You can start your first group run with comfortable athletic shoes, clothes you can move in, your keys, and a phone. Water, identification, and visibility gear depend on the route and your needs; a watch, gels, or specialist kit are not prerequisites. Check the host club’s details, arrive early enough to hear the briefing, and choose a pace you can sustain.
What to wear
Comfortable shoes and clothes
Wear athletic shoes that already feel comfortable; you do not need to buy new running shoes just to attend. The Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) says running requires little physical equipment and advises new runners to start with comfortable athletic shoes. Wear clothes that let you move freely. Moisture-wicking fabric and socks can be useful, but RRCA says to work with what you have.
Dress for the weather and light
Choose layers or other weather-appropriate clothing as needed. If the route is dark or poorly lit, wear reflective clothing or a lighted vest. RRCA advises against running in the middle of the road after dark; follow the organizer’s route guidance and local rules.
What to carry
- Phone and keys: Keep your keys secure. RRCA describes a phone as an important safety tool for getting help.
- Water: Ask the organizer whether water is provided and whether the route has fountains or other access. Carry your own if the route, conditions, or your personal needs warrant it; there is no universal rule that every group-run participant must bring water.
- Identification: RRCA recommends carrying ID and suggests that medical information may also be worth considering. This is a safety option, not a requirement to buy a particular product.
- Waiver or registration details: Follow the host’s instructions. Sign-in and waiver requirements vary by club; for example, ATX Runners asks visitors to bring a signed waiver.
What you can leave at home
Unless the club or conditions call for them, you do not need a watch, hydration vest, gels, backpack, or new apparel for a short introductory run. Ask about the distance, route, and water rather than packing for a race. RRCA’s guidance emphasizes that running takes little equipment.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check the details before you go
- Open the club’s latest official post or page. Confirm the meeting place and start time, along with the route, distance, registration or waiver instructions, and any weather-related changes. These details can change.
- Ask about beginner options. Find out whether beginners and run-walkers are welcome, what pace groups are available, and whether the group regroups or has a no-drop policy. Arrangements differ: ATX Runners, for example, describes matching newcomers with runners at a similar pace on some group runs, but that is not a promise about every club.
- Ask about the route. Confirm water access and whether the route is lit, then decide what to carry and wear accordingly.
- Arrive on time or a few minutes early. Sign in if asked, identify your pace group, and listen to the route and safety briefing before setting off. RRCA’s group-run etiquette calls for arriving on time and determining your pace group.
How to take part comfortably and safely
Choose a sustainable pace
Start slowly and avoid going too hard, too far, or too fast too soon. RRCA advises runners to choose a pace they can sustain. If you need a walk break, let nearby runners know and move considerately so people behind you have room.
Follow the route and group rules
Stay on the designated route, obey traffic controls, and use the buddy system. RRCA advises leaving headphones at home for group runs and not running more than two abreast, especially on busy roads, sidewalks, and trails. Its guidance prioritizes sidewalks where available; when road running is necessary, it advises facing traffic. Follow local rules and the organizer’s directions.

If you are worried about being slow, getting lost, or arriving alone
Ask the organizer about pace options, route instructions, and how the group handles walk breaks or regrouping before you go. Beginner access and pace support vary by club, so do not assume every group has the same setup. If you are attending alone, check the official meeting details and identify the organizer or group when you arrive; you do not need to bring special gear to make a first visit.
