit of the phone and case as well as controller compatibility. Xbox announced a MOGA mobile gaming clip for Xbox Wireless Controllers in 2019 and specified phones up to 79 mm wide at that time. That historical specification does not establish current stock or fit for a particular phone-and-case combination.

How do power and included accessories affect the choice?

Power can change the ongoing convenience of a setup, while included accessories determine whether you need to source a cable or adapter separately.

  • AA batteries: The standard Xbox Wireless Controller uses AA batteries. Microsoft’s optional rechargeable battery applies to USB-C-equipped Xbox Wireless Controllers, not automatically to every older revision.
  • Built-in rechargeable battery: The Elite Series 2 – Core and Ultimate 3E have internal rechargeable batteries. You do not choose AA cells for these models.
  • Adapter and dock: The Ultimate 3E includes its 2.4 GHz adapter and dock. Do not assume that another controller includes a separate Xbox Wireless adapter, mobile clip, dock, or premium accessories.
  • Core versus full package: The Elite Core package contains fewer accessories than the full Elite Series 2. Compare package contents, not just the shared Elite name.

Battery-life numbers from different manufacturers are not a controlled head-to-head comparison. Microsoft lists up to 40 hours for the standard Xbox Wireless Controller with AA batteries and up to 40 hours per charge for Elite Series 2 – Core. 8BitDo lists 18 play hours for Ultimate 3E. Use those figures as each manufacturer’s stated estimates, not as proof that one will last a specific amount longer in your own mix of games, connection modes, and settings.

There is no single charging or accessory assumption that applies to all of these models. The standard controller’s AA power is different from the two internal-rechargeable options. The optional Xbox Rechargeable Battery + USB-C is relevant to USB-C-equipped standard Xbox Wireless Controllers; it is not an automatic fit for every revision and is not needed to replace the Elite’s built-in battery. Check the relevant model and accessory details rather than buying a battery pack based on a product-family name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prices and stock can change by retailer and listing, so compare the current exact models and package contents rather than assuming a price relationship from their feature sets. The specifications here do not establish a price ranking or a standardized value comparison. If you need a mobile clip, treat the MOGA clip as a fit question as well as an availability question: the 2019 Xbox announcement gave a maximum phone width of 79 mm, but that does not verify current stock or compatibility with your phone case.

What should you verify on the product listing before buying?

Match the listing to your actual setup rather than relying on a broad compatibility badge or a familiar product-family name.

  1. Read the complete model name. Ultimate 3E and Ultimate 3-mode are different controllers with different Xbox connection methods.
  2. Find the Xbox connection wording. Look specifically for Xbox Wireless or an included Xbox wireless adapter if the console must be cable-free. “Compatible with Xbox” by itself does not answer that question.
  3. Confirm the PC method. Check whether the controller uses Bluetooth, USB, or a 2.4 GHz adapter, and whether the required adapter is included.
  4. Match mobile support to your OS. Check the manufacturer’s current OS requirements for the exact model and confirm that the games you want to play accept controllers.
  5. Check power and package contents. Verify whether it uses AA batteries or has a built-in rechargeable battery, and whether the box includes the cable, adapter, dock, or accessories you need.
  6. Recheck volatile details. OS support, firmware behavior, package contents, stock, and retailer listings can change. Confirm those details on the current manufacturer page and the exact listing before ordering.

For the standard Xbox Wireless Controller, verify the revision if USB-C or a rechargeable accessory matters to you. For the Ultimate 3E, verify the Android requirement and seek current Apple OS guidance if you plan to use an iPhone or iPad. For Ultimate 3-mode, make sure you are comfortable with wired USB on Xbox and meet its listed iOS/iPadOS 18.2+ requirement if relevant. For Elite Series 2 – Core, distinguish the Core package contents from the full Elite Series 2 before comparing listings.

These are manufacturer-specification comparisons, not hands-on rankings. No independent comparative test establishes which controller has lower latency, feels more comfortable, or lasts longer in identical conditions. Choose based on the mode you need on each device, phone and game compatibility, battery preference, and what the exact box contains.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use one Xbox controller with two devices at the same time?

The specifications covered here describe which connection methods each controller supports, not simultaneous multi-device operation. Check the exact model’s current manual for switching or simultaneous-connection behavior rather than assuming that support for Bluetooth and Xbox Wireless means both can be active together.

Will a Bluetooth Xbox controller work with every PC game?

No. A Bluetooth connection establishes a link to the PC, but individual games and launchers can differ in controller support. Check the game’s controller requirements if support for a particular title is essential.

Do I need an Xbox Wireless Adapter for a Windows PC?

Not necessarily: the standard Xbox Wireless Controller and Elite Series 2 – Core support Bluetooth on compatible Windows PCs, and both can also connect by cable. The Ultimate 3E specifies its included 2.4 GHz adapter or USB for PC; choose based on your PC’s available connection options.

Can I recharge an Xbox Wireless Controller with any USB-C cable?

A USB-C port does not by itself establish that a controller has a built-in rechargeable battery. The standard Xbox Wireless Controller uses AA batteries; Microsoft’s optional rechargeable battery is for USB-C-equipped revisions. Check the exact controller and accessory specifications before relying on cable charging.

Is the 8BitDo Ultimate 3-mode Controller for Xbox wireless on the console?

No. 8BitDo specifies wired USB for Xbox, 2.4 GHz or USB for Windows, and Bluetooth for supported Apple or Android devices. If wireless Xbox play is essential, compare it with the Ultimate 3E, whose listed Xbox connection uses its included 2.4 GHz adapter.

Will an Xbox controller work with every iPhone or Android game?

No. Microsoft says Bluetooth/mobile functionality is limited to select devices and OS versions, and the game must support controller input. Check your phone’s OS and the game’s requirements; the Ultimate 3E’s listed Android requirement is Android 13+, while the Ultimate 3-mode lists iOS/iPadOS 18.2+.

Does the Xbox Wireless Controller include a rechargeable battery?

The standard Xbox Wireless Controller uses AA batteries. Microsoft’s optional Xbox Rechargeable Battery + USB-C applies to USB-C-equipped controller revisions, so verify your exact model and accessory compatibility rather than assuming the battery is built in.

Are the battery-life figures directly comparable?

No. Microsoft lists up to 40 hours for the standard controller using AA batteries and up to 40 hours per charge for Elite Series 2 – Core; 8BitDo lists 18 play hours for Ultimate 3E. These are manufacturer specifications, not results from a single standardized comparative test, and actual use affects battery life.

Does Elite Series 2 – Core include all the accessories in the full Elite package?

No. Microsoft distinguishes Core by its smaller included-accessory set. Check the exact package listing if you need particular accessories rather than assuming that all Elite Series 2 contents come with the Core.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: If one controller must play wirelessly on Xbox, PC, and phone, begin with the Xbox Wireless Controller, 8BitDo Ultimate 3E, or Xbox Elite Series 2 – Core, then match the PC connection, phone OS, game support, battery type, and box contents to your needs. The Ultimate 3-mode is a different choice: it is wireless on Windows and mobile but wired on Xbox. Check the exact model and current manufacturer specifications before ordering.
